p.63 #1 · Pre-order: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)

I ordered mine from B&H and on my order it is still claiming 22-Feb-21 as the target ship date. I was in no rush but now that I have sold both my 35mm (f/1.8 and f/1.4) I admit I would like that to be the actual ship date.
Will just have to wait, sit tight, and see. The things that make me feel that later in February is more likely than April is that some have already received it in Europe. That and the fact that B&H only pushed out their data, posted on their website, by a week.

I'm with you. I sold my 50 1.4 and 24 1.4 thinking I'd have the 35 by the 15th. Not the end of the world with everything going on but it would be nice for either Sony or B&H to give an update.

Adorama's site now says:

This item is currently back-ordered by the manufacturer. Although we have no estimated time of arrival you can order it now and it will ship as soon it arrives.

Two more pics... I post them here because they don't really belong to the image thread, as they are cheap improvised shots. But they're still interesting.

For the last 40 years I've never seen any seal in this area, so it was quite a surprise; and of course I only had the 35 GM on me... you know the drill, you can't get too close as you don't want to disturb your subject, so it ends with heavy cropping ;-) The first photo is cropped from 42mp to 28mp, the second one from 42 to 21mp... and sharpness is still pretty good - although the subject was moving (faster than you might think !) and was shot wide open at f/1.4. Also a nice test for subject isolation at medium distance while moving; I like how the lens behaves here, it's responsive and accurate. Nothing revolutionary, but it gets the job done...

Thanks ;-) You're right, lighting in the second one is nice (the first one is kind of messy because I couldn't avoid other people's shadow)

Not to derail the topic too much, but how did you like your 1.8?
I'm in the market for my first 35 mm AF lens, and am debating whether to go for the GM or the 1.8.
Completely different beasts, I know, but what, to you, were the things that "bothered" you about the 1.8?

Well documented elsewhere but in short:

Pros:
-very sharp centrally and even decent in the corners
-very fast to focus and keep focus
-small and light
-good MFD
-excellent for video (AF/focus breathing)

Cons:
-Nissin bokeh at mid distances (‘busy’ bokeh)
-CA unavoidable in many cases, one of the poorer performers in difficult lighting situations
-rendering considered by some to be uninspiring (clinical and without character - subjective). For documentary work this is actually ideal, but to each their own.

I just sold mine in favor of the GM. And I got a lot of great shots out of the FE35. But if I were to buy in that range again with AF, I think the new Sigma 35 f/2 has eclipsed it in rendering (and build).

Still waiting on the GM which, even in the country of production, has been delayed without an announced timetable for release.

Same here, my B&H order when I log in still says " New Item - Coming Soon, Will begin shipping 2021-02-22". I ordered a minute after they opened up ordering. I'm taking it with a grain of salt at this point. Hey, I've had a Sony Tough 128GB SD card on order since January 3rd and they're now saying early March. And we wait.

First, I wasn't bothered by the Sony 35mm f/1.8. Owning the FE 55mm f/1.8 it was very familiar in size, weight, and ergonomics to that lens and when I first bought into Sony I thought I wanted all my gear to be that size. Over time and as Sony became my main system I adjusted to feel and function of the larger faster lenses in the GM family. These had aperture rings which I like and being a little older enjoyed a lot. Also the new GM was sufficiently smaller than the prior f/1.4 ZA which I also owned. Additionally for me having a family of lenses, that felt and acted the same, has always been important to me. It just is. So with the 20/1.8 G, 24/1.8 GM, the new 35/1.4 GM, 85/1.4 GM, and/1.8 GM all having similar design features and feel it was a no brainer for me. So I bought the GM more for what it was than for what the f/1.8 was not.

Don't know if that helps but that was my reasoning. Also moving back to having only one lens than having to decide al the time time between taking the f/1.4 or f/1.8 helped. I did have to sell both though to pay for the new GM.

'certainly on par with the Sigma 35 f/1.2'

Much better. see Cameralabs review title:

It sounds like a near-perfect lens, really. Since I was never going to buy or carry a 1100g 35mm, the fact that the 35 GM is able to, according to Camera Labs, deliver "superior results not only to the earlier 1.4 Zeiss version, but also more recent rivals including Sigma’s 35mm 1.2 DG DN." and that, in terms of performance, "details toward the centre are bitingly crisp, while the rendering of blurred areas is satisfyingly smooth with minimal outlining or textures in bokeh blobs. There’s little to no fringing, and the geometry is well-behaved even without compensation" and it does that all at 525gs and for $100 less?

I'd say 'sign me up', but I think that I'll be looking at 'backordered' for quite some time. More time to save my pennies, I guess.

It surprised me, since the big Sigma gained all the accolades. Gordon does it well, a no nonsense presentation. Leaving aside the 135mm and some say the 24mm, this one might actually be 'peak Sony'. Out of focus content might be (might) a little contrasty for purists, but probably scene and weather-dependent, looking at the above images.

I see this lens superior to the ART DN for weight/dimensions and central sharpness.
Nothing more.
I see also similar out of center resolving power, vignetting, flare resistance while bokeh, rendering, focus breathing and Chromatic Aberration are better in Sigma.
I do not consider Cameralabs (with all the due respect) as a bible as usually all new entries are there considered superior to existing lenses. I trust more in my eyes and samples I can download.
For what I’ve seen till now there is no advantage in this lens apart what considered above.
I would like to see more side to side real world comparisons to possibly change my mind.
FYI, I’m in process to change my current 35mm lens.

B&H has updated my pre-order (ordered right at 7a when pre-order opened) to Will begin shipping 2021-04-12. Anyone else have the same thing happen to theirs?
