Same day, an hour later - even at this exposure time on a sunny day, you can see the size of the waves that were beating the coast at the time.

So I finally got to use my new (to me) R5 and 100-400ii this afternoon. I'm a nikon shooter but like to try other equipment from time to time. I actually owned an R6 and RF100-500 for a while but didn't warm to it and sold them...But after today, I'm not letting the R5 go so quickly....

I went into our yard this afternoon to shoot some birds. All we had were small fast movers so I guess the first test was one of the tougher ones possible. Light conditions weren't great either so I got to see how the R5 is at higher iso's as well.

As a nikon guy, I have to say I'm impressed. The shutter (mechanical) is quiet, and the focus system for the most part is really terrific. Used eye af only a bit but when it engaged it seemed to stick fairly well. Group af will be my default and it works really well. There were a few times when the af wouldn't lock (again, small targets in variable light), I'll just have to work through those times (possibly by using the focus ring to get the af 'on the right track').

Here are a few from the day, I won't bore you with my normal test shots. The 100-400 seems pretty terrific as well, definitely better than my nikon 80-400. Also to my eye much better than the rf 100-500 which seems way overpriced to me. While I still prefer some things about nikon ergonomics, I can certainly see why this camera is so sought after. Clearly the best all around camera on the market now (used to be the D850). I definitely prefer the nikon selection of glass so for now my d850 will still be my primary for wildlife, but we'll see how the two systems develop over the course of the year.

Eye af works!

Smart camera, focused on the jay...

The hummingbird shots were taken at about iso 4000...cleaned up well.

No R5 pictures but there is an R5 in the pictures . I installed a Kessler quick release to the bottom of the cargo rack in the Jeep which I also installed to hold chairs, tripods etc. The Kessler quick release works great because you can slide the lens plate into it and it will stay there until locked down. I also installed a rubber bumper to absorb any movement at the lens hood, this I may trim a bit. If it works like I hope I will install another one for Amy's camera too. I would not do any crazy off roading with this as it maybe to much bounce but normal road driving I think will work great. Time will tell. I also installed a cargo light bar for those early mornings or late nights.

^^
That's a badass set-up Rob!

I see you have the required Canon R5 fire extinguisher mounted nearby just in case it catches on fire.

I opt for a nice soft warm blankie on my back seat to keep my rig comfy and warm. I use a shoulder strap slung up over the head rest to act like a seatbelt.

That light bar puts out some serious light! Is that a Jeep specific item or do they make these for all kinds of vehicles?

Thank you sir. It is a Brawlee Light bar for a jeep, not sure if they have them for other vehicles. Too funny about the fire extinguisher

Outstanding set!

Are you liking the R5/100-500 much better than the Sony 200-600 with A9?
