I am really excited about this a7C line and the lenses they hinted they want to make for it. If we end up having a separate set of small zooms and primes for C series, it will be all i can ask for. I have no doubt a7C is a commercial success for them. I also like that it came at a juncture when their AF etc has matured a lot and they are on their 4th gen bodies.
It's going to be amazing one day, as it is now, a lot to be desired. A1c...... make it happen sony

As a 40 CF owner who wanted to get a smaller lens that had better AF in low-light... might sell the CF for the 40 G.
Guess it's between this and the 35 GM for me atm. To be fair, the 40 G is going to need to be very impressive at that f-stop. If it were a 35mm f1.8 G, that'd be a definite first choice. The only reason I'm considering this against the GM is that I know sometimes I won't want to take my camera out with the GM if I have to participate in kiddo management .
I could maybe print some high ISO photos at a lower size or buy Topaz for their denoise tech... if the AF is good, especially in low lighting. Still probably going to get the 35 GM, but I've been using the 40 CF for a long time locked onto f2.5 anyway. Having a lens with a comparable image, but improved AF performance and in a vastly superior form factor could be an even better solution for me... if this lens impresses.

I'd be quite happy with a compact 40/2.5 AF lens that was very very good wide open and excellent across the frame at f/4 or f/5.6 with nice sun stars and no ghosting issues.
Do we think it will really be f/2.5? Seems like it could be a typo as f/2.5 is very close to looking like f/2.8.

If these are really compact there will be no room for an aperture ring, focus ring, and button. Unless one or all are miniaturised. Which will give?
I would think no aperture ring like on the Sony 35/2.8.
I'm fine with that.

So you think button but no ring? The 2.8/35 had neither, but no G lens has had neither.
That'd be my guess. I'd personally prefer ring but no button. I like rings, and having lenses without them means I have to switch between two ways of working. But that's just me.

Can’t wait to see them. Really looking forward to the treatment. As others have suggested: aperture rings, no rings, custom buttons, none... good times.

Sony will have to make some choices like Sigma has done with the I-series, where the lenses have got an aperture ring at the expense of a focus hold button. I think it’s hard to say if Sony will go for a focus hold button or an aperture ring. I would sort of like both, but will have to be content with whichever decision Sony makes here. However, I think it would be advantageous, if these lenses operate the same way as the Sigma I-series lenses. Then they could all be used more interchangeably.
I prefer a rounded aperture, so I hope for a nine or eleven blade rounded diaphragm.

Hm I think f/2.5 with in-body IS should be fine for most travel situations. E.g last year I was in Venice for a few days and the alleys are really dark at night, way darker than the streets in most bigger cities. I got away with a non-IS 35mm f/1.7 on APS-C (just). So the 50 would have been fine. You must be taking pictures in incredibly dim places 😃 But people also have different levels for what is acceptable noise, of course.
IS doesn't do much if your subject moves. You either need faster glass or crank up the ISO.

Looking at the Tamron trio of wide primes, Sigma I-series and the Sony 35/2.8, my guess is for filter size and weight
24/2.8, 55mm and 230g
40/2.5, 49mm or 40.5mm and 150g
50/2.5, 49mm or 40.5mm and 200g
The domed hood of the 35/2.8 ZA does have a 40.5mm thread and so does the 28-60/4-5.6.
Will they have aperture rings? If they’re intended for A7c with fewer wheels, then perhaps, I guess.
I think they can get the 24mm under 200g too. The Tamron is 215g and 1:2 magnification. The Samyang 24 f/2.8 is a mere 120g and has a 49mm filter. Even the Sigma 24 f/3.5 which is all metal weighs just 225g. If they go with 1:4 or 1:5 magnification it should not be hard at all to keep it under 200g. I do think the filter might be a bit bigger on the 24mm, but they ought to be able to do 58mm. The Tamron's 67mm maybe the result of Tamron using 67mm for a huge number of their lenses.

I personally have zero interest in these type of lenses. First I am not obsessed with size and weight as typically you get just okay. Good but not sure so special but we can debate that till the cows come home. I mean I like small but I'm not going to give up speed for it and I certainly can carry any gear all day long . I got a ruined back to prove that.
I could do one lens that's slower not all. Folks you want small light weight and optical quality to knock your socks off . And good cost Voightlander 50mm 3.5. It's killer good
But it's a manual focus lens. These lenses here are to me . Beginner lenses which is fine but not for all of us.

The Samyang is optically rather poor not commensurate with the expectations of a G lens, which is why it will be as long as the Sigma 24/3.5, to achieve better telecentricuty.
Sony uses 40.5, 49, 55 and 62mm filter sizes but not 43, 46, 52 and 58mm among the smaller filter sizes.

Might be interested in the 40mm depending on how well it performs and how much it costs (hopefully less than $500). Would be nice if this is a sign that they will add more small f2.5-ish lenses as I really wish they would make a 100mm f2 (or f2.5) like the old Canon EF lens. A 40/100mm combo used to be my go-to in my Canon days, would love to do it again with Sony.

I agree on the 100/2,5 and 40 combo.
(if any Sony GM lens is less than the equivalent of 1000USD in Sweden I'm going to fall off my chair )

Olympus OM Zuiko f/2.8 wides are typically 170-180 grams.
I used to own Olympus OM film SLRs, so I hope Sony and Sigma can replicate much of that. I’d like Sony G/Sigma I-series 85/2.8, 135/3.5, 200/4, 300/4.5 as well.
