These lenses make me wonder if I should get the 35mm f1.4 GM still. I was thinking of the 35mm f1.4 GM as a good all-around solution but the 40mm f2.5 + 50mm f1.2/f1.4 might be a better fit for my needs (my next prime lens is 135mm).
35mm f1.4 and 50mm f2.5 is also worth considering - guess I'll wait for the reviews - lots of options!

My Plan keep the 35 1.4 pre order and I just added the Sigma 65 to my kit like 5 minutes ago. Than once these are out ill grab the 40mm
So Ill be for travel 14, sony 20,40,65. for real work 14,20,35,65,135
Need to sell my Sony 35 1.8 and Sigma 105 macro now to get the Batis.

You are not a fan of 85 Guy? What happened to the VM 75 also?

Eager to see how the 40/50 compare to the Sigma 45. They’ll likely autofocus better, but rendering wil be interesting to see. These are some good looking lenses, I’m glad to see Sony making them. Seem like great lenses for an A7c.

This is great. Love the coherence of the Leica Lux/Cron/Summarit lens stack and Fuji’s semi coherent lineup of small, weather sealed, high quality “Fujicron” glass paired with their faster, bigger counterparts and bodies to match each option.
I hope they make some tele options as well, specifically a 100/2.5-3.5.

Unless one travels every other week, I really don't see a point in buying a travel lens and a regular lens. I think GM lenses are now small enough in size to be good for occasional travel for most people.
These new G lenses and Sigma I series + A7C = Keep your camera in your laptop bag and take it everywhere with you level of portability.
Agreed, I’d rather travel with a fast compact lens like the 35GM and just take fewer lenses with me overall. To me, these are more like everyday carry lenses. An A7c with this 40G would be a small package that I could easily fit into non-camera bags.

I need f2 or faster lens for travel as many times I'm in light challenged situations and need the extra stops. I'm ok using lenses in the 300 to 400 gram range for travel...still able to carry camera and lens all day long. These slower lenses are ok for times when I'm out not specifically for photography and want my gear to be light as possible. That is how I use my Sony 35 2.8 lens.

I can see either the 40G or 50G fill the gap between my 25 & 135 Batis's. I hope the color rendering of these new lenses is not too much on the cool side.

Too slow. $698 to $898 is f/1.8 price range. My guess is $500, plus or minus $50.
I'm of the same mind . . . I think it would be a mistake to see these at $700+, even with excellent rendering and IQ, as that would be priced substantially more $$$ than what Sigma seems to be doing with the i Series.
Regarding the 40 in particular, I think back to the Canon 40 f/2.8 pancake that I adapted for a long time that had superb IQ and could be found for less than $100. Sure these have better AF & more features, but that would be a big leap in what they think they can charge for slow, small (not even pancake) lenses at focal lengths that are likely already covered by either faster primes or a zoom in most enthusiasts' kits.

Too slow for you, but not for many others. I would pay $700 if these have excellent optics.
f/2.5 @ 40mm is just fine for 90% of what I would use it for and I HIGHLY prize wide open IQ and small size and weight. These lenses will work and look great on my A7RIII and hopefully an in-my-near-future A7C.
These lenses have pushed me over to actually getting the A7C, which I suspect is what Sony had in mind.
I was expecting them to look like my 35/2.8 Zony with just a focus ring, but these are fantastic with aperture ring and a function button. 49mm filter size allows me to use an inverted metal shade that I use on my 35/2.8 and RX1RII.
Let's hope they are excellent right from wide open and perfect at f/4. Excellent flare/ghosting resistance would be huge for me as well. I want nice sun stars, but rounded aperture blades seem to be the thing so I'm not expecting much in this department.

For a decent travel kit I think this lineup would be great:
20/1.8
40/2.8
85/1.8
factors of ~2x different in focal length (or FOV) which is what I strive for in my lens kits.
Now they just need to come out with an excellent 180/4G and I'd be all set. Currently I use the excellent, but heavy 180/4 CV APO adapted.
The RX1RII is looking like it's ever closer to be the last of its kind unfortunately.

I am guessing $600 or so will be the price. The Sigma 24 f/3.5 I series is $550, and the Sigma 45 f/2.8 I series is $500. I suspect these will be a little more, but not a huge amount more.

These look like a great addition, although it took Sony too long to introduce (should have happened 4-5 years ago) and allowed Sigma to preempt them with the I -series in the compact segment. Still, the more choices the better and I look forward to comparisons.
I wonder what is up with Zeiss, they are being crowded out by others.

Not too slow for me. Too slow for the $700 - $900 price range. I happily shoot with my 35/2.8 Zony and Sigma 45/2.8. If these lenses turn out to be anything like Sigma 45 with working AF, I will be tempted to switch my bigger and faster lenses with slower G lenses.

I was looking at adding the Sigma 24mm and 45mm I lenses to my A7c kit, but will likely go this direction instead. Love the look, build, custom button, and expect the AF and IQ will be up to current Sony levels. Hoping prices are reasonable.

They will be priced as the G lenses that they are, and I would guess $698, maybe $798, as most likely. Think of the max you think you would pay and add a hundred dollars.

OTOH, a fantastic 2 lens kit for those who own a high resolution body, could be 24/55
Means 24/35/55/85 with crop mode.

I think it depends on their strategy for these lenses. They definitely could price them in that range (and I'll probably buy them if they are), but I think there is also the possibility they are looking at these lenses as opportunities to steal market share.
Stealing from crop sensor platforms and 3rd party manufacturers.
If that is a key part of their product strategy, I'd expect them to list at a lower price point. Likely directly targeting the Sigma 24/45 combo. This will also keep them within range of several aps-c/m43 lenses.
We'll know tomorrow it sounds like.
