I sure wish Canon could get to the bottom of these lockout issues and actually FIX it! Is Canon the new Windows 98? Still waiting to pull the trigger on an R5. I keep hoping the firmware releases address the lock ups, but it doesn’t appear that way.
Are the last couple of posters reporting lock ups using FW 1.4.0 that was just released this past week?
Don't be to hard on Canon I have had the Sony a1 lock up twice now, the only difference is the the R5 gives you a photo to look at most of the time With respect to the a1, you just look through the viewfinder nothing happens. Will not focus and no focus points active. several other photographers were using the a1 and reported similar lockups today also. While the grass is greener in some areas... somethings don't change.. I just wanted to add everything with respect to my a1 is Sony, battery-grip, Sony batteries, Sony lens and Sony CFe cards and the only thing not canon about my R5 was Sandisk CFe Card 512GB.
I've had many lockups with Sony cards and don't own Sandisk. Putting either of my cameras in 1.6x crop mode gives almost instant lockups. I still have many days in a row with none. Every instance looks to me like a CPU at 100% and you have to wait for it to catch up. Which is why I turn off all extras in the camera.

I expect some glitches in these new cameras, that's why I never get upset/frustrated when my camera locks up, mostly just pull the battery and reboot...
I have been having terrible hard crashes on this camera for a while now. Always and only when I'm using Canon Camera Connect. It's happened on an Android tablet (Samsung Tab S7) and an iPad Pro 5th gen. I've not had it happen on my Samsung phone or an old iPad mini, thankfully. I use this feature of the camera almost every day in my job as a portrait photographer.
I only shoot with RF lenses as I saw other people thought it might relate to an adapter with EF lenses.
The camera will restart often enough that I am unable to use the feature with those listed devices and have to use the other/smaller ones.
Also, I've regularly experienced a dreaded "Err 70" crash with requirement to remove the battery.
I've lost no images thankfully but still unacceptable.
Updated to Firmware 1.4.0 hoping it might be a bug fix there but no improvement whatsoever.
I'm going to send the camera to Canon along with a video showing the failure.
I am concerned after hearing from other forum posters that they may replace the motherboard but still not be able to get the camera to work correctly! Ugh!
If I experienced lock-ups every time I used the camera or even twice per month, I'd be pretty pissed.
As it is, over 1 year later, I've had about 4 lock-ups which is well within my "pissed-off" threshold.
R5 + nothing but adapted EF glass + TC's + Sandisk 128 CFe + Sandisk 64 SD
Shooting both MS and ES
Used all FW updates except for the previous 1.3 version and now on 1.4
Ambient temps anywhere from -7deg C to 38deg C
Humidity usually around 100%
Wind usually out of the south/southwest
Sun from behind and or sides (thank god I don't shoot an A1)
Elevations anywhere from 0.0 upto 6,500 ft

Doesn't inspire confidence. Never had my Sony's ever lock-up or any previous Canon DSLR.
it it only the R5, does R6 have this affliction too?
Well, it seems mostly to happen in Electronic Shutter, and not too many people use electronic shutter on the R6 since it’s rolling shutter is slower than the R5.
Regardless, I’ve been using the R5 for over a year and never had a lockup of any kind, so your mileage will definitely vary.
It seems most likely that you will experience some kind of lockup potentially if you are shooting electronic shutter with eye af with EF lenses. While arbitrage experienced some on the 100-500, that may have been some other issue, or fixed by firmware, etc.
Not every user experiences lockups, and many that did had their issue resolved by either swapping CFExpress cards or sending to Canon to have the circuit board replaced. Some have had worse luck.
Yesterday I was chatting with three R5 shooters at the local lagoon. One guy was having lockup issues and he was using adapted 100-400II as his main lens. The other two ladies were using RF 100-500s and reported they'd never had a lockup and I explained what they were. We were discussing that some think it is only with adapted lenses or at least more common with adapted lenses.
Ironically about 20mins later one of the ladies who had never had one, had one right there beside me. And that was with the RF 100-500.
I also had one lockup with the 100-500 but the rest of mine were with adapted lenses.

So once you described it to her she was able to notice it was happening.
I know some people are still getting them, but I haven't had a lockup on either camera since firmware 1.3, which was a few months ago. (Before that I only had a couple).
I also had had no lockups since the 1.3.0 update but now after the 1.4.0 update have had two with different symptoms. After restarting all settings iso shutter speed and F stop had changed. frustrating as I thought I was clear of it. On the plus side initial focus is more steady with the 100-500 lens.
Bought my R5 last April. Mostly I use ef lenses with it. My camera has locked up about 10 times. Pictures lost during lockup. Always in H+ mode when it happens. I get the dreaded err:70 code. Could not replicate the exact circumstances, but what was common was holding the shutter down and getting about 20 frames before it would lockup. Sometimes it wouldn’t do it at all, then 3X in a row. Using Sony CF express card. Also happened with the SD. The camera was sent to CPS for repairs, and I should have it back to tomorrow. Keeping fingers crossed. I’d hate for this to be a $4000.00 camera that can’t be repaired. Hopefully Canon won’t let that happen. I will report back.
Been happening every once in a while lately ..was out today, camera just shuts off again while shooting . I remove and install battery and starts working again, R5 with 600mm lll and Sony Express card..
I’ve had it before as I mentioned it before it seems random, had it photographing snow leopards at the zoo
I’ve just got back from a trip to the Masai Mara and didn’t have the problem at all and I took a lot of shots which was great as I was worried about possibly loosing shots
The only issue that I had was when I didn’t have the 2 x TC fitted to the lens properly and the camera wouldn’t work but that was my fault for not checking that the converter had engaged with the lens properly

Hi,
I was out photographing birds this morning and while using the eye focus on a moving bird the R5 locked up, means nothing worked no focus or any buttons working. I turned off and restarted the camera and it became active again. This is the second time this has happened both on eye focus. Any ideas or has anyone experienced the same thing? I will ring canon and see if they know anything.
Thanks, Premnath
This happened to me yesterday, unrelated to eye focus, so far as I could tell.
