How often do you birders catch the bird blinking with their strange eye lids? I shot a few of a hawk by the baseball fields not too long ago and I'm pretty sure I got one of the hawk winking at me

If I had a dollar for every shot I've got with the birds nictitating membrane over their eye I'd be able to purchase a shiny new RF 600.
I've noticed this happens a lot more now due to the higher frame rates we have.

Okay, I don't shoot birds but happened to stumble upon an urban hawk killing a squirrel. He definitely winked at me and I think I captured it. Sounds like it's very common but I've never seen anything like that posted.

Usually I toss those types of images but I do recall someone here on FM posting an amazing close-up of a birds head that showed incredible details of the nictitating membrane. It was simply amazing to see the details of every vein. Wish I could remember who it was or where that image is.

Yeah if anyone has them post them. I'll try to find mine and dig it out, I was quickly scanning through images in photomechanic but I think mine had some decent detail. I will post if I find it.

I found my photos of the urban hawk who was caught winking at the camera. This battle between the Hawk and squirrel happened in front of my car when I parked at the baseball fields. There was quite the battle going on between the two until the hawk got his talon poked directly in the squirrel's eye which I think you can see in one of the images. That was the beginning of the end for the squirrel. There's a few shots where you can see the hawk's eye membrane. Those squirrel intestines do not look very tasty to me:
Nothing special - it's freezing cold here 14 degrees F and the spring birds who recently appeared including the GBH have fled. Instead, the same ol' same ol'...
