p.38 #1 · Pre-Order Sony Alpha A1 (50MP, 30fps, 8K)
For past releases I think you'd be in the first wave. This one feels different for some reason based on a few comments from various sony reps

The A1 is the first camera body that I have pre-ordered.....I've owned several Sony bodies (and Nikon decades ago) but most have either been used or after-release new. I pre-ordered on release date, about 2 hours after BH made them available. Judging from past experiences, what would be a reasonable expectation of a ship date? I've tried calling BH all day and have a chat window going on 3 hours, so they are not much help right now.

So, is it pretty much a foregone conclusion that the A1 won't be released on March 4? Or are we still hoping?
Well all my Fedex shipments that were sitting in NY since Feb 19th started to move and made it to Canada for delivery tomorrow. So I guess one could cross fingers that if shipments get to various retailers this week they may be allowed to release on March 4th. However, it sounds like Sony has officially made March 9th the new release date even if some retailers (those closer to where the shipment is tied up) get them this week. Who knows. I'm just happy I have confirmation there is one with my name on it for next week given all the SPS drama.

I’m setting my expectations low, hopefully, the supply will be on par with the A9ii. I suspect everyone who has/had an a9, s3, or rIV are making the jump, probably not something Sony expected in regards to the demand.

Not by a long shot. S3 would mostly be video people, not meant for hybrid nor action. R4 would be everything but action. A9 would be everything but high-res. So I'm pretty sure the majority of shooters won't spring the money. If it weren't for BIF, I'd have kept my A7R4. Fast action is the only thing it isn't good at. And the A1 is twice the price. Observing gear forums provides a *very* biased impression...

If indeed, March 9th is a new date that Sony set for all US retailers, most likely they will have A1's in stock few days earlier but ship them out with March 9th delivery. Thinking of the A7SIII release last Fall, I got mine delivered exactly on the release day and my retailer wasn't allowed to sell it nor offer a pick up in the store even a day before. But this was a worldwide release. As far as I know, A1 is already being sold in Europe.
Simply put, there is a big possibility that A1 cameras will start arriving to US customers next week...

Which is bad because that will give Sony a reason to price the next version at $9500
It is not a secret that most Sony cameras before A1 were priced lower simply to help Sony gain the market share. Look how much good this move made for the industry. Unfortunately, many expected this trend to continue...
In my opinion, A1 is fairly priced as all other flagships cameras cost exactly as much, or even more and have less impressive/ancient specs. Will the next flagship camera cost more? I don’t think so, unless long awaited Canon R1 sets a new standard and breaks the $7000 barrier

It seems to me also that Canon priced the R5 on the low side to lure back folks that left Canon for greener pastures. Do we remember how expensive the Canon 1Ds, 1Ds Mark II and Mark III were between 2002 and 2008 or thereabouts? Just to refresh our memory, it was $7,995. Considering the inflation factor, I am guesstimating that it would be close to the range of $9,000 to $10,000. Judging by the prices of the RF lenses, it wouldn’t surprise me that Canon would price the R1 at approximately the same price level of those flagship cameras of yesteryear.

A post on DPR forums talking about the release date said that he was able to talk to someone at B&H yesterday. B&H still expected to get the cameras on March 4th but wouldn't be shipping till March 9th.
So if that info is true then it sounds like Sony moved the embargo to ship date to March 9th maybe just to give enough time for the cameras to get all over the country (and to Canada) in order to still have a coordinated release date for N.America.

I don’t quite understand why Sony has to put an embargo on the release of the camera in North America. The camera is already available in Europe and in Asia. I understand the embargo on releasing images a few weeks back since it was orchestrated globally. What gives, Sony? Of course, if this turns out to be the case...

Who knows. I wonder if they have agreements with certain larger stores to have a synchronized release date to protect the store reputations... like if BH got theirs before adorama or something other larger store that isn't in NYC.

Don’t know if this means anything. BH changed my status from “Back order” to “New order”.
Mine changed as well but it doesn’t mean anything. If they charge you credit card and the status changes to “shipped to warehouse” then it means it will shipped that day.

Ours is shipped - but it is a loaner from Sony for testing together with the 35 GM. My wife is supposed to make some social media stuff for Sony for the wedding base. Eager to try it out.
