Pretty compelling prime trinity with an a1 or an a7r4 where you can punch in apsc for 36, 75 and 200mm options. I’ve been trying to figure out gapping and maybe that’s the ticket for AF primes.

Yea that size has me very interested if the IQ is there. Back in my Canon days my "holy trinity" for AF primes was the 24L, 50L, and 135L...I already have both excellent Sony GM's of those focal lengths (24 GM & 135 GM) and have been fiddling around with different 40-70mm options. This would have me set long-term, we'll see how the price comes in.

Did they use a man with giant hands for that photo as this f1.2 lens looks small?
It's interesting to see another smallish concave front element. As I've seen a lot of them lately. Of course the Sony 55/1.8 had it, but also the Batis 40 has a very similar looking concave curve. And again, the ZX1 has the smallest and most concave element of them all. I wonder if they all derive from similar optical design that has now been opened up for practical applications - a kind of collective learning where different manufacturers learn from each other...

Looks like the front element may be moving while focusing like on the RF lens. I have some concerns about that when it comes to focus speed and sealing.

Yep- have always had good luck with gapping using the doubling(ish) of focal lengths rule between AF primes, and the A7R4 helps with that for sure for my uses.

As someone who is 95% never going to buy a $2k lens this actually looks pretty dope anyway just assuming that some consistent IQ will be maintained and that SIZE.
When the RF 50 1.2 came out IIRC Canon hadn't started using dual focusing motors in their RF primes so in any event the GM will be more practical no matter what anyone thinks of the output image. It's kind of interesting to me that of all the latest 'Otus'-grade 50s that came out, Nikon has the best differentiation from Sony's lens due to what I'm assuming is going to be better correction for focus breathing—and the inclusion of dual AF motors also helps keep this lens relevant. Disregarding finer points of IQ from this thing, it's hard to see an outcome for this lens where the 50 1.2 GM isn't the most practical solution for high-speed 50s, however.
What interests me most about this lens from a pure observer standpoint however is the MFD. Is it going to be like the 35 GM and feature telescopic focus breathing (increasing its reproduction ratio) and is it going to be like the most recent G/GM series primes and offer 2cm extra MFD in manual focus? 40cm is already quite good for a 50. 38cm + telescopic focus breathing could put the reproduction ratio on this thing close to 1:3.

ZM 35/1.4, CV 35/1.7 and the CV 35/1.2iii as well. I have been watching this, asked about it, but still don’t quite understand what it does.

Sony 35/2.8 ZA and for APS-C the Sony 35/1.8 OSS have got concave front elements.

Thanks for the comparison. It still makes me wish it were f1.4 and tinier. Hopefully, Sigma will soon release a compact 50f1.4 DN, though I love Sony's designs.
My eyes might be deceiving me, but the proportions seem to be a bit off. The 35 to 50 is a 5mm thread difference, same as the 50 to the 85mm. It looks much larger in that photo. I'm holding my 100 STF and picturing a smaller version...same girth, maybe a bit lighter, minus one control ring and 15mm shorter. I like it. I'll get the 35/1.4 GM first, and if I get the 50/1.2 it's a few years away, but I love the option.
Looks like it'll be another very solid release. Nice work, Sony. I look forward to the reviews here!

Will be very interested to see what it really is and really weighs. Also would be nice to see a true objective head to head with the Canon RF 50/1.2L and then one comparing to the Planar 50mm f/1.4 ZA. Used to own the old EF 50mm f/1.2L, tried the Sigma 50/1.4 Art on Canon , now own the Planar 50/1.4 ZA and a 1/2 dozen other 50's over time so a fan of the focal length. Even have the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 Ai-S.
How will it turn out. Will it be the best 50mm for the Sony FE mount? Let's see.
