FYI, RF50 focuses using its front element group and the further your focus point is, the deeper the focus group is inside the barrel. That means you get more mechanical vignetting problem with full body to further away shots. The Sony should render more consistently throughout. That's why I think both the GM and the RF look remarkably similar at closer distance shots (like these videos show). Now I need one video showing me how the Nikkor S 50/1.2 justifies for its size and weight.

From the reviews I have seen, Sony 50mm gm is as good as Canon's RF 1.2, which I owned for a short period of time, so I pre-ordered one because the Canon RF was a stunning lens in almost every aspect.
So what made you sell the Canon RF 50/1.2L? Currently trying to decide between the 50/1.2 GM, RF 50/1.2L, or just stay with my FE T* Planar 50/1.4 ZA.

My guess is that it will be a touch over AUD$3k. Will hopefully pick one up at the next DigiDirect 15% off sale.
$3199 AUD at Digi so pretty good guess! They actually do 20% every few months so wait for that, although they probably won't include this lens for quite some time.

I can get 15% off the DigiDirect pre-order price and am debating whether I should wait for a better discount.
The GAS is strong with this one as I have been waiting for some time to fill the gap between my 35 1.2 and 85 1.4.

Probably by being the only modern 50 1.2 that is (somewhat) corrected for focus breathing. Now if only Nikon had a video camera to compete with the S III/α1 Sony'd be in trouble with the video market .
All of Nikon's S-line primes but the 58 0.95 are corrected for focus breathing IIRC.

For sure, until the next GAS attack. That's when 50 will become too tight for indoor and landscape shots and too short for telephoto needs. It might also start to feel heavy all of the sudden as a general puropse lens.

I’m getting a strong feeling that once I strap this lens on my camera I may never take it off.
Family outing? “I think I’ll just take the 50GM.”
Portraits? “Hmm...I think I’ll take, yes, the 50GM.”

I'm going to look at the images.
Yeah, they are a bit over the top with that statement imho. I do like the size/weight and IQ combo in the GM the best though .

I searched the thread didn't find anyone mentioning this comparison between the Sony GM and Canon RF 50mm f1.2 lenses. This one is interesting for its side by side comparison shots:
He thinks for all that practically matters, the two lenses are nearly identical in optical performance. Auto focus on the Sony is quieter and faster. He feels the Sony is more comfortable to use because its narrows down near its base leaving more space between the lens and the hand grip. On the Canon, this space is tighter since the lens is quite fatter at its base.
It seems to me the Sony is a bit wider than 50mm (compared to both Canon 50mm rf and Sony 50mm Planar). For me, the weight difference is the reason to prefer the Sony lens.

I switched from Canon to Sony because EOS R was far behind Sony A7iii at the time. It had nothing to do with the RF 50 1.2L, which was fantastic. If Canon had R6 or R5 at the time, i probably would have stayed with Canon because of the Canon colors. Now, I have heard Sony's color science has finally caught up with Canon in the latest cameras, eg A7Siii, so i am going to wait for the A7IV.

Superstition. Sony colors have been fine since long time ago and Canon colors in general are no better (when shot in raw but I don't know about in-camera jpg's). My A7r iii is great.

use a picture profile if you want "canon colors"
research it
I use a modified S-Cinetone because while canon is nice, I prefer the Arri look and I have a profile that approaches that look. More subtle tweaks needed, but I'm fairly happy with how it is now, and been using JPEG's SOOC a lot lately. Phase +2 is a good start.
there's a youtuber that gives in camera settings to match S-cinetone if you like that sort of look. Highly configurable IN CAMERA!

From that video, the bokeh on the Sony seems significantly nicer. Less cat eye and less onion rings. And the AF speed seems almost night and day. Those seems like pretty practical considerations.

In case this hasn't been posted, this is the interview with the GM 50/1.2 engineer team. They did put an emphasis on the quality of bokeh (not just the amount from the f/1.2) but with the mention of the aperture mechanism design.... Also, XA element and Sony propriety linear AF motors really highlight the technical advantages of this lens over the competitors:
