Thanks! All of these lenses are going to be released in Japan on 4/23 so I should start getting some samples with the 40/2.5 around that date.
I don't usually shoot in such darkness that I would ever have trouble focusing. When I shoot in the dark the subjects are usually lit, e.g. shopfronts, and such and then there is no trouble focusing. I usually shoot still subjects (nowadays since there are no events going on) and keep my ISO at 100 until the shutter speeds start going so slow that I have to raise ISO to get stable shots with IBIS and then it's usually ISO 640 as next step. Sometimes I might go down to ISO 1600 / 3200 or thereabouts when shooting some city scenery in relative darkness but AF is usually never an issue in such shooting.
I don't have any small kids (my son is 18 and he doesn't like to be photographed too much) so I don't get too much human photography target practice in low light indoors. So I won't be able to do so much AF performance related testing or comparisons but I'll certainly share some outdoor samples after I've received the lens....Show more →
Yeah, I have a toddler who still moves uncontrollably, our apartment is pretty poorly lit even with modern lamps + bulbs, and during the winter I've had to shoot ISO 6400 during the day at a shutter speed of 1/80s .
These conditions absolutely drive me batty using my Batis 40, and while I could bear it before picking up my 20 G... using that has been so easy and straightforward (not a 100% hit rate, but still) that I ended up semi-abandoning my 40 despite preferring the focal length and slightly preferring the output.
I know the effective light gathering is the same between these lenses (always use f2.5 on the Batis inside because of RSA) but I know Zeiss has done at least two things to screw up AF operation & that Sony has better knowledge of their algorithms and better AF motors so I'm fairly hopeful that it's a major improvement in low light AF operation. If you can, I'd appreciate any info you can give.
