For a lens like this I an 100% about the rendering. Give me dreamy, soft rolloff and Nikon 58mm bokeh please Sony.
I have more than enough technically excellent lenses and for it's use case I'd like a bit of character. People interested in MTF curves will probably be at F11 anyway
Doesn't look like it so far, modern soulless all the way. But look at those sharp corners! They're all an image ever needs!
I should add that Sony are between a rock and a hard place, catch 22. If they make a character lens the Canon and Nikonites will say they can't do f1.2 with the narrower lens mount or that they don't have the prowess to make a 'modern' 1.2 lens.

The 55/1.8 is a small, light and fantastic lens. What don't you like about it?
The 55, for me, is a bit of a Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde lens, I think. It has awful bokeh fringing, like truly awful, and bright spots or light sources in the background can can get messy, very cluttered inner circles. But when there are no such things in the background, rendering is very nice with very smooth falloff in focus transition zones. Performance aside, I had 3 copies, all with QC issues; two with severely tilted plane of focus. That's why I got rid of mine. Now, I think the Sigma 45 does what I wanted the 55 to do, only better. I miss the light, but I can deal.

Fantastic lp/mm wide open, even higher than the 35 GM at f1.4!
Must have for me!
Sharper at f/1.2 than the 55/1.8 at any aperture. That's impressive, truly. Still not a lens I'd spend that much money on, but they appear to have made a nice trade off at f/1.2 to get super sharp center with only good borders...as it should be IMO. I look forward to some bokeh analysis.

I got lucky. Have a great copy, but now the 50 GM will be bought, too, one or two of our 50s need to go, maybe even the 55.

Agree with this. Also, on a more pedantic level, I really want all my primes to have aperture rings these days. The 55 is fine, just not something worth owning for me in a world where the 45mm exists.
Whoa, is it only my taste or is this way too much background separation in these samples? Looks quite unnatural to me ...
Perhaps I should not look to replace my 55 with this lens (in a year when prices settle), but see this as a good opportunity to get a used 50 ZA. Still, impressive lens.

Lenstip samples always look soft... I don't know how they shoot them, but it seems that they deactivate any sharpness slider they can find.
We will see, I doubt it. We have field curvature to consider, too. The 50/1.4 has a significant midzone dip, shown by DPreview in their review and lensrentals optical bench measurements.
For me at f1.2/f1.4 I would like to have the inner 2/3rds of the image circle to be sharp and dont care about the very corners at all!

Agreed. Being an 'A' mode shooter when my camera isn't on a tripod, I've always loved having an aperture ring. That was the hardest transition for me when I shot Nikon, upgrading my 'D' lenses to 'AF-S' meant giving up the aperture ring. Now that Sony and Sigma have brought them back, I don't know if I can go without. I just like the them. I use Loxia lenses for landscape shooting but borrow the Batis 135 sometimes...I love that lens' performance but I'm always reaching for a (non-existant) aperture ring. Amazing how quickly my brain has reverted to its natural state so now I fumble around without one.
I think, in the future, I'll be quite content with Sigma and Sony GM lenses...

Yes, very unnatural...not my taste. Looks like the subjects were just pasted into the scene.

It is just for demonstration. The nice thing about 1.2 is to use it at larger distances to still get a nice blur of the background, but still get an idea of the surroundings.
I don't like f1.2 to be used a MFD, same thing as using a 200/2 or 135/1.8 wide open when being too close.

Maybe you just don't like F1.2 lenses? There is a thing as too much bokeh. I mean not for me, but for people.
