Any more samples? An update on functionality/personal use experience?
Sorry if I'm being a bit of a pest hehe. Just that this is the lens I'm probably the most curious about and the internet has kinda gone dark on info after the release day reviews.
I didn't shoot a lot more with this lens yet as I have quite many recently acquired lenses so I've kept shuffling them around in my daily shooting. I only have a few more samples here so far (these have had some PP done): https://photos.app.goo.gl/dB8xyYvhWcGCry1XA
16 first shots with 40/2.5 G and 11 last shots with the Sigma 28-70/2.8 DG DN (my replaced newer copy that has the ghost resistance deterioration thing fixed), all with my A7C.
For me the 40/2.5 G is pretty nice and a keeper. The best thing about it is the light and small body combined with nice handling and controls. It's about half the weight of Sigma 35/2 DG DN (when including native lens hoods) and it feels significantly smaller and lighter on the A7C so it's my pick when I want to go out with the lightest single lens setup for general purpose walkaround shooting or if I just want to bring out the camera in case I see something I'd like to capture without any plans to shoot. I had the Sony Zeiss 35/2.8 before but the 40/2.5 G beats it with additional controls (aperture ring, AF/MF switch, much nicer manual focusing experience etc.). I think it's perfect for city scenery shots that require good corner-to-corner sharpness. Bokeh rendering is not special like e.g. with Sigma 45/2.8 but on the other hand the lens is very sharp wide open at close distances too and the relatively high contrast / structured bokeh can work in some shots.
In Japan all of these small new G lenses got released on 4/23 (same day as the new 50/1.2 GM got released here). 50/1.2 GM seems to be selling a lot in Japan and it's currently #1 in kakaku.com's lens sales rankings (among all interchangeable lenses for all systems) and it's been sitting there a while already. Surprising since it's so expensive here...

Honestly, the bokeh on those flower shots looks pretty good. Nice bit of crunch without the double edged harshness you'd get out of the 35 1.8 FE. Does the CA correct at all? Know LoCA is harder for editing programs to tone down, but would be interested if the strong reds could be taken off that white flower at all.

Thanks as always for the extra samples!
The new 24/2.8, 40/2.5 and 50/2.5 show as available in several Norwegian stores. Maybe they are available in Sweden too?

Thanks! I'm not really bothered by the CA. Below is another version of the white flower photo without other PP except defringe (100%) in C1 Pro. I think some of it remains: https://photos.app.goo.gl/jg83nN34VC1k62YA9

Hmmm, might prefer the uncorrected version tbh. Seems more vibrant.
Might not be bothered if I weren't looking for a replacement for my Batis 40 atm which is nearly an APO lens. Still, the image out of the 40 G looks to be very good! Thanks for yet another example.

I skipped the PP I had done on the original when doing the "purple fringing adjustment" trial so that would explain why the first one was more vibrant.

Got my 40G yesterday. Already posted some pics from Jonas B's thread.
Corners seem to be pretty even wide open and don't really improve upon stopping down to f/5.6, but they are pretty darned good right from wide open. There is a bit of a "mid-zone dip" of some sort, through I only focused in the center, so perhaps the corners could improve if there is some slight field curvature going on.
Some casual shots from last night's walk about the neighborhood.

I'll be getting the 40 at some point. I'm very excited about this lens and don't have an A7C, nor do I shoot video. I agree that EU and UK prices seem out of step, but $589 for a tiny, light, moderately fast and close focusing lens with an aperture ring and a button? Doesn't seem crazy. The new Sigma 35 is an F2, but is also considerable bigger and cost more and I guarantee you its AF won't run with the Sony, especially not the eye AF. I know that the only thing that matters to some users is axial CA, but it appears to be green behind the plane of focus and I'm not worried about it.
Also, no doubt that the a7C was a target for these lenses, but as an A7RIII user, I love it. The 28-60 makes the camera feel so portable, and I assume this will only be better.
Congrats Sony for these 3 lenses!!! Yes, a 28 F2.5 now please, but small and light and sharp and aperture ring? Keep them coming. ...Show more →
Well... I was too hasty here and felt I should correct myself. I now have an A7C and I bought the Sigma i35, and I can't say as I notice an AF difference from my old FE 35 F1.8, so my guarantee was a gross overstatement. The 40 does look very nice, but I'm passing at this point. Might go for the 24 or the 50 eventually. More options are more better.

I recently purchased the A7c with the 50/2.5 G. I don't get the impression that the G trio is flying off the shelves. The perception seems to be that these 3 lenses are a bit pricey for what they are. It's a shame that these lenses weren't launched alongside the A7c, marketing this body and these lenses together makes far more sense than as standalone products IMO.

I’m really enjoying the 50G. I shot with the Zeiss 55 a few years ago but never really got used to it. I know many see it as a sharp lens, and it is, but it just didn’t suit my style.
The 50G is much faster focusing, and renders incredible detail across the frame at f/8 and above. I kinda wish I’d gone for the 40G, as I shoot primarily landscape, but have gotten a couple of nice Milky Way images so far I hope this lens pushes me to shoot street images more consistently without the size of the 85, though it pairs well with the 85 and 24 I already have.
