Yup, the pain of modern lens prices is really acute in CDN dollars haha. The Canon is $3000 and the Nikon is $2800 so I figured the Sony would be around there. Both of those are close to 1kg so I figured the Sony would be around there too...if it's 700g, that's solid work.
Anyways, I'll target the Sony 35/1.4 GM at $1900 and tell myself it's a deal...

Yea this thing is going to have to knock it out of the park for $2,200...but then again I wouldn't bet against it based on their other GM prime releases as of late.

Agree. I’ve no doubt that this 50 will be superb.
But...(and yes, I’m whining)...how I would have loved a 450 gram 50/1.4 with stellar optics at $1,300. THAT’S a lens that would have a permanent home on my camera.

Yeah... hopefully Sigma delivers something like that. I'd even take a 50/1.8 or 50/2 depending on the compromises (price, optics). I'd be in the market for this Sony if I were more of a 50mm shooter, but I'm putting my pennies into a 35GM instead. I'm impressed it at least doesn't appear to be obscenely large and heavy from rumors so far.

Meh. The only real reason (for me) to switch would've been if it were a good bit smaller than the ZA. Being more or less the same size makes it a no go. $2200 is the icing on the cake. Nice to see they finally did it (I've been predicting a 50/1.2 for 2 years now) so that they can shut up the "Oh but the mount is too small!" crowd, and more importantly: so they can finally make my 28GM.

Yea a sharp copy of the 50 1.4 against this will be interesting for sure. As the 1.4 has a very good following.
But- I'd be lying if I didn't admit that a 50 f/1.2 lens with great IQ wide-open as well as corner-to-corner sharpness stopped down, with accurate/fast eye-AF is going to be very tempting even at $2k.

Maybe Sigma can deliver a 50/2 with the same quality as has been demonstrated by their 65/2 in another thread here at FM.

For a lens like this I an 100% about the rendering. Give me dreamy, soft rolloff and Nikon 58mm bokeh please Sony.
I have more than enough technically excellent lenses and for it's use case I'd like a bit of character. People interested in MTF curves will probably be at F11 anyway

MTF is usually already worse at f/11 due to the onset of diffraction.

Sony 50/1.2 GM is $2,198.
Canon RF 50/1.2 L is $2,299 at B&H
Nikon Z 50/1.2 S is $2,096 at B&H
So the new Sony 50/1.2 GM is pricewise in the middle of the field.
I do wonder why though. Sony priced their GM 24 and 35 so reasonably that I doubt either Canon or Nikon can beat them at a similar performance envelop. $2200 seems like a mistake IMO cause we know for sure the Sony has to make more compromises somewhere next to the much bigger and heavier Canikon (more so on the Nikon case). This GM 50/1.2 ain't exactly small either. If it's at $2200, I'll wait for the inevitable massive price drop on the secondary market. I got my RF 50 for around $1700 (still high but more like it should be for that lens)

We should wait to know what lens elements were used before judging that. We don't know about flare performance, vignetting, AF speed etc. It is a tiny bit lighter than the f1.4 version, though and that alone is fantastic.

It appears to be about the same length as the Canon. So it's unlikely there are any significant compromises compared to the Canon, except maybe due to the smaller filter size of the Sony...

The Canon - while optically great - has pretty strong vignetting and cats eye bokeh wide open. Probably safe to assume the GM will be similar.
Personally I think vignetting is actually nice as long as it is gradual and not sudden black corners. Cats eyes can look nice with foliage, but can also be really distracting.. will be interesting to see the rendering of this lens.
But I‘m actually in the camp of „Sigma please make a 50/58mm f/1.4 for $1.000“. I think $2.000 is a bit too much for a fitfy..
