Sometimes the owl passed close enough to fill the frame. But most of the time I'm doing some healthy crops.
I owned the 100-400II.
I think the 100-500 is a better lens only in that you get the extra 100mm without really losing anything because back at 400mm you are less than 1/3 stop off of f/5.6 anyways. The extra 100mm (even with the loss of aperture to f/7.1) is just gravy. Otherwise the lens still provides the great MM/MFD for semi-macro stuff, is lighter weight and I find it to be every bit as sharp as I remember the 100-400II being.
The only thing I don't like about the 100-500 is that it has to stay at 300+ with the 1.4TC on it.
That said, if I still owned the 100-400II and the EF 1.4TCIII then I probably wouldn't be in any rush to switch to the 100-500.
