But...(and yes, I’m whining)...how I would have loved a 450 gram 50/1.4 with stellar optics at $1,300. THAT’S a lens that would have a permanent home on my camera.

Yeah... hopefully Sigma delivers something like that. I'd even take a 50/1.8 or 50/2 depending on the compromises (price, optics). I'd be in the market for this Sony if I were more of a 50mm shooter, but I'm putting my pennies into a 35GM instead. I'm impressed it at least doesn't appear to be obscenely large and heavy from rumors so far.
The 55/1.8 is a small, light and fantastic lens. What don't you like about it?

Hard to get close enough to a bird with a 50mm lens. I'd save that cash for the A1 if I were you
True, only need one faster 50mm and right now I'm seeing my Planar 50mm f/1.4 ZA as that lens on Sony which I already own.
It will be interesting though to see how it compares in focus speed to the excellent FE 135mm f/.8 GM which I own

Julia Trotti put out her hands on review of the 50mm f1.2 GM
I really enjoy her videos. Aside from being a very talented photographer. I find her voice very soothing. If I could make my Siri or Alexa sound like Julia, I would! 😀
Looks very good to me as far as you can tell from these samples.
Frankly, I can't understand why Sony doesn't use better / more endeavored photographers for these first impressions.
I just wouldn't upload a picture like that https://www.flickr.com/photos/markgaler/51037282856/in/album-72157718647687843/
at least not if you want to show the technical qualities of the camera and lens. For me such a picture (and many other samples) shows worrying weaknesses in autofocus.
In general, on my 4 professional screens (2x Full HD, 1x 4k, 1x 5k) his images always seem to me to be hardcore over-sharpened JPEGS.
Mark may be a good photographer, but I think these sample images (similar to what he has done with A7c and 28-60) are pretty ...
