Without knowing the details, I don't think this is really fair. COVID has affected many industries across the globe. We're talking about a lens here, not a vaccine. I think we can exercise patience.
What is "unfair" about what I said? I'm curious? Yes COVID is everyone's free pass in 2020/21. Sony is no different than anyone else. Except this didn't sneak up on them. We have been dealing with this for almost a year. They announced the lens in Jan of 21. Supplies would have already been sourced at that point when they said the release date, that's part of how you determine a release date. You don't go give people a release date and then go try to source parts for what ever it is your making. Heck the lens would have most likely even been in production when they announced it. So for people to think supply side is the reason they are moving the date back doesn't hold water. It's just an excuse. Now if Sony said they can't fulfill initial demand because of supply chain issues, I could buy that. But that is not what they said. That also would not prevent them from selling the lenses that they did already make, would it? Look I love my self some Sony but I'm not so much of a fanboy that I can't call them out when they screw up. We all screw up. It's not like I'm telling anyone to sell there stuff and buy Canon. I still want this lens and I'll wait. But this "production" issue was not supply side related it had to be more QC related. We will see soon enough. Because like I said there are lenses on the way to dealers as we speak. If Sony doesn't release them than that will confirm the QC concern. Otherwise why wouldn't Sony sell the "good" ones in the pipeline.

I felt it was unfair of you to say it's a failure because the reasons could relate to COVID, which is affecting everyone and everything.
It's not a free pass. People are dying. It's a big deal.
Just that reason alone that it could be COVID-related should warrant some patience and understanding.
I get it, some people have already put their money down on the lens. It's frustrating.

Calling it like I see it has nothing to do with "frustration" . I cancelled my order and will purchase it in the future no big deal. It's just a lens. That doesn't change the fact this is a QC issue .Sony would have been better served in my opinion to just say something like " hey we found and unacceptable amount of lenses that had internal dust in them" for example. We would be applauding them for doing that right! Instead being purposely vague leads to speculation which leads us here

Petapixel tells us the GM 35 F1.4 was "likely" due to ship from Sony to retailers/distributors on February 12, 2021 and then shipped to customers on February 22, 2021.
If this information is accurate, there is no existing "pipeline" of GM 35 F1.4's to go to customers.
"To clarify, the February 12 date provided here is likely the date Sony set to start shipping the lens to dealers. Adorama currently lists the lens as slated to begin shipping starting February 22, which would follow that timeline. As such, it appears likely that this date will also not be met and is the original estimation for shipping the lens to customers before this announced delay.
In the last year, delays have become more common as the world reeled from the proliferation of the COVID-19 coronavirus, but seeing a delay for a lens that has already been through a review cycle just days from release with no indication of a timeline is highly unusual.
**Sony was reached for comment but was unable to provide an update or further details ahead of publication."

Sorry, but that is your opinion. It is possible, but you can't say it with this certainty.

Multiple commenters in SAR reporting it was a bad batch, with one citing a message they got from a Sony account manager in Germany: “The reason for the delay is a manufacturing defect in one batch of the new lens, which can lead to this front decorative ring becoming detached.” Does not affect optics but QC related nonetheless. Some saying a month delay. Another comment: “ They told me that I can have a lens right now with the risk of having to repair it.” So for whatever batch that may end up being, probably best to just wait anyway.

It does indeed appear to be a QC issue. It is reported the front ring of the lens is falling off. Since the lens hood can reverse mount and will rest against this ring, this can certainly be a issue down the line as the ring will be having pressure applied against it, for example, when being carried in your camera bag.

Never thought I would consider a comment from SAR comments section as a reliable source of anything other than mayhem...ha ha, but I guess it can be no worse than the rumors SAR posts and this info about the potential of a front ring defect, sounds at least plausible.

Of course it is my opinion. Sorry I thought that would be obvious. Just like when a Company postpones a release for a product a week before launch. You realize the lens a week before launch would already have been made and would be in transport to destinations around the globe. So that eliminates the possibility of the postponement being from supply chain issues. So yes I'm very confident in my opinion. This has nothing to do with COVID.

If that were indeed the case, I will happily acknowledge that.
I just would like people to wait in judgement until such details are really confirmed instead of being sure from the beginning already.

This was posted in an email to a suppler from a Sony manager in Germany. So it certainly seems legitimate.
Ok. Sound indeed to be some problem. However, it seems speculation about optics and AF motor are then misleading, as this refers not to the internals of the lens.

It looks like your opinion was spot on regarding a quality issue!

I am in agreement, this is not confirmed based on an SAR comment but seems plausible based on the specific response given and email cited. Would be better if Sony addressed it directly rather than having to hear of it this way, no? I would rather they just clear up the confusion and put it to rest. Otherwise we have threads like these explode with speculation. People cancelling orders etc. I feel like it would benefit Sony to be more up front about it and manage expectations.

Reading with interest. It sounds like Sony's small quality issue created more of a logistical problem. i.e. which batches of lenses have this issue and who has them or were are they headed if not arrived yet and still in shipping
Both B&H and Adorama is saying a delay from 15-Feb to 22-Feb. Not really sufficient time to replace products already on route or arriving soon. So they may just be waiting on a replacement shipment that is probably getting expedited. Just an opinion.

Someone in sonyalpharumors comment mentioned that his dealer said to him that production issue is related with loosening decroation ring(which contains lens's name and filter mm, mfd) in front of lens and one users from Korea community identified this by saying that when he pushed the decoration ring, it was pushed to inside by small margin and after that incident it was stuck for sure and didn't moved. Korea shipped 35GM in Feb. 03 and many of users got their hands on 35GM. Many of them tested with their decoration ring and at the moment he was the only one that had this problem with it.

Well, as expected I just got my copy in the mail. So far, it seems perfectly fine. Built like a tank, as a GM lens should be. No problem with the decoration ring. I'm anything but a reviewer, but I'll let you know if anything wrong comes up...
