p.2 #2 · Pre-order: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)
Hmm, interesting I was expecting 40 or 50 GM more for some reason...
Well, the Sigma monster can still be upped:
* resolution-wise, look at the Tamron, which seems a tad sharper across the frame
* rendering-wise, look 24 GM which I think I very slightly prefer in the way it renders
* size-wise, obviously.
Now, the question is can Sony combine these (as Sigma will remain the low-light and blur king at f1.2) ...

I imagine a 50mm would be next in the pipeline if they're finally updating all their Zeiss stuff to GM. If this comes out by spring I'd bet a 50mm would be out no later than the following spring. Only question is if they keep it compact like the 24 and 135 (relatively speaking) or if they go f1.2 and make a statement lens (which would also allow them to keep the 50/1.4 ZA active)

I have been hoping Sony would make this lens for a long time. I expect it to be a lot like the 24 GM. Price wise it probably has to be similar to the 24 GM as they can't really go above (or much above) the Sigma 35 f/1.2. So, let's say a $1,400 or $1,500 price tag, and to compete with the Sigma I think it is most they will keep it smaller (I am thinking 600g or less) and have try to come close in IQ perhaps giving up a little resolution for nicer out of focus rendering. I think it would be great for the Sony system to have two great fast 35s, a 35 f/1.4 GM that is smaller with great rendering and the Sigma 35 f/1.2 with the extra wide aperture and excellent IQ but big.
I think they might reverse the decision at 50mm. They could add a 50 f/1.2 GM that could be big with optimum IQ to keep up with the competition from Canon and Nikon, but still offer the smaller very nice ZA 50 f/1.4. Having both f/1.2 and f/1.4 very nice options would be a feather in Sony's cap. Of course they still need an 85 f/1.2 to keep up with the competition, but personally I would be a lot less worried about that fast of an aperture at 85. Perhaps other people would be, but the new Sigma 85 f/1.4 DG/DN and the Sony 85 f/1.4 GM already make an excellent pair of lenses at 85mm.

Exactly the lens I have been looking for. If it is anything like the 24GM for rendering and weight/form factor, I will be buying it immediately upon release. I really love what the Sigma produces but I'd prefer something similar in a smaller package. This seems to fit the bill. Hoping it does, when we know the details.

It is slightly confusing that this isn't a 1.2 given the competition and pricing potential for a 1.4 GM. Where is this 35 1.4 GM going to fall when the Sigma 35 1.4 Art regularly outperforms the Zeiss 35 1.4 at about half the price?
I would find it hard to give this lens a solid look if it's priced in the Sigma's range. Sony must have something really special up their sleeves.
p.2 #9 · Pre-order: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)
Well the difference in weight is huge between a 1.4 and a 1.2 lens. Look at the 1.2 50mm in canon rf or nikon... They are monsters like the sigma 35 1.2...
It make sense to have a really high quality but still usable 1.4 lens.
Don't forget that the quality of the blur and the light transmission do not totally depend on the aperture: the sigma 1.2 is around T/1.6 1.8 and the sigma 45mm 2.8 has a beautiful bokeh even if it is only 2.8...
p.2 #10 · Pre-order: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)
Hmmm... well, apart from the weight the other things I'm most curious about are the MFD & reproduction ratio. Perhaps I'm just a bit spoiled by my 40 CF, but being able to get good closeups is so nice. I think the 35 will actually have a pretty good MFD, as this has been a trend with all Sony lenses (with the possible exception of the super teles—just can't remember) since the 24-105 G... I think. Wonder if it'll match the 1.8, which would be a first for a 1.4 lens IIRC.

Exciting news. I’m glad it’s not f/1.2 and I’m hoping like others have said that it’s similar in size and rendering as my 24GM. If it is it’s an instant buy for me

I assume Sigma did the best possible job on its 35 1.2.
Results are beautiful rendering and optical performances.
The price to pay are weight and dimensions. In this regard my personal feeling is that when/if a lens is well done and well balanced these factors are easily forgotten. And this Sigma is in this league.
I think no top manufacturer can come in the market today with less performance than another, at least on professional fixed focal lenses like this new GM will be.
The fact to produce a 1.4 instead of a 1.2 is already a bad sign in my mind and surpass the Sigma performances is quite a challange in my mind.
Let's see what happens keeping fingers crossed.

The 24/1.4 GM wide open is outstanding for a 24mm lens but perhaps Sony could do even better at 35mm. As long as it does not compromise rendering, I'm all for it.
I'll let you gents have any kind of rendering you want on this one. Cause after some more thinking about it, the existing 35mm choices are already offering me about everything I'd want. I'll move into the 50mm speculation threads cause there's where it hurts for me. Neither the "bokehlicious" nor the "small and sharp" categories are well covered at this time.

That's exactly the lens that I was hoping Sony would upgrade when I red that they were working on new versions of their lenses.
I do hope as well that they will take rendering into consideration, like on the 24 and the 85. But even if they go for a more clinical rendering, as long as it's sharper, with less variation and CA than the Zeiss, and with a state of the art AF motor(s), I know that I will buy it anyway. And we all know that it's going to be. So it may be the first lens that I will preorder before release.

Exciting! I wonder if they will take some of the flare coating magic from the 12-24 GM and apply it to this 35mm. That's where the sigma 35 1.2 is poor at. It's my main event lens but not for landscapes (unless no sun in the frame). Will have to wait and see how it compares. Going to be hard to surpass the sigmas performance. The 1.2 is an absolute beast and has gorgeous rendering; love it.

Yes, the 12-24/2.8 GM has remarkable flare resistance (better than many primes). Sunstar rendering is also improved over the previous GM lenses. I'm hoping this is all transplanted to this new 35mm.

My prediction of FE 35mm f/1.4 GM:
- 2 * XA and 2 * Super ED
- good balance of size, weight, and optical performance
- below 700g
- XD motor
- same design language as 24 GM and 85 GM
- price: US $1799
