Let me know what you think with the 2x converter? My 2x is patiently waiting for my copy to show up
Be interested to hear how people like the 2X teleconverter on it. I have the 1.4x that I will try on mine soon. A while back I started a thread on using the new 70-200 vII with teleconverters to replace what I consider and excellent 100-400. I would only do this to save some money and lighten my bag.

Personally I have not had good luck historically with 2x on prior 70-200GM and 100-400GM. The 1.4x was good. I bought this 2X here on the B&S just to match up with this new lens. I'm hoping since the new lens is sharper the drop off in quality will still be acceptable. We will see though.

Ordered from B&H during the first minute of the pre-order and received mine yesterday via FedEx (North Carolina). The weight and girth of the lens is immediately impressive. Feels smaller and lighter in my hand than I expected. AF is snappy in good light, as the reviewers have reported. The feel and throw of the zoom ring is excellent and I love having an aperture ring with a lock. Internal zoom is a bonus. I kinda hate lenses that extend when zoomed. That's just me.
OK, now I need to sell my Tamron 70-180mm, Sigma 85mm and maybe a few more.

I saw this on YT, it's in Cantonese. Basically he said the 100-400 GM at 400mm is only slightly better than the the 70-200 +2 X TC, on large monitor. But I could tell the 100-400 at 400 is more contrasty. The comparison starts at 12:40.

So what's the consensus on what lensrental claimed about the lens shooting against bright lights? Seemed to be the only weakness they identified, but is it really worse than other lenses in this regard.
I will be getting this lens, but not until 2nd half of next year, budget has to recover from house build and my Z9 purchase first.
If the 70-200 II + 2x is nearly as good as the 100-400 @ 400 then I'll be gobsmacked and this must be a ridiculously good zoom. I know with prior 70-200s like my EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, it was superb with 1.4x and good with 2x, but I never used the 2x as the AF fell off a cliff on DSLR. I would be very surprised if the new one could match the AF of the 100-400, when the 2x was attached. But the fact the new 70-200 does 0.3x means I can get 0.42x with 1.4x TC and for me that will be plenty good enough.
I hadn't thought about it before but since I own the 200-600, I could sell the 100-400 and replace it with the 70-200. My ultimate travel kit would then be 12-24 f/4, 24-100 f/4, 70-200 f/2.8 II and 200-600, 1.4x TC and maybe just one prime, the 35 f/1.4.

I have a very sharp copy of the first version. I use it to shoot a lot of volleyball, but the ability to use it with the 2.0tc for wildlife is very intriguing. I have two 12 year old daughters that play a ton of volleyball so I'm trying to rationalize this decision based on my use over the next 10 years. Do you think my wife will go along?

I’ve never had the v1 Sony but had several Nikon and Canon 70-200 in the past. I took my vertical grip off my a1 today to see how the lens felt with the bare body. It is incredibly well balanced and light. The zoom action is superb and the focus super fast. I can’t wait to shoot it more but so far I’m really impressed.

For what it's worth I'll let the viewer of this decide how these 2 lenses compare with the 2X on the 70-200GM2. These are taken with an A1, on tripod, same 5.6 aperture and 400mm focal length, auto ISO, -1EV, 1/500SS. These are raw files SOOC, no sharpening or other manipulation to the images on LR import. Focus point is dead center with AF on.
ETA: Here's the same image zoomed in on various parts of it. Note that both lenses are set to wide open aperture - under normal conditions I would stop these down for better sharpness. Subject is roughly 50 yards away from the lens.

Is there any difference about focus performance? Does the the TC reduce af speeed of GM70-200 mk2?

Focus feels faster with the 100-400 but only marginally and that's just seat of the pants feel. I didn't notice any difference on the 70-200GM2 with and without the 2X TC attached regarding focus speed. It's fast either way.

I just rented a 70-200 for early January from Lensrentals. They will send Version II if available. We will shoot about 15000 images so really hoping I get it
