Wow, Canon officially saying 2 second handheld exposures should be sharp – I totally missed that video. I'd heard this mentioned on the B&H Q&A video, but hadn't realized Canon was saying it.

About 5 minutes in he indicates that the f/stop @ 400mm on the new RF 100-500mm zoom is f/6.3 and not actually f/5.6.

Can anyone else corroborate this?

It has been confirmed that if you have the camera set to 1/3 stop increments it will read at f/6.3 at 400. If you set the camera to 1/2 stops then it reads f/5.6 at 400. Both are likely rounded so in reality it is probably something like f/6 or so at 400mm. But every lens in existence isn't actually the f-stop they claim and isn't actually the focal length they report so in the end it really doesn't matter.

The only real issue if you set it to ½ stop you can’t use Auto ISO.

I've tried 1/2 stops a few times over the years and always went back to 1/3. Just remember it doesn't matter what the EXIF reads, when you are at 400mm it will always be letting in the same amount of light and therefore your SS and ISO will end up the same to get an image with the exact brightness level. There is no free lunch by setting your camera to 1/2 stops.

That is correct. I only used ½ stops due to Lightroom. I wanted NR to be applied at import specific to each ISO. Using ⅓ stops would have created too many files to manage. I then discovered Jeffrey Friedl's Bulk Developer that allowed me to go back to ⅓. Now with LR's Adaptive ISO presets - even better.

Found this video from a Japanese photographer which shows that even with the mechanical shutter there is no black out. It does seem to be lagging a little bit but it looks good. It starts at around 9:10. He also later shows the electronic shutter which seems to show no lag/blackout until the buffer is full then it has a slight blackout until it can write again. This test is at 1:41:57.

Interesting thanks for sharing that.

So this is interesting. Because we don't even see the shutter blackout this has to be doing frame insertion at the 12FPS which matches up with the info in the Canon Japan spec sheet saying 12FPS isn't a Live View. It is basically doing what it does at 20FPS but at 20FPS it seems it looks smoother because it is 20FPS slideshow vs 12FPS.

Watching the 12min mark I can say you sure don't want to be running a slower SD card in this thing....that lamp was on for ages just writing 40 files...

But even writing to the Prograde Gold UHS-II card (which isn't a super fast UHS-II) it still took Sony like time to write.

At around 16 minutes he changed the card to about the fastest SD cards you can get (I got two of these now as well, along with my CF Express stuff). Still takes some time but a lot faster.

Yeah I just got to the Cobalt card....that is basically what I'd expect out of my A7RIV with the fastest cards you can buy. Maybe Canon is a little faster but then RIV has larger files to write. I always though Sony's data flow was half the problem but maybe it is just the files size and card size. Still it is just a gut feeling watching the time it takes without two cameras side by side shooting the same number of shots.

CFExpress is a must after watching this and no dual-RAW backup shooting if I'm shooting action.
He took 106 shots on the CFe and it took just a second or two to clear the light.
That's what I like to see

well, I can't afford no backup when shooting assignments, but then again, I don't need a sequence of 40 shots of a bride walking down the isle . Even a quarter of that will be fine, knowing that with the AF of the R5 they'll be all in focus anyway. So for these events, I expect to drop my high speed frame rate.

I also got a bunch of Kingston SD canvas react cards; they seem to be quite quick for SD, with write speeds approaching the 300mbs range (see this test: https://www.legitreviews.com/kingston-canvas-plus-sd-microsd-card-review_219458)

Shooting wildlife, I could get away with just shooting the CF express cards. I definitely do need a sequence of 40 shots or more if I'm lucky enough to witness a cheetah chase again.. Got me some Delkins for that.

Now I just need the bloody R5..

edit: did just test those Kingstons with the 5D IV, shot about 100 files /4gb, and the read speed definitely seems to be quite on par with about 300mbs.. my Lacie Big5 has a write speed of about 800mbs I believe, so CF express should definitely make downloading cards to my system even faster, although it's not pushing the limits of the CF express cards at all

I'm having a fun time watching this video at 1.5x playback with Auto-generated English subtitles trying to figure out what he is saying...the translation is bad but most of the time I get the gist of what he is testing....I'll keep going through to see what else is on it....

I skimmed through the video quickly while I was at work. I’ll take a better look at it once I get home and report back if there’s any other important information.

Things to note from the video
-Displays the lack of blackout with mechanical shutter. Shows some lag in the display maybe due to frame insertion. Electronic shutter has no lag/frame insertion.
-Demonstrates the clearing of buffer using various cards from sd-uhs I, sd-uhs II ( pro grade digital gold&colbalt), and CFexpress (prograde digital cobalt).
-Seems like sd-his II cards are not bad as long as your not machine gunning the shutter.
-CFexpress card is very fast but he says both the grip and the card are hot after taking many pictures continuously.
-He tests the IBIS with the RF 28-70 2.8. Is able to get 1sec handheld at 70mm sharp. 2 seconds wasn’t possible even at 28 mm.
-Tests the EF 70-200 f2.8 with tc 2x. Says it’s fast to focus. Buts he’s only focusing on static things in his room.
-Show the focus bracketing ability. Takes about a hundred shots all in different focus.
-Tests the low light focus by turning off the lights with only his computer screen on and is able to focus with no problems with the RF 50 1.2 at 1/60 with iso 16000.
-One thing to note when adapting EF lenses is the fps drops for some lenses. He used an EF 24-105 and the max fps dropped.
-Battery life was not bad. He took over 2k photos although he was machine gunning the majority of them, about 30 secs of 8k video, and used it for over an hour 20 mins while still having over 50% battery.

Overall it looks very promising and I look forward to getting mine.

He isn't panning but as he moves his head around it looks pretty good.

Just had a thought. That was the LCD while burst shooting in mechanical shutter. Would it look the same in the VF?

The R5 is a terrible lackluster outdated tech camera that will catch your house on fire.
ANYONE that pre-ordered the R5 from B&H the first morning before 8:30am should immediately cancel their order.
