That is an example where Lenstip offers an explanation that is almost certainly wrong. Lateral CA does not reduce as the aperture gets narrow, but it doesn't increase either. Lateral CA is unaffected by aperture as it occurs on the focus plane. Lenstip's explanation there is nonsense. If I had to guess it is worsening astigmatism that is causing the poor performance as the lens stops down, but that is a guess. You can't tell from the tests that Lenstip does.
Don’t know what exactly is going on, but Sony’s MTF charts don’t show increasing astigmatism at f/8 vs f/2.8..

I think Sony and Sigma have similar goals here. Sigma is designing lenses with the FP camera in mind which is of course a very small camera, and these lenses happen to work well for Sony too. Sony is developing lenses for their A7c camera, which is a small camera too. So perhaps it isn't shocking they are making similar lenses. Now was the Sony A7c partly brought to market as a response to the Sigma FP, perhaps, but I don't think we will ever know.
I'm referring to the 2013 Sony A7. Once they decided they would reuse the e-mount for full frame and made a relatively compact full frame mirrorless.

It may be that they aren't modeling that change fully. Keep in mind Sony's MTF is just modeled not actually measured. It also very well might be that astigmatism isn't increasing. I just offered that as one possible explanation for the poor outer zone performance as the lens is stopped down.

This is a comparison I’m interested in. I currently have the Zony 35, and 55, and am considering replacing the 35, or perhaps both, with the 40G.
The lenses have pretty bad bokeh outlining imo, but I find the full-body portraits to have nice 3D pop. Especially the man and child on paddle board, woman on bench reading and the scooter really stand out to me.

I pre-ordered the 40/2.5 for my A7C... Can always use some additional small lenses for that camera with different qualities although I already have the full Sigma I-series and lots of small CV glass.
Not planning to get the others as my Sigma 24/3.5 covers the small 24mm lens ground and since 40/2.5 and 50/2.5 are so similar + I already have lots of 50mm glass. 40mm will be another nice option for single lens walkaround use and for travel as well being so light.

Good to know we'll be getting another certified first plebeian sample gallery on my favorite of the trio . If you remember and it's not too much trouble, mind commenting on how dark you have to go (shutter/iso) before you have trouble focusing, if at all?

Thanks! All of these lenses are going to be released in Japan on 4/23 so I should start getting some samples with the 40/2.5 around that date.
I don't usually shoot in such darkness that I would ever have trouble focusing. When I shoot in the dark the subjects are usually lit, e.g. shopfronts, and such and then there is no trouble focusing. I usually shoot still subjects (nowadays since there are no events going on) and keep my ISO at 100 until the shutter speeds start going so slow that I have to raise ISO to get stable shots with IBIS and then it's usually ISO 640 as next step. Sometimes I might go down to ISO 1600 / 3200 or thereabouts when shooting some city scenery in relative darkness but AF is usually never an issue in such shooting.
I don't have any small kids (my son is 18 and he doesn't like to be photographed too much) so I don't get too much human photography target practice in low light indoors. So I won't be able to do so much AF performance related testing or comparisons but I'll certainly share some outdoor samples after I've received the lens.

Yeah, I have a toddler who still moves uncontrollably, our apartment is pretty poorly lit even with modern lamps + bulbs, and during the winter I've had to shoot ISO 6400 during the day at a shutter speed of 1/80s .
These conditions absolutely drive me batty using my Batis 40, and while I could bear it before picking up my 20 G... using that has been so easy and straightforward (not a 100% hit rate, but still) that I ended up semi-abandoning my 40 despite preferring the focal length and slightly preferring the output.
I know the effective light gathering is the same between these lenses (always use f2.5 on the Batis inside because of RSA) but I know Zeiss has done at least two things to screw up AF operation & that Sony has better knowledge of their algorithms and better AF motors so I'm fairly hopeful that it's a major improvement in low light AF operation. If you can, I'd appreciate any info you can give.

I received my 40/2.5G on Friday. I did some shooting with it on Friday and Saturday, so here are some SOOC samples taken on my A7C: https://photos.app.goo.gl/zVNMEVHPhvgvZZJC9
Pretty much all were taken either at f5.6 or wide open f2.5. Lens correction settings on camera were set as Auto for distortion (it's automatically set to Auto with this lens and setting can't be changed) and Auto for color fringing, and Off for vignetting. The lens is nice and light on the A7C and I like the aperture ring and manual focus feel.
I used silent / electronic shutter all the time with these shots.

Huh, this is something new, isn't it? I don't recall having this option blocked on any lens I used...

The setting's been grayed out and set at Auto with some other lenses too, mostly zooms but also some primes that have more distortion. Not sure why they decided to do it in this case though but I don't mind. In C1 Pro the distortion correction can be disabled regardless of the Auto setting if wanted and I usually use Auto for that setting in any case. It's not new (I think it was the case with my Nex-6 with its kit lens already in 2012).

Ach, yes - you are right, I didn't remember it from my nex-5r and 16-50 days .

Any more samples? An update on functionality/personal use experience?
Sorry if I'm being a bit of a pest hehe. Just that this is the lens I'm probably the most curious about and the internet has kinda gone dark on info after the release day reviews.
