Stacked sensor for flawless e-shutter and blackout free EVF. Plus quad-pixel AF

The 1DX series is about high ISO and low resolution with rugged build quality. The R5 will have medium-high resolution at low-medium ISO with decent build quality.

I'm not so sure I want electronic shutter, I see difference in bokeh with e-shutter and exposure shifts at higher shutter speeds...

I'm not sure about the bokeh thing but I know there are situations where it has been shown to be affected. My understanding is they aren't typically situations that we as outdoor bird/wildife photographers encounter. I can't say I've seen bokeh issues from the A9.

Yesterday I did a test to see if the e-shutter of the A9 was distorting hummingbird wings more than the mechanical shutter because sometimes it is hard to tell if the odd wing blur is just due to shutter speed or e-shutter. I shot two sequences of the hummers feeding on my backyard salvia. Looking at those two sequences I'm not seeing any differences in distortion of the wings nor do I see any exposure or bokeh differences. I've never seen an exposure shift on the A9. But maybe a faster read speed like the A9 eliminates or reduces these issues?

From my A9 experience over the past 3 years, I'd only spend R1 type $$$ if it had a fast readout. I'd spend R5 $$ without a fast readout but not R1 $$$$. The blackout free EVF and ability to leave the camera totally silent even for fast action are two of my four most valued reasons to shoot Sony right now (the other two being full sensor AF coverage and flip screen but those you get in most MILCs).

I'd need to revisit it on the Sony board, but the bokeh issue may be more that of electronic first curtain shutter, rather than full e-shutter because of the difference in how the electronic 'curtain' and physical shutter (second) curtain travel across the sensor. And IIRC it's more of a problem at ~1/500 or 1/1000 and higher?

As for movement distortion from the a9's full e-shutter, I only really noticed it with swinging golf clubs and then it was more the way the a9 read out the sensor in swaths. I'd bet the R5 will not have the readout speed of the a9 (unless Canon surprises us), therefore movement distortion would be more likely.

Right, the EFCS is what is causing asymmetrical bokeh issues, it can also cause uneven exposures with tilt-shift lenses at certain shutter speeds and apertures. But full electronic shutter should not cause either, it can cause probems when the scene features are moving, how that movement and the reading of the sensor interact.

Forget about living up to hype for now.

Will it live up to actual production?

When?

Well we just went and still are going through the effects of a world pandemic. Announcement in July apparently. I got two emails from Canon that is on it's way.

Sounds like someone has a little GAS issue?

I admit I'm getting a little GASsy too. I've had my 5D3 since 2013 and have tasted mirrorless. I'm ready for an upgrade.

I'm betting production will be constrained to some degree. But demand in the current world may be constrained also so it all may work out. Rumors say there will be a limited supply of cameras available for sale by end of July but not a typical supply we would normally expect from a popular new release. We shall see....

With sports, events, weddings, etc all canceled, I don't see demands for new cameras being strong for a while. I have some stuff I'd like to sell, but who's buying right now?

I wish I had your strength. I'm averaging a new body about every 1-2 years with my last one (lightly used 90D) about 7 months ago.

In a way, I'm actually relieved the R5 or R6 haven't been released yet. I have an Alaska trip coming up in Aug and didn't want the pressure or expense of a new body so close before the trip. Depending on the final specs, if either of these bodies met my needs/wants and were released right now, I'd probably already have one of them pre-ordered.
Now the pressure is off for a little while.

I'm hoping this will be my last body upgrade for many many years.
At least that's what I've been telling my better half for the last 5 months. She's not buying it though.

Then it's going to be time to slowly migrate over to RF glass. And the cycle begins again.

July 9th should give some more clues but the final verdict may not arrive till September release

Yeah, good question...

All of my bookings have either been cancelled or postponed indefinitely. I haven't done paid photography since early March. In hindsight, I'm very glad I didn't jump on the 1DXIII at first release. That's $10K CAD more in my pocket (or debt that's not hanging over me right now)...

I'm very interested in the R5 but can make due with what I already have for a while longer.

Knowing how Canon has done releases in the past, I can (try to force myself to) wait until the early adopter 'tax' peters out and the first round of discounts start. But I might have to wait a year...

I think the video folk may have crushed the resolution out of it.
