I agree Philip_pj, I think Sigma has beat Sony at its own game here: the 'I' series lenses ooze class compared to these new compact offerings from Sony - with much smoother bokeh and rendering; sure, they're bigger and heaver - but represent a finely balanced set of compromises that those with trained eyes can clearly see. The Sony's look like a 'bridge too far' to me, with a slavish adherence to a minimum size and weight ethic, that has resulted in too much compromise in LOCA and rendering (and distortion in the case of the 24mm).
That said, context is everything - and I think these new Sony compacts will sell well as add-on sales to the less demanding demographic they are targeted for: need something wider for your A7C? here's the 24mm Sir; need something faster than the 28-60mm zoom - which would you prefer, 40 or 50mmf2.5?...Show more →
Happy to admit when I'm wrong about something: it seems the 40mm f2.5G and especially the 50 f2.5G have better rendering than I initially thought - based on Dustin Abbotts reviews anyway, shown here: https://dustinabbott.net/2021/07/sony-fe-50mm-f2-5-g-review/
He even goes as far as to call the 50's rendering 'special' with 'gorgeous bokeh quality in most situations'; blimey!

I notice that the 40 G has very little lateral CA, unlike the FE 35 F1.8 or Samyang 45 F1.8. The corners are much better stopped down than those lenses. The out-of-focus is fine. It is a well-corrected lens, so backgrounds are not very smooth like the under corrected lenses. Out-of-focus highlights have a lot of structure more than the 55 F1.8 Sonnar. It has three of the cheap aspherical elements--not the finely finished ones like in GM's.
Anyone else with these have axial play in the focus ring? I am wondering if a seal or something got left off of mine.

I've had my 50mm for about a week now. It's def. sharp. I have a combination of Tamron, Voigtlander and Sigma lenses. May be my sharpest lens 35-50mm range. The contrast is really impressive.
I don't typically like busy bokeh, but i'm finding it better than average. That sharpness is just plain crazy even outside the MFD. The 50mm 1.8 never got this sharp outside the MFD, even at 5.6.
I still like my Sigma 45mm 2.8 a tad more, but I'm not quite sure they are worth comparing at this point. Total diff. look. The Sigma doesn't do well with Contra light. It's not my choice for hiking. For foliage though (up close)...for portraits with busy backgrounds..just overall, a softer look and very pleasing.
Anyway, I hate to say it but I can see why someone would buy both (Well, I did anyway). Nice job Sony. Maybe I'll grab that 40mm now.
P.S. Really like the hood. Small enough to not even bother taking it off. No need to reverse before putting in bag. Sigma is more aestheitcally pleasing but Sony wins for practicality.

Thanks for the thoughts on these two lenses, as I'm looking at both options right now. I expect that the Sony will "work" the best overall being fully native (AF,sharpness, etc), but love what the Sigma offers in terms of IQ rendering.
Would love to see some side by side portraits of the 50G vs the S45, if you're up for it.
Also, I'm planning on on of the compact 24mm as well - prefer the Sigma in this area, as the MFD is much better, but I would prefer to get two lenses within the same family for handling consistency.

Im trying to decide on the 50. I know this is a old thread but i grabbed again the A7c and sold my APSC system as i want something to match my A1 better, same battery and such. Than on its way is the new 16-35 PZ as i think it will be a great event setup and travel with the A7c and Im selling my Sigma 35 as being somewhat redundant but looking squarely at this 50 and getting ready to buy it. I think i can deal with some of its short comings and small would be nice for travel. Just wondering since its been awhile since this thread start if any reservations on grabbing it. I like the functions of this as it matches my 16-35 and my 70-200 so i can cheat and setup similarly the A1 and A7c. It’s a little pricy but im okay with it. I planned on keeping my Sony 20 1.8 as having at least one fast lenses above 2.5

The 50G looks nice, I think the main considerations I'd look at would be the Sigma 45i or Sony 55. The Sigma has a smoother rendering and is about the same size. The Sony 55 is an oldie but goodie, a stop faster aperture and similar size once you put the hood on the 50G.

Not a fan of the 55 never really have been . The Sigma 45 im concerned about AF and it is a little bigger. Have to look but does it have the same buttons
Sigma no focus hold button which I make crop mode. Filter 55 vs 49. same price though. Some trade offs Tough call.

I chalk AF issues on the Sigma up to the algorithm on different cameras. The Sigma's AF has been fine on my A7IV after being terrible on my A7rII, but I don't know about the A7c. I would guess the Sony 50G would be about as good as you can get though.
Physically, yeah the Sigma lacks the custom button which could be nice to have with the A7c having fewer controls. Size-wise though, it's only 1mm difference in length, I don't think you'd notice.
Check out this review that directly compares the Sigma and Sony to help you decide:
Tough call, yes, the differences seem relatively minor. Price could be a differentiator though--you can find the Sigma at half the price these days, around $250 used or even new on sale if you wait.

I like the idea of the little 24-40-50 Sony G trio. Linear AF motors and weather sealing is nice. My hesitation is that they include extra features that I would not use on such lenses. I rarely use aperture rings preferring to control via cmd dials. Plus the aperture ring is so close to the focus ring my fat fingers would end up turning both. With gloves on I'd be in big trouble. The focus breathing is quite pronounced on these lenses so I would not use them for video. Having the de-click aperture switch for video seems counterproductive. I'd disable the focus hold button. Too close to everything else and I'd be guaranteed to press it inadvertently.
Sony crammed too many physical controls on these tiny barrels. Physical controls are expensive. A hefty percentage of the cost is for these controls.
