So birds aren't my thing but I figured I'd give the 800 a try and took it to the shore today. It turns out that seeing a duck and getting into your viewfinder (and keeping it there) at 800mm isn't that easy
A few more baldie shots from Whittier AK.
They have a saying "It's always wetter in Whittier", and is very true. It rained almost the entire time we were there and the sun never shined. Very gloomy overcast skies all the time.
When we left and as soon as we went back through the 2.5 mile single lane tunnel and got to the other side of the mountain, there was blue sky and lots of sun shine. Strange but nice little place Whittier is.

Now That is cool. Love the third shot showing the veins. Crazy nice details.
Was he sitting on your lap?
Suddenly the term "faster than a blink of an eye" doesn't seem so fast anymore.
Appreciate the complement, I was shooting some passerines in a nearby tree when a pair walked in the snow about 25-30 ft away. Pretty amazing detail with the R5 at 700mm and I don't recall seeing a nictitating membrane so opaque and venous and I don't know if you can get that close to any of the amazing eagles whose photos you post.

That 3rd/middle shot is simply awesome that we don't normally get to see. Thanks to you and the R5!
Likewise, thank you for the kind words; it means a lot and yes the R5 is pretty amazing. Never would have captured this on the 5dmkiv.
A great way to start 2021. This is a bird I never photographed before. Most likely an escaped bird but still fun to see. This was about 2 1/2 hours away.

Wow! Fantastic shot and what a find Rob! I'll likely never get to click on one of those gorgeous birds.
And how cool is it that Don had posted a shot of its close cousin just above yours.
First time I’ve scene a Mandarin Duck in flight shot! Great catch!
