A classic normal focal length prime lens with an updated, sleek design, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM is characterized by its speed and relatively compact form factor. The versatile focal length suits shooting everything from street, portraiture, and landscape to documentary subjects, and the fast-maximum aperture excels in low light and controlling depth of field. Also, as a G Master lens, it features an advanced optical design for well-corrected imagery with a high degree of sharpness and clarity.
The combination of the lens's remarkable maximum f/1.2 aperture and 11-blade circular aperture mechanism contribute to the gorgeous G Master bokeh that really makes portrait and other subjects stand out. Three XA (eXtreme Aspherical) elements provide excellent spherical aberration control by reducing a variety of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion.
Each element features Nano AR II coating that suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Balancing the optics is an XD Linear Motor system that uses four separate focusing motors to deliver especially quiet, precise, and quick autofocus performance. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design and fluorine-coated front lens element to support shooting in inclement conditions.

Not a lens for me (not a fan of 50mm and this will be very big), but it's a great lens to see in the Sony system, and I have to imagine they'll find a way to make it smaller than the Nikon Z and Canon RF lenses.

@1.2, I’m sure it’s going to be huge. This is a hard pass.
Will it? Sony managed a small 35 f1.4, has breathing issues. I think if they do the same sacrifice, they can make the 1.2 smaller. 700g would be a bust for me, we’ll see if Sony going to break their core philosophy.

I suspect it WILL be smaller than the RF counterpart (what Sony lens isn't ) but will lack the rendering magic of that particular lens.

If this kind of rendering is the "magic" you are talking about I seriously hope the Sony lens will be nothing like it: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jenslpz/44180523490/in/album-72157703320431655/

Ahahahaha. Knew they weren't gonna replace the 50 1.4 ZA like they were the 35.
Wonder how compact they're gonna manage to make this one though. I know it's one of their design tenants, so obviously some effort has been made. I think the only disappointing signal by this release is that it's looking more likely the 20 1.8 G was a one-off, and we won't be seeing more 1.8 lenses on a GM level.

I have mixed feelings on this as it likely means there will never be a lightweight (500g?) 50mm 1.4 GM. My only hope is that they might release a G version that is as strong as the 20mm 1.8 G is at its focal length.
As for this 1.2, I'm curious about the size and weight and to see if Sony's prowess in making lenses smaller extends here at all. The Sony-Zeiss Planar comes in at 780g so I could see them making this around the same size. On the positive side, if they managed that it would make the lens ~200-300g lighter than 1.2s like the Sigma 35 and Canon RF 50. The trouble with that is even at 750-900g it reaches a size and weight where you have to weigh taking it (literally) versus other options covering the same focal length.
For now I'm generally interested but maybe not as much as if it were a 1.4.

It's a pretty special lens, and at least to my eye pops considerably at f/1.2 in a way that most lenses do not. It's very sharp wide open with a beautiful falloff, IMO. If Sony makes one that can match it, it'd be great. Though I also think the ZA50/1.4 is a very good lens. Not quite as good as the Canon, but not too far off.
Here's a shot I took with the RF 50/1.2 wide open on my R6 showing that pop you can get with the lens:

Exactly. The 50 ZA is a beautiful lens, one of the best 50mm lenses made, with gorgeous rendering. If all the new GM adds is f1.2, that is not worth giving up the possibility of a small 50mm 1.4 GM.
I do like f1.2--one of the reasons I keep my Canon EF 50/1.2L. This Canon lens is fairly small for what it does. Maybe Sony can match that and also its rendering or the rendering of the 50 ZA. That might be enough for me to be interested, swapping the EF 50/1.2L for a Sony version of the same size and weight and quality and visual interest.
