I had pre-order the A1 two weeks ago just for its' high resolution, high frame rate and most importantly the bird eye focus function. But after I saw the Youtube episode of "Tony and Chelsea Northrup" comparison of Canon R5 and Sony A1(

), the bird eye focus function was not as good as I expected. I am a little disappointed, and wonder should I order it? Please give advice!

My advice is to pay no attention to those two.
Pay no attention to anyone else that uses words like 'shocking' in their titles.
Using the word 'shocking' is obvious sensationalism.

noun: sensationalism
1. (especially in journalism) the presentation of stories in a way that is intended to provoke public interest or excitement, at the expense of accuracy.

All they want is for you to click so they make money.

Do not let that one video sway you. Please review all these videos and come to a more well rounded conclusion. I own the R5, there is nothing I'm seeing in these videos that give me pause.

Just look at how fast the eye-af reacts to the bee-eater coming back to the perch with prey. That is quick. The R5 is also very quick. The R5 also gets confused a lot. The A1 will likely get confused in similar situations. Maybe the R5 will have a small edge. One A1 user on the A1 Facebook Group that has both A1 and R5 said he feels A1 is about 85% of the R5.

Videos if you haven't seen them yet:

We shouldn't forget that it is easier to upgrade performance with improved DL models via firmware upgrade. You can't upgrade a R5 to 120 AF calculations/s.

Being that you have both, have you come across the wingtips of BIF being distorted due to rolling shutter with the R5?

Not very often. Yes for hummingbirds but when they are hovering, feeding on a flower, you still get the straight forward and straight back wing positions not distorted which are usually the ones I keep anyways even with an A9 or DSLR that don't distort.

Now I have seen some fast take off duck shots where the wing flaps up fast and the duck is rising fast where I feel the outer part of the wing is not exactly how it should be...but sometimes I'm not sure if it is actually distorted or not. It is not really shot ruining.

For ducks just zipping by I don't see distortion with the R5 in the wings. Even fast Buffleheads and Hooded Mergansers.

However, what I do see for any panning shot is vertical lines leaning in the background. So any trees or grass or even their reflections in the water do lean and sort of ruin shots. That is where I find the slower read speed to be an issue. Much less so with wing distortion.

The other issue with the R5 for shooting BIF is that if you burst, then take your finger off the shutter and then plan to do a burst again in a second or two when the bird is closer you get a bit of a jarring experience in the EVF that can throw you off enough to miss that next burst (not always but sometimes).
This is because at 20FPS H+ ES and 12FPS H+ MS the R5 does a blackout free slideshow. At 20FPS ES it is actually fairly easy to track/pan a bird if you just keep the shutter hammered for the entire pass. The 20FPS slideshow is smooth enough and not delayed too much where it works. But anytime you stop shooting it drops you back into the true live feed and that is what can screw you up sometimes with faster pans/birds.

Now most of my R5 time has been spent on ducks because that is what I have in abundance during the winter. I've done some work on shorebirds IF like Dunlin and Black Turnstone. I've also done some Brewer's Blackbirds, Pigeons and Black Oystercatchers. The shorebirds and blackbirds are more difficult with the R5 vs A9II but still I've had some success. Pigeons and Oystercatchers were fairly easy.

My biggest challenge is swallows and that will begin first week of March in sufficient numbers to give a good test to the R5. I've been anxiously waiting for that test against the A9II. But now I will also have the A1 to throw in the mix. It is going to be fun!! I'm expecting more distortion issues with the swallows but also more issues with the EVF slideshow. We'll see...

Hmm I skimmed through the help guide and I see no mention of EFCS setting (like A7c)?

Hmm, I wonder if that is always on when using mechanical shutter?

This is in the notes: “ When you shoot at high shutter speeds with a large-aperture lens attached and [Mechanical Shutter] mode is selected, out-of-focus circles produced by the bokeh effect may get cut off due to the shutter mechanism.”

Yep, i think it's the same as in A7c, so no full mechanical shutter.
Also, no detailed info on when auto shutter switches between shutter types :/ .

Does anybody know (or could test) what the slowest shutter speed is that still allows 30 fps. Longer than 1/30 sec of course won't work. But would you still get 30 fps with 1/30 or 1/60 sec or do you need faster shutter speeds?

And has it been confirmed that you get 30 fps with (adapted or native) manual focus lenses?

Judging by this, the electronic shutter is meant to be used for high shutter speed:

"In the following situations, set the [Shutter Type] to [Auto] or [Electronic Shutter].
When shooting with a high-speed shutter in a bright environment such as outside in bright sunlight, the beach, or snowy mountains."

If that is the case, you'd only need the mechanical shutter for very fast motion, some flash shooting, and bulb.

EFCS issues still need to be tested, though.

Auto apparently uses electronic shutter for bursts and mechanical for single shots.

There is a bit more detail in the docu: https://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2040/v1/en/contents/TP0002924538.html

I cannot "confirm" anything but I can say what the official documentation says:

1) You need at least 1/125s for 30fps without AF-C, and 1/250s if you use AF-C.

In reality, you might need even more than that.

The only way you get 30fps with 1/30 or 1/60 is by shooting video. I guess you could 8k and then extract 37MP images in 16:9 format from that.

2) In manual focus, 30fps is achieved without any issue, but again you would still need at least 1/125 minimum shutter speed.
