B&H has updated my pre-order (ordered right at 7a when pre-order opened) to Will begin shipping 2021-04-12. Anyone else have the same thing happen to theirs?

Just saw the exact same update to my order. Really concerned by this poor approach by Sony and their resellers to claim for two weeks its only a one week slip and then the Friday before the Monday shipping date to push it out two months.

Just shows that they are out of control. They may not have intended it but it really leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth that they really don't care about their end users. They should have made a true public announcement that of the issue and a fully disclosed the level of impact. The company I work is a major IP supplier to all the top electronics companies. If we did this to them they would call our CEO and demand an explanation.

Sony please explain and do it now.

I agree with you. There are way more important things going on in this world at the moment than me getting a new lens but Sony should've put out an official statement from the start addressing the issue and letting customers know when they can expect their lens.

I see this lens superior to the ART DN for weight/dimensions and central sharpness.
Nothing more.
I see also similar out of center resolving power, vignetting, flare resistance while bokeh, rendering, focus breathing and Chromatic Aberration are better in Sigma.
I do not consider Cameralabs (with all the due respect) as a bible as usually all new entries are there considered superior to existing lenses. I trust more in my eyes and samples I can download.
For what I’ve seen till now there is no advantage in this lens apart what considered above.
I would like to see more side to side real world comparisons

Different strokes I guess, or should I say in the eye of the beholder. The only advantage I see Sigma has right now it that it is available

Not to derail the topic too much, but how did you like your 1.8?
I'm in the market for my first 35 mm AF lens, and am debating whether to go for the GM or the 1.8.
Completely different beasts, I know, but what, to you, were the things that "bothered" you about the 1.8?

Unsolicited opinion -

The 35/1.8 is one of a good number of lenses in the system that a minority find wanting.

(28, 35/2.8, 35/1.8, 55/1.8, 24-70/4, 35/1.4 ZA, among others)

In fairness none of them are perfect but (and it's a big but) the truth is that if you are image-centric rather than opinion-centric you will find many thousands of lovely images from all of those lenses.

Amazing what some people can do with substandard gear !

Sure the GM has better IQ. That's how it should be given the substantial increase in size and price .

IMO that doesn't take from the 35/1.8. It's a great little lens that can support your effort to create memorable images.

I see you are very convinced of ambassadors's opinions.
Nevertheless you are very pleasant.

Wether the GM is better than Sigma 35/1.2 or not, and vice versa, is honestly irrelevant and getting pretty repetitive here. As I said earlier, some people will find Sigma rendering better, but most will gravitate towards Sony, especially when buying new. It has so many advantages (size, weight, price, brand, sharpness) that what little advantages Sigma has over GM are just not going to cut it for most people.

Sigma 35/1.2 is one of my favorite lenses and I am pretty happy with my two 35s combo (35/2.8 ZA is my other 35). My only regret is buying the Sigma a week before the GM announcement, and not after. I could have saved another $100. Oh well.

I am very excited about all new 35s (GM, Sigma 35/2 I and CV 35/2 APO). I might keep my current 35s and add APO to my collection or replace both of them with the GM or replace 35 ZA with 35 I. I am just waiting for the image threads to start, so i can make up my mind.

So many good options.

There are plenty of reviews that are not from "ambassador's". That said I don't rely on reviews. I cancelled my order for the GM when Sony delayed it. It was obvious in was a QC issue and was nothing related to COVID. It appears their addressing it so no real concern. I'll pick one up eventually. I have a CV 35mm1.2 which is a killer in such a small form factor, there are times I need/want AF though so that is where the GM will fit in. 35mm has always been my favorite and up until recently there had been some good options but not great ones. Now we have 5-6 great options that will fit different peoples needs. I think the Sigma 1.2, Sigma f2, CV 1.2, CV APO, GM, and even the Zeiss still fall into that category. If you can't find one in that bunch that doesn't get your juices flowing it's time for a new hobby Of those the GM ticks the most boxes for me though.

Thank you for the perspective!!
I may pick up a used 35/1.8 first just to see how I like the focal length and then upgrade to a used GM down the road.
I absolutely love my Voigtlander 40 1.2, but always wish it had AF when I'm shooting people that are moving. The 35 1.8 seems like a good solution to that.

Fully agreed. Just visit www.juzaphoto.com and dig into the Sony lenses section. First you may notice that the lenses have ratings that are quite different than the "common knowledge" here. Then, once you look at the photos, you'll pretty much like all the lenses.

How can that be?

Quite simple. People there are good photographers who post only their best photos with a specific lens. Where the lens is used to its full potential, consistent to its purpose and characteristics. And if you find juzaphoto to be too selective, you can always go to flickr groups where you can also find great images taken with about any lens.

Come back here and you'll find a lens trashing festival were people compete into taking the crappiest photos possible and then arguing forever which is worst, lens A or B. And when they can't find enough reasons to fully trash a lens, they will invent some too.

That's one of the reasons I remove the meta data when posting images. Too many people get hung up on the gear used and not just view the images for what they are. If asked, I'll pm details, but I want people to just view the image without any gear biases that are established here on FM.

Thanks for reminding me about that site.

I spent a lot of time there coming to terms with the Zeiss "Classic" series when I purchased mine.

Definitely a resource worth keeping in mind.

As I commented in a private PM I had with someone asking me about selling my 35/1.8 and getting the new GM I told him it was not about what the 35/1.8 could not due but more about the size, weight, speed, and ergos of the GM. If your using other GM lenses that fact that it has features like the other, i.e. aperture ring, etc. for me was reason enough. Now all my primes on the Sony FE mount have aperture rings. I'm sure some would call me old school but I like the fact that all my lenses now are similar. Also in other ways it is similar. I had both the 35/1.8 and the 35/1.4 ZA and never warmed up to the f/1.8, that is just me so now that I will eventually have a lens that is smaller than the other f/1.4 and looks (image wise) like the other lenses in my kit I am good with that.

FWIW -

My comment wasn't directed at you; not even obliquely.

I understand your rationale. Makes perfect sense and you never criticised the 1.8 in the process.

You were just stating your preferences; something we are all allowed to have.

In fact I will have to face the same decision when my own 35 GM comes in at some point......

I was just trying to assure TrojanSD (and anyone else listening) that there is a lot of potential in all of them.

Best -

Agreed. Every lens I've ever owned had more potential for great images than I could ever coach out of it. The student is capable but the teacher is lacking

I think we have a lot of resources on this forum for everyone to make up their mind on what they like.
This thread is not that old and shows the differences and similarities between various 35mms nicely:
