Not deal breakers, but something to keep in mind I think.
The Canon has clearly more vignetting, half a stop more (if opticallimits is correct), look after 6:15 in Manny's video, too. Looks like the Sony is comparable to the Nikon, here.
Distortion is a bit higher (0.6% vs. 0.25% (Nikon) vs. 0.2% (Canon)), but nothing to be concerned about , imo. I think Sony went the Sigma route in trading size for distortion.

Yeah, I meant that some compromises are expected. As a happy Sigma 85dn user, I can live with distortion correction . Just not sure what impact this level of astigmatism can have.
Still, seems like a reasonable trade.

Smaller, cheaper, and quite a bit lighter than the mirrorless 50 1.2 competition, while it seems to be sharper and faster focusing as well. A seriously impressive lens.
I own a 55 1.8 right now and the Mitakon 50 0.95, would happily replace them both with this but the price difference is a little steep for me personally. Really surprised by how good this 50 1.2 is overall though

I'm actually REALLY impressed with the vignetting. @ f1.4 it has less vignetting than the Sigma 40mm 1.4 and at f2 they are tied. I know not the same focal length but...

optical vignetting is not bad either. Better than the Canon from the examples I've seen.

This is actually encouraging me to buy the 50mm 1.4 ZA when I consider the price difference. I mean, that still is a very good lens at about 1k or less used.

I consider this as a serious contender (despite its high price tag) considering that it is only as heavy and big as the 50mm f1.4 planar (only slightly fatter). I guess the main question for most is how much of advantage it offers against the already spectacular Zeiss planar to justify the price difference. I am not personally concerned about the AF speed nor about the extra half stop light. If I sell my used planar, I have to add about C$1400 to get this lens. I doubt for me personally, the extra cost is justified. I may however wait until they start showing up in the used market in a year or two. Then I will go ahead and get one. Or by then, Sigma may also have released a lighter and smaller yet excellent 50mm f1.4 lens at a lower price. That's what I like about the Sony system having many lens options to choose from.

The fun part about a maturing lens lineup is that there are many more options and as those options age, even just by a year or so, people (like us) tend to want to experiment and that’s where the B&S board comes in. There will be a number of great opportunities to own lenses like the 35 and 50 GMs in the next few years. Try your hand at the VCs 35 APO and 50 APO. Or scoop up old favorites like the Loxias. There are so many lens lineups that make sense now.
If you had told me 5 years ago when I got into this system that we would have class leading glass at nearly every focal length I’d have likely cried. We’re spoiled for choice. At 50 alone we have outstanding options with the ZA, the GM, CV APO, CV 1.2, 55 1.8, and sigma 45.

I'm eager to see a mirrorless designed Tamron 35mm 1.4 SP but perhaps they'll go another direction and offer a more price competitive 1.2 series.
It's almost a guarantee we'll get a 35 and 50m Sigma DG DN in the near future as well. Might be worth the wait.

My hope is with Sigma also. They’ve been on a roll recently with their excellent dg dn lenses being smaller, lighter, and with excellent image quality. If they have a 50/1.4 in the pipeline that is as good as their large 50/1.4 now is, but weighs 450-500 grams, I’m sure they’ll sell a ton.
Still...this 50/1.2 is a marvel and I can hear it calling my name. I’m putting in my earplugs now.

Maybe you just don't like F1.2 lenses? There is a thing as too much bokeh. I mean not for me, but for people.
Yep, seems to be the case that 50/1.2 is too much bg blur to me, even at full body distances. This just somehwat surprised me - but is of course no argument against this fine lens.
So, lets hope that everybody loves the gm and sells the za cheap.

I'm glad I waited living with the 55 1.8 for so long. Sold my Canon 50 1.2, (which I never really like on the Sony), I hope it performs as well as some of the early reviews are saying. Great size too! Far from cheap but something you have to pay if you want to play

I'm in the same boat. I got really excited when I saw the leaks, and progressively less and less excited when I consider the fact that my 50ZA already produces excellent images and the price diff is $1000USD (assuming I sell mine for $1000)...I'll have to see what the EDU discount on this is a few months down the road.
