The 50 1.4 ZA has always been my go to lens for many situations. The rendering is beautiful. If the 0 1.2 has faster AF and is sharper that would be great, but there is something special about the 50 1.4ZA. I just ordered another while waiting for the Alpha 1. The question is do I return it since it's unopened and wait for the 50 1.2?

The Canon RF 50 f/1.2 is $2,300.
The Nikon 50 f/1.2S for Z mount is $2,100, so I expect that to be the range for the price of the Sony 50 f/1.2 GM. Probably not less than $2,100 nor more than $2,300.

From many of Sony’s more recent releases (GM 24, GM 35, G 20, A7c) they seem to understand and value smaller size. So, I would be quite surprised if they release a bigma type GM 50. I think, like the GM 35, it will come in smaller than we are used to. And I hope it doesn’t draw like that RF 50 and 85 1.2’s...Sony also seems get the rendering balance better than the RF line.
I also think it’s interesting how we are getting duplicate high-end prime lenses for the Zeiss offerings while also not getting any Zeiss primes, either Batis or Loxia, or an RX1R3–it’s seems that the Sony/Zeiss partnership has withered.
And I am not much of a 50mm shooter, but the ZA 50/1.4 has a very pleasant draw for a highly corrected modern 50mm to my eyes, with loads of separation/volume/3-D. Very curious to see this 50 GM draw.

It's a pretty special lens, and at least to my eye pops considerably at f/1.2 in a way that most lenses do not. It's very sharp wide open with a beautiful falloff, IMO. Sharpness is for sure very very good. It is a very good lens, I fully agree. I just have difficulties with exclamations like "magic" etc.
Personally, I dislike the strong vignetting and the bokeh balls, which are not round from f2 on (Samples from Cameralabs, Opticallimits).
If the Sony is a GM, I am sure that falloff etc. will be pleasing. Then it is to the peepers to find differences at 200%.

Ahahahaha. Knew they weren't gonna replace the 50 1.4 ZA like they were the 35.
Wonder how compact they're gonna manage to make this one though. I know it's one of their design tenants, so obviously some effort has been made. I think the only disappointing signal by this release is that it's looking more likely the 20 1.8 G was a one-off, and we won't be seeing more 1.8 lenses on a GM level.
I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that there will not be a 50 f/1.8G. I think such a lens is very possible and would be a great fit with the system especially if they can keep the price to about $500. I would love to see Sony have a 20 f/1.8G; 28 f/1.8G, 50 f/1.8G, and a 100 f/1.8 (or maybe f/2)G as a nice set of quality lenses that are smaller and high quality.

Nice shot! Looks good. I think it's tough to judge when the background is so OOF, but I wonder if the RF 50/1.2 is like the old Sony 35/1.4...nice rendering, great transition zone, complicated and somewhat unattractive background, especially with specular highlights. I can be guilty at times of judging a lens purely on how it renders a background with lots of foliage or specular highlights, rather than looking at the transition zone or the background when there is even illumination. I find different lenses do very differently in those situations.

I had the R5 and the RF50 1.2 for a little while. I ended up not keeping the R5 and have the alpha 1 on order, but I did like the rendering of the RF 50 1.2...

It will also lack "Canon colors" and "Canon menus". What a loser.

Yes, minus the focus shift made me sell the EF 50/1.2 pretty soon after getting it. Or, if it the focus shift is impossible to avoid make sure it focuses at working aperture (which I always prefer anyway now with our live view viewfinders).

I disagree, the 24GM, 35GM, both have fantastic rendering.
this is NOT a ZA lens we're talking about
the RF is sharp with nice blur, and so is the 24GM, 35GM, 35 f1.2 Art, 85 f1.4 art, 85GM
compared to those lenses, it's not special
there's little reason to believe sony will be a miss when it comes to this lens.

No please no. What happened to the 50mm 1.4 GM, you know, the nice small one we were looking forward to?

I agree that it is there, but IMO it is another lens that needs an update. It uses the older type of aspherical elements that causes onion rings in the bokeh. It has quite a bit of axial CA until at least f/2.8, and the rendering of the bokeh is a bit rough in transition zones. Yes it is sharp, yes it is small, and yes it focusses fast. For a lot of people that is what they care about most, but to me the Sony 20 f/1.8 goes further with good control of CA and nice rendering. I think Sony would do well to replicate that type of performance with a 28mm f/1.8G (where the 28 f/2 is less than stellar), a 50mm f/1.8G (where the 50 f/1.8 non-G is good for the price but doesn't compete in performance with the Nikon 50 f/1.8S and the 55 f/1.8 ZA is looking a bit long in the tooth as described above), and at 100mm where Sony could tip its hat to its Minolta heritage with a 100 f/1.8 (or f/2) G.
