I took a picture of an eagle in a tree with the R5 in crop mode. I switched to full frame and started to take the same shot. Suddenly the eagle is frozen in the viewfinder with the white focus point on his eye. The viewfinder goes dark and then I hear two soft clunks and the camera is working. I focus back on the eagle and the viewfinder freezes again with the white focus point on the eagle's eye. The viewfinder then goes dark and I hear two soft clunks. The camera is then working again. This time I am able to take the shot and the camera hasn't froze since. All this happened in 51 seconds.
Just about all my camera freezes have been while taking pictures in Florida. I put the camera to my face after the freezes and the camera was very hot on the side and back.
I feel with the latest firmware that the time that the camera is frozen before it resets has been greatly reduced and the two loud clunks have become two soft clunks.

I was in Africa and it was quite warm out (compared to my normal CO mountain temps) and I was surprised at how hot my R5 got. I even got the hot warning light. I only shoot stills. A lady with the R6 did not have hot issues. She was going to upgrade to the R5 until she felt how hot my R5 was…..it also froze up once, but once in 9,000 shots is not unmanageable I guess.
I've had 12 lockups/freezes in 40,000 shots. When these started I would just turn the camera off then back on and everything would be ok. Later I would try to see if I could notice anything going on with the camera and after 30 to 45 seconds I would hear two loud clunks and the camera would reset and start working again. I never had to remove the battery.
These last lockups happened when I was just trying to focus.
I use a canon 100-400 II about 95% of the time. I could hear the lens IS and IBIS running during the lockups.
This issue is beginning to wear on me. I’ve had one lockup where I received an error message on the screen (can’t remember exactly which) which required pulling the battery. But I’ve had dozens of instances where the camera suddenly resets itself, as if the power button had been briefly switched from on to off, and back to on.
I had been just dealing with it but now when it happens with the Tamron 35 SP mounted to the Canon adapter, I lose AF capability until I reset the power manually *and* re-mount the lens.
This happens with SanDisk, Sony & Prograde cards, RF lenses and/or the Canon adapter.
I really hope this is addressed in the upcoming firmware.
First time had the lockup issue after having owned and used the R5 for about 15 months. Outside temperature was about 25° F, I had RF 600mm f4 and RF 2x on the camera. Camera just froze up, there was no error message. Turning the camera on and off didn’t fix it but taking the battery out and putting it back in worked.
