lol. I have this camera. A perched bird or a dog in the pond? This thing is magic. For real.

Show me the magic? Where is it?

I see nothing standing out other than 50 1.2 images that are better than what we've had in the past with the old 50L. All the rest is more of the same. You should know this if you have been here for 15 years. Show me why this camera is "magical" for you. Magic is a big claim in my opinion.

They played up the video because the R5 is an achievement for hybrid shooters. Sony couldn’t deliver a high megapixel hybrid with 10-bit Color—or anything close to the fantastic output of the R5.

Recently I’ve done some testing with the 4K non-HQ (no heat restriction) and I couldn’t believe the quality—as good as my Lumix S1.

The R5 takes hybrid technology to a new level!

Could not agree with this more. It is a fantastic high mp stills camera and a super capable video camera. Were it not for the A7s III it would still be the most capable video hybrid aside from the Panasonic S1H. Though, in additional fairness to the R5, I don't think that the S1H or the A7sIII are as much of a "hybrid" as the R5 is. They are much more video centric either from their physical form (S1H) or their low resolution sensor (A7sIII).

I am betting the Canon R5 will be voted 2020 Camera of the Year by every and all photo magazines and websites.

It might be a fun shiny new toy to have considering it's been a very long wait, but it doesn't look like anything special to me at that price point. Perhaps a still oriented camera without filter and no NR in RAW paired with a separate full blown video spec'd camera would have been a better choice. Canon tried to do it all and it backfired. They'll get it right next time after this debacle.

This camera is far and away better than any other Canon predecessor, definitely better than anything in its price range compared to others and their release prices.

- 12fps FF/20fps ES with nary a blackout
- 45Mpx
- IBIS
- Eye AF for about anything that has eyes
- Detail rendering is very good, even a bit better than the 5Ds
- I would say video capabilities, but this thing is a joke with 4K high end/8K, so nothing to see there right now
- Best high ISO body to date for Canon
- Best DR body to date for Canon
- Most ISO invariant camera yet for Canon

Seeing how this camera tracks a bird through the brush and branches and comes out the other side still in focus, that is magic. Nothing can do that kind of tracking, even the 1DX3 will come off target at some point.

It requires actually watching all the reviews/videos to see all of this in action and the detailed results to draw this conclusion.

Change is hard, and many battle against, me included.

This is my experience, as well. I'm blown away by the camera's tracking ability. I've shot several times now where a bird has gone behind trees or objects and the camera has consistently maintained focus once the bird emerges on the other side. It's extremely impressive.

Actually you just seem a bit bitter because your guess at what the r5 was going to be was incorrect. No one expects you to see the future. Now all of a sudden all pictures look the same. If that is the case though why worry about any upgrades over the past 5 years? Did you expect the birds to fly out of the photo and take a crap on your desk or something?

I am not even in the market for an r5, but it is a compelling stills camera. It is basically a 5dsr with similar autofocus to a 1dx3. I am not sure what more you can really ask for?

artsupreme wrote:

I don't have problems because I did not purchase 4k worth of problems for a camera that bricks. In your application it might work great for perched birds or a dog in the pond. But others might have higher expectations for a camera at that price point. Plenty of reputable photographers have used it and commented on battery life, heat, and bricking after stills and video.

I scrolled through the 20 page R5 image thread and didn't see anything different that what we've been seeing for the last 15

For those of you who believe this is more of a stills camera: it is not. The 4K non-HQ mode could be a work-horse—all that Canon has to do is lift the 30-minute recording restriction.

Has anyone tried the 4K crop (5.1k downsampled)? The image quality is superb! What a great feature to have when a little more reach is required. The A7SIII can't give you this—and at 60fps to boot!

Canon has redefined the hybrid camera!

How is the R5 differentiated as a hybrid from the A7rIV in this scenario? Both have high resolution sensors, oversampled 4K APS-C video, and excellent AF systems. The only thing lacking in the IV is 60fps support.

No 10-bit Color. Poor line-skipped 4K full frame video, no 120fps, no 8K raw. The R5 beats it in most ways (video).

My advice is to not feed the trolls. You have the right idea but are missing a few things. The R5 is:

-- high mega pixel ala the 5DS R as you say
-- improved DR
-- AF that isn't just similar to the 1DX3 it is far superior--focus points across the full frame
-- best in class animal focus and eye focus
-- IBIS giving 5-8 stops (never before offered on a Canon camera)
-- access to RF lenses which a more modern, often lighter and sharper than their already excellent EF counterparts
-- limitless full frame 4K video (something Canon has always been criticized for lacking)
-- 8K and 4KHQ video (heat limited) that aren't available in any mirrorless hybrid

I can only imagine what the R1 is going to be like. It's a great time to be a photographer (professional or hobbyist) regardless if you like the Canon ecosystem or one of their competitors.

You are correct, I'm so bitter I was wrong about a camera prediction. And yes, we hit the law of diminishing returns many years ago for stills so there's plenty of old tech that can achieve the same end result for much less money, better battery life, and less heat. So I'll wait but I'm glad you guys forked out 4G's to help Canon can keep moving forward with R&D for the next generation.

If you read my post you would see I didn't fork out anything for an R5, but appreciate the product. I am not really seeing where they can improve much upon this from a stills point of view. If your only complaint is the battery life needs work then I think they hit the mark pretty well. As far as heat goes the reviews I have watched indicate no heat issues in photo mode only that using photo mode will impact HQ video.

Don't forget you wrote this just a short time ago, but it seems you have made a major move the the goalpost all of a sudden:

"If it's a legitimate 12fps in AI servo and performs like a sports body then this body would have to be close to $5000."

They got close and after seeing some of the R5 results I'm sure the R1 (1R?) will fit that mold. They'll probably go with a bigger body and less MP for less heat and sports body battery life. 30-36MP would be a nice sweet spot for sports.

With the scan speeds and burst numbers the R5 is putting out there, I think they should just reuse the sensor in a body designed for better heat dissipation, and potentially with more ram.

The photographers and their clients want 20-24 MP in the top pro cameras. I don't like it, but don't think that will change anytime soon.

Would be nice if they could bump it up to 30MP and anything above that would be a bonus.

Another Class leading breakthrough all with incredible high ISO handling.

People asked for the moon , canon delivered (Top End AF, 20fps, IBIS, dual cards, all rounder that excels at wildlife, sports, weddings, portaits at 45MP) and with a free glass of champagne ( 8k video).

Those who like champagne are complaining that they want more, in fact the whole damn bottle.

Those who dont are like, why did you charge me for the free feature of 8k that may actually be userful to some of us for occasionally dabbing in it? (price is inline with 5 series)

Its camera of the last 8 years for me, a true successor to 5DIII and something that will last the next 8 years for most people's needs.

No Canon didn't deliver, they advertised certain video capabilities, but alas, it is nearly impossible to get those features that they advertised, and charged for.

It is a great stills camera, but that isn't how it was priced or advertised. So those that wanted those video capabilities are the ones that are most disappointed, with good cause. Don't advertise that your goods can do something, only to have the general public find out otherwise.

What? In inflation adjusted dollars the R5 is cheaper than the 5D when it was released. ($3300 in 2005 dollars is $4378 in 2020 dollars.) You could disable all the video features and the R5 is still below the average price Canon would charge for a 5-series camera.

And the R5 has way more 1-series-like features then Canon normally would put in 5-series body.

I get some people are frustrated they can't record their next IMAX movie in the sahara desert in one go without changing batteries but the R5 is not overpriced by any rational methodology.
