I played with it today. The trick is finding and angle where bright sun continues to hit the sensor the whole time your put your up to it. Basically make sure there is no shadow on the sensor until your eye is too close to see it. I could make it happen almost every time that way (again 10am sun angle). Based on this I think the longer eye cups we've all ordered will mostly if not completely resolve it

I don't bother with the eye sensor. I just programmed the Trash button to be my Viewfinder/Monitor switch when not in Playback mode.
That won't help you one bit with this issue. Surprisingly even if you disable the LCD monitor, the confused sensor will still refuse to enable the EVF.

Are you saying that even if you set the Select Finder/Monitor menu item to VF (Manual) or Monitor (Manual) and program a custom button to switch between Viewfinder and Monitor that the EVF eye sensor still tries to switch between VF and EVF? If so, that's definitely a bug that should be fixable in firmware.

Pretty much. The best you can do is have the sensor merely enable and disable the EVF instead of also disable / enable the monitor, but that still leaves you with a disabled EVF when the issue hits. Fought with this a lot on the A7R4.
This is quite a dated issue by now. I really have no idea why Sony doesn't provide a firmware workaround. Then again, they don't wana fix the star-eater either and that bug is much older.

I guess if you want it to be completely manual put a piece of electrical tape over the sensor to keep it tripped all the time and use the toggle mapped to a custom button

Using a strong flashlight on the EVF sensor of my A1 does not trip any automatic switching once I have chosen manual VF/EVF selection. So I'm not sure what bug you guys are describing...

If you do manual EVF/Monitor selection then the problem may not occur. I'll have to test that next time I'm out in the sun.
I would run that mode but I want to run my camera in pseudo DLSR mode and the switching needs to be in Auto for that to work.
DSLR mode basically means the Monitor is run in the "Monitor Off" setting. In that setting hitting Play or Menu wakes the monitor. Otherwise nothing wakes it. The EVF wakes and sleeps as per the EVF sensor. I do run a second Histogram display option for the Monitor so I can hit the Display key and get my LV image when I want to shoot low with the tilt screen.
If I was to do the VF/EVF manual selection then any time I would want my Monitor on for Playback or Menu I would have to hit an extra key to do the manual switch. I used to do that until someone showed me the DLSR mode.
Though what we are describing is not triggering an automatic switch. We are talking about the strong light source overwhelming the sensor and then supposedly it switches to a less effective sensor that then doesn't trigger the EVF to go on when we raise it to our eye.

Anyone else still waiting for the preorder? Any words on the next batch please?
I was on the phone with Sony Pro Support yesterday (for another reason) but I did ask what they had for an ETA on the next batch to arrive in the US. He told me they had no ETA at the moment.

FPS has nothing to do with AF but everything to do with speed. So 1/60 just like let’s say 1/250 would have different speeds. But whatever the maximum speed to get like 30 FPS is what it can do. But is that at 1/1000 shutter or faster or slower that I don’t know. That’s a test to see what shutter speed you need to accomplish 30 FPS. Manual is manual you set it at 1/250 it will not vary from that. If you have the camera in like A mode aperture priority than it will depend on light hitting the sensor
Bottom line though FPS is frames per second that’s on the body it self . But that all depends where you have your shutter speed . Obviously your not going to get 30 FPS at a 1/8 of a second. My bet it’s probably about 1/1000 but that’s a test that needs to be done.
Personally I never shot even 15fps in my life never mind 30 and honestly I probably never will. I shot sports for a time also. But our birders here that maybe a regular setting at 30 FOS. I’m old school we call that spray and pray.
I’ve never done that but for bird shooting it’s pretty normal. As well as some sports.

Thanks Guy! I mentioned AF only because with certain lenses only 20 FPS is possible. And according to my understanding, this is only valid for AF and not when the lenses are in MF.
I know that there is a dependency between FPS and shutter time. I'm thinking about generating short video sequences (of about 5 seconds) out of RAW images shot at 30 FPS. That's why I need to know the possible FPS at 1/60th (or 1/50th).
I had planned to do the test myself next week, but sadly my dealer informed me yesterday that they didn't get enough A1 and it will take a couple more weeks.
