Just finished watching the I Series announcement by Sigma's CEO. Interesting lenses.

The lenses have an all metal construction including the hood.

The lenses will come with two lens caps--a plastic one and a metal, magnetic one.

Availability has shifted a bit:
24mm--mid-January 2021
35mm--early January 2021
65mm--early January 2021

Focus mode switch is included.

Should be a popular set of lenses.

24mm F3.5 DG DN Contemporary - MSRP $549
35mm F2 DG DN Contemporary - MSRP $639
65mm F2 DG DN Contemporary - MSRP $699

So, samples look verrrrrrrrry good. Not as smooth as the 45, but uh damn.

Sony is gonna pull off a goddamn miracle to make me want the GM over the Sigma. This is gonna be the lens to put on an a7C. Just wish there was a better MFD.

I might finally get rid of my Loxia trio 21-35-50 which was always difficult to mount/unmount.

Hope this thing has amazing sun stars like the Loxia. It would be a shame if it doesn't.

Hmm... The bokeh balls doesn't seem extraordinary to me on this DPR picture taken with the 35 :

https://3.img-dpreview.com/files/p/sample_galleries/5770032666/3363287046.jpg

There is some outlining and structure inside... I'm not a bokeh specialist like some others here and could perfectly live with that, but is that the perfect rendering everyone was dreaming of ?

They were said to have Art level optical performance in a compact size with the new I designator and contemporary label. I notice a number of features that are found on the Art series that were not discussed here. Full weather sealing, programable functjon button(s),de-clickable aperture ring to name a few.

The new 105mm 2.8 macro was not listed as part of the new I series. It has the Art name not the contemporary name and does have those features. Similar high material and build quality and super high oltical quality. I wonder if this will be the difference between I contemporary and I Art.

So far none of the Sigmas have stabalization. I expect the 2.8 Art Zooms will need to have it.

So, we now have Signa, and Tamron making Sony E mount the focus of new development, in addition to Zeiss, Voigtlander, all the other minor brands and Sony itself. The variety and quality of lenses for Sony E mount is just amazing, and growing at a tremedious pace.

It looks to me that the one mount with open standards is paying off for Sony in a big way.

They better be good because specs wise these new Sigmas's offer nothing new. Looks are very nice, though

Sigma has understood that not everybody wants a bigger and better lens. Small to medium size prime high quality is often the way to go with mirrorless full frame.

I just wished we finally get the native 28mm/2. That is a never ending wait... Also a small size moderately bright 135-180mm mid price prime would be wellcome.

More limited, yes, but they've done a better job maintaining a consistency of quality across the S-line when compared to Sony's patchwork offerings (FE, G, ZA, GM).

I wouldn’t care about the marketing labels (alphabet and letter soup) from Sony, Nikon, Canon, Sigma etc at all. Look at focal length, aperture and price instead. That’s much less confusing than pure marketing label nonsense.

The new Sigma lenses fortunately come with rounded aperture blades, 24/3.5 (7 rounded blades), 35/2 and 65/2 (9 rounded blades).

The 35mm is an instant buy for me. The 24/3.5 would have to be better than my Loxia 25, which seems unlikely. But the macro ability is appealing.

Not in this video, but Jordan shows onion rings in dpreview video.

Yep, saw the other video now:

?t=214

That's not too bad if that's the worst case (seems better than SY35 but hard to tell without direct comparison) ...
I find the extreme cats eyes more distracting:

?t=100

Anyways, dpreview preferers the Sony offering and nobody talks about rendering ...

Looking at the reviews so far on the Sigma 35mm I'm not seeing anything that makes me want to run out and pre-order. Looks good but the Sony 35mm 1.8 looked good as well. Think I'll wait for some direct comparisons and the Sony 35mm GM. Come on Sony surprise us with a much more compact 1.4 than the Zeiss

So far, it doesn't seem to be the holy grail everyone expected but the Sonnar also has some onion rings to it AFAIR...
Personally, I think I like the samples from dpr (from panasonic no less) more than SY35...

Looking at more reviews it seems to be the best mid speed 35 by a slim margin which is pretty nice. Lack of complete sealing & better MFD stops it from being the clear winner. Looking forward to an Abbott review.

It also seems to have a bit of a glow wide open at MFD, at least judging by the baby pictures on dpr...

@j4nu Talking about this shot? Looks more like motion blur than glow to me. See how the light streaks in the full sized image.

EDIT: didn't see you said baby pics. looking now
