I also use PL6 and DeepPRIME XD when necessary. I used it for the Patagonia picture above, as I had to raise my shadows quite a bit on the mountains because it was an extremely backlit, high contrast scene. Lr was extremely grainy and was a no-go for the 30x60 print we want for our main room, but PL6 with DP worked great.

And because it's an image thread. Here's a shot from the Dolomites with the 35-150. Took the liberty to heal away some pedestrians.

Here is a set from Lyari in Karachi, Pakistan and, following that, two from Boston. Big difference in temperature!

Finally got a chance to process some of our landscape frames from our trip to Yellowstone late May last year. I am not a landscape photographer and was there mostly for the wildlife. But one cannot visit a magical place like Yellowstone and ignore all the magnificent landscape there!

So here are a few frames, some taken by me and some taken by my wife, using Tamron 35-150. Yes, the lens is a bit bulky for a walk-around lens but it does perform beautifully, and I don't mind the bulk too much given that I typically have to carry my 600mm prime for my birds/wildlife photography...

Hope you like them...

p.24 #7 · Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD Image Thread

I am thinking about letting go of my 35GM, as I barely use it anymore and even when I use it, I don't really see enough difference in the IQ of 35 GM and Tamron 35-150 to justify keeping both lenses. After using 35-150 for 8+ months, I am comfortable with its size and weight and don't usually reach out for the GM as a smaller option. The flexibility of zoom and convenience of not changing lenses make up for all the tiny minor points against 35-150 IMO.

However, I feel strange about not having a fast, wide to normal range, prime in my bag. Am I going to regret selling the 35 GM? Has anyone else retired a prime lens after owning this amazing lens? Perhaps 50/1.2 GM is a better companion lens to 35-150; in theory it should be different enough to justify keeping both in my kit.

Before I bought 35-150, I was also debating whether I should get 35GM instead. I do generally like 35mm prime but the zoom flexibility is very handy sometimes, and when I heard/read that 35-150 does deliver almost prime-like IQ across the focal length, I was sold. And I have been happy with my decision. I did, however, still buy a used 35/1.8 FE which obviously was much cheaper than 35GM, and still served those occasions for me where I might have a preference for a prime 35mm.

You might be saying this, but I don't think image quality is the differentiator so long as you are talking about measures like sharpness, contrast, CA, etc. I do see a difference in rendering and separation between the 35GM at 1.4 and the 35-150 at 2.0. If you are shooting the 35GM wide open mostly then it's not a true replacement. If you are stopping down then I think it is.

I have similar thoughts abut my 35 GM. I have not used this lens for about one year. It is true that the 35 GM opens to f/1.4 compared to f/2 of the Tamron. But this is just one stop, and then the question what is it exactly that one may want to shoot at 35 mm when f/1.4 is needed or can be desirable? I am also going in circles thinking about adding the 50 mm f/1.2. I don't have the actual experience of using a 50 mm prime at f/1.2, but intuitively this seems as something that can be potentially considerably more useful and interesting than using a 35 mm lens at f1.4. I have the feeling that the 50 mm f1.2 might motivate me enough to put it on instead of the Tamron, to try something new. This is not a top priority at the moment thought, as adding A7RV is another consideration. It is likely that pairing Tamron 35-150 with A7RV would make more sense than keeping the lens on A1.

I just did exactly that... sold the 35GM for lack of use.

In fairness, I also sold my 35-150 a while ago. It was just too big as a daily carry for me. I also missed 24 at the wide end.

I replaced the 35-150 with the 24-70GM II. I wasn't using the 35 at all... but recently added the 50GM back in to the stable. I think the 50 @1.2 is more special than the 35 @1.4.

Yeah, that's a good question, I'm thinking about it myself from time to time.
The thing is 35mm is my do-it-all focal length and 35GM is the best allrounder combined with compact-ish size & weight. It's a perfect fit for a modern Sony FF body to me, so I don't see much benefit going smaller/lighter.
On the other hand, the biggest downside of the Tamron is that it makes going back to other lenses in that range difficult ... so my 35GM is also not used that much since I got the Tamron. However, I like to keep it for those occasions where handling the Tamron might prove difficult and that extra stop will help indoors (though separation-wise my impression is that Tamron is not that far off due to shallower DoF).
50/1.2 beats 35GM when it comes to the "wow" effect due to its nicer and larger blur (I think 35GM is the only lens that I feel is too sharp wide-open for its focal length, which impacts its oof rendering a bit), but you can feel it's bigger and heavier. Also, as much as I managed to get myself to like the 50mm perspective, it's not 35mm...

Hmm, I don't think I helped much but these are my thoughts .

I just don't see the difference in rendering and separation. If anything, 35-150 makes it easier to create separation due to its versatile zoom range. Honestly, except weight and size I really don't have anything to complain about this lens.

By the way, your images from Karachi, Pakistan are stunning.

No question that 35GM is the best allrounder 35mm for the system, but I just don't use it much anymore and Tamron is staying on my camera all the time despite its hefty size and weight. I moved to 35 GM from Sigma 35mm f/1.2 (Bigma) and always loved rendering of Bigma more. I also have a CV 50/1.2 that I purchased to slow down and "see" better, but instead of slowing down I find using a manual focus lens frustrating. Maybe I can sell both 35 GM and CV 50/1.2 and get 50/1.2 GM. The goal is not to save money but to own the lenses that I would end up using more. No matter how amazing 35GM is, it is not doing me any good sitting in my dry cabinet all the time.

On the topic of weight and size, it is my third year as a Sony user and coming from Nikon DSLRs I initially preferred compact lenses more than bigger lenses, but now my preference pendulum is swinging back towards IQ/Rendering and "wow" effect. Bigma and Tamron 35-150 are two examples for me where I kept using bigger heavier lenses significantly more than my other compact primes. I don't think I would mind the weight and size of 50/1.2 GM, if it provides unique images that I won't be able to reproduce with other lenses in my kit. If I decide to sell 35GM and my CV 50, I will most likely pick up a 50 GM.

Thank you so much! I have more coming and on my last two Karachi trips I have exclusively used this lens. I agree that you can create strong separation if you zoom in. I find myself shooting the lens for these kinds of portraits most often between 100 and 150mm wide open and there I don't miss any of my primes. At 35mm I do see a difference both due to the extra stop on the GM and because the rendering is different. I shoot quite a bit of food photography and for that I use the 35 GM for most shots when I want the item to stand out against the restaurant interior and make the background non-distracting. My use case there may be more narrow than for most, however.
