My understanding is the R5 also has the two choices of EVF frame rate. Standard 60FPS for better battery life and 120FPS for shooting moving subjects. This is same as Sony and it is noticeable when I shoot hummingbirds going from flower to flower. At 60FPS whenever the bird moves to a new flower I lose it in the EVF due to the delay and I actually have to take my eye off the EVF to see what flower it went to next. But at high refresh I can see it move and move with it in the EVF.

That is good news and I could live with that. I guess the other question is the rolling shutter. Looks like there isn't any at 19ms so that might be close to the limit? I think you posted R5 rolling shutter under certain light conditions. I suppose we don't know what that means yet. Hopefully not effected by daylight but is also effected by readout speed. I'm not sure how much I'll use e shutter.

Sorry for all the questions. I'm on the edge of a very big decision.

Adorama is not Canon. Adorama is awesome btw! F-stoppers wrote a article years about Nikon not having any women photographers ambassadors & Nikon shooters. All great photographers. The following year they hire several in the US market. Just state the facts.

Why do some people try to introduce skin color into everything? Stop trying to divide people. Canon cannot force people into doing their work for them or presenting, or even making videos for their gear. Neither you nor I know why people may turn down jobs or why they either do or don't create videos.

To put it in perspective the R readout is 80ms.

This is in spanish but he makes the raw file available for downlaod. My laptop struggles with it initially, but after rebooting and updating to the latest version of resolve, full res playback was smooth on a 4k timeline. I have an Alienware area 51m R2. 10 core 10th gen i9, 32GB RAM, GTX 2070 super max.

One of the comments under this video says "12fps mechanical is only capable when using the new battery at 60% or higher capacity and under room temperature."
Never heard this one ?

Is there any good reason to not leave the setting at the 120 fps rate? Why the 2 options?

Extends your battery life by using 60

Where did you find/hear this 19ms? Are you talking about the refresh rate of the EVF that Geoff is talking about or are you talking about the read speed @ 19ms?

I saw a chart somewhere on battery requirements for different frame rates on the R5. I cannot find it again. I am primarily a stills shooter so I am very interested in this. Does anyone have more info on this?

There was some chatter the other day about that but I think it's one of those things Canon puts in the foot notes as a CYA and full disclosure. I suspect every camera manufacture puts little CYA notes in stating such things.
We all already know with our current cameras to get the max possible performance it's always best to have fully charged batteries when we head out.

In reality we probably lose 1/2 a frame per second on a half charged battery. So rather than 12 we'll have to slum it and try to get by with 11 to 11.5 fps.

There was a video posted recently showing panning at 19ms and no rolling shutter. I believe that latest review by Jordan about the R6 says no rolling shutter. He actually states 19ms.

I think it is going to be more significant than that. Yes all manufacturers have a bunch of qualifications to get max FPS. But battery having to be 60% or higher is something I only remember from the 5DSR where the FPS dropped 40% (5 to 3) once you reached ~50% charge.

It is for the R6 and is the sensor scan read speed (not the EVF above) and in the DPR Youtube video from yesterday. Chris says that one advantage of dealing with "only" 20MPs is you get the faster readout and said it was 19ms which is 1/52s...so probably about the same as the 1/60s of the 1DXIII given that it is likely the same sensor. But they don't have their production R5 yet so couldn't comment on it.

Looks like Sony is in trouble. Canon not only caught up, they leapfrogged ahead of everyone, and they still have the best colors. I sold off everything except for my Z6, and am pondering switching back to Canon for the R5. Looks incredible.

I know, scary time for Sony. The World seems to be paying attention to your camera buying and selling trends.

Sony shares hit a new all time high today. We should all have such troubles.

Meanwhile, Nikon, and Canon are testing new all time lows.

But yes, the R5 looks like it will be a strong player for Canon, and they should be congratulated for this accomplishment.

Though I only own Canon gear, & no Sony gear, I have the highest praise for Sony; because if it wasn't for them there would likely be no R5, or R6, IBIS, Eye AF, etc., etc, and in their place there,d an EOS 5D Mark 5, with minimal, incremental upgrades over the Mark 4.

I'm gratified that Canon has elected to finally catch-up, and follow Sony's lead, but I doubt that Sony is ready to "throw in the towel", and will continue to be an innovator, which benefits owner's of all brands.

The only thing that Sony really innovated on was a full frame mirrorless camera. After shooting Sony for a long time, I got tired with their minimal incremental upgrades, posed as huge advances. They haven't caught up on the things that are critical to me which are ergonomics, skintones/color, overall durability and weather sealing (cracked lens mount anyone?) and horrible menus. Those are all things that Canon already knew how to do better than almost anyone aside from Nikon. It didn't take long for them to leapfrog ahead of everyone.
