Having been in the IT business, it is no secret that undisclosed bugs are fixed with software updates. I have no idea if Canon does this or not, but I usually keep all my stuff updated to the latest... Unless my whatever is a few years old and stable. Newer stuff like this R5 I will update almost right away regardless of the added features. Just me.

I usually do update after the beta testers report back on any new "bugs" or issues, but this time around there was nothing of interest to me. From all reports so far, this strange random lock-up issue that some people are having still hasn't been fixed. Other than the 3 or 4 that I've had in the past 12+ months, which is no big concern to me, I'm not aware of any other problems that need to be fixed. What I and many others want are improvements in the FW updates that apply to the stills shooters and not just the video kids.

I was so stoked to think that maybe this was the problem but it isn't. Any other ideas?

Which EF 600?

Other thoughts, reach out to canon customer service. Tell them your R5 keeps freezing when you go out to use it. Tell them the combo. They may want you to send in both the adapter and the camera.

Darn…

Okay, next question:

What card are you using? Cfexpress, SD? And, what brand?

Have you tried using a different card and type of card?

Turn off everything in the camera. It should be in airplane mode and doing no lens correction (you must go into the menu further and then turn off CA removal). None of these things apply to RAW files anyway.

Dear Andrew,
Thanks for trying to help. Pretty much everything is turned off except for enable highlights and i have customized my buttons for eye detect and large zone AF.
I did have airplane mode off so I will turn it on and see if that makes a difference. One change at a time to see if something works!

Dear Chimping,
I have Sandisk 512 Gb and ProGrade Digital CF and SD cards. I think the freezing happens with both cards but I will check it out over the week-end,
Gail

Thank you, Gail. Please keep us updated.

Please try all the cards separately, and please also make a note of how hot the cards feel once/if the lock up occurs.

Thank you Andrew J. I turned on the airplane mode as you suggested and so far I have had 3 days of shooting with no freeze-ups. Fingers crossed that this solves my problem.

Had two lockups yesterday with EF 600 f/4 IS III on the R5. Card in camera was Sandisk 512GB CFexpress card. IS was ON and in Mode 1.

They happened within a minute of each other. Both times all I was doing was looking through the EVF with Eye-AF engaged on a perched KF waiting to start firing if he dove. EVF image froze, after maybe 20-30s camera did the "clunk" and reset itself. Didn't have to pull the battery, just wait long enough. Weird that for the rest of the day it never happened again and it never happened the first day. We shall see what Day 3 brings.

The lock ups still happen every other shoot for me, mostly with IS on the lens. The choice of lens didn't really matter but found the 400 DO II to be the worst of the bunch.

I sure wish Canon could get to the bottom of these lockout issues and actually FIX it! Is Canon the new Windows 98? Still waiting to pull the trigger on an R5. I keep hoping the firmware releases address the lock ups, but it doesn’t appear that way.
Are the last couple of posters reporting lock ups using FW 1.4.0 that was just released this past week?

I am most unhappy to report that my R5 froze again after 3 days of no issues. Had IS on, mode 1 with eye AF engaged and I was looking through the EVF in ES mode waiting for a bird to take off. I took about 3 images(bird had pooped and I was sure he was going to take off) so started to spray and pray and the camera froze. Waited 40 seconds and the clunk occurred and all was well again. So frustrating.
So it looks like enabling the airplane mode did not solve my issue.
I spoke with Canon CPS and the message from the technician was that since my circuit board was replaced it could not possibly freeze. When I replied that I am still experiencing the problem, I was told it was my CF card. Explained that I have issue with both ProGrade and Sandisk the response was that i should send it in again.
I really don't think they are able to fix the problem and really don't want to be without the camera for another 2 weeks.

Strange how some are locking up and some are not. Mine locked up early on and I believe it was my Sandisk Card 128gb. I never got lock ups with my Sony cards. Maybe a combo of settings. Even now my Sandisk cards work fine, I thought a firmware corrected the issue but looks like there is still an issue.

Is anybody experiencing lockups with RF lenses? Maybe the common denominator is the EF-RF adaptor?

I personally have had no locks ups with any of the RF lenses, mainly the 400 f2.8 and 100-500mm are used.

My recent report was on 1.3.1 I used 1.4 today and had no lockups. But I also shot for 8hrs straight on Friday and had no lockups on 1.3.1

I think Sandisk cards may be part of the issue but who knows. I had a lockup or two with my own R5 using Transcend CFExpress card. And my lockups with my own R5 were with the 100-500 RF. I had lockups with Pius' R5 and adapted 400DOII with Sandisk card.

I had one or two last year with my RF 100-500.
