The R1 will be a huge introduction for Canon!
I hate to break it to ya but the Winter Olympics have about a 1/10th of the significance as the Summer Games, not exactly a backdrop to introduce the successor to a Flagship camera.
I still think a lot of the R&D has already been done and they are close to working prototypes!
BUT none of us are Canon so we'll all have to wait and see!!!
John

Yeah of course the Winter Olympics are less visible than Summer. 1/10th? Source? Regardless....

If I were Canon I'd rather release the R1 for Winter 2022 than waiting for Summer 2024...that would be idiotic. Now I guess Canon has a chance for the revised Summer 2021 and that would be great if possible. If I were them I'd do it for 2021.

That sounds more like how some amateurs may look at it.

But for professionals who may be considering $10,000 to $30,000 in lenses and extra accessories, $1000 is petty in relation to just picking the camera they really want.

I agree, my question is really not pertinent to professionals. This is a 5DIV level camera, to whom do you think Canon sells more bodies, professionals or advanced enthusiasts?

I think the majority of the cameras are sold to advanced enthusiasts -- most of which can't afford $10k to $30k in lenses, at least not at once. So like me, they may plan to get the R5 and one special RF lens, which will still be worth it if the price of the body is reasonable. Yes, Canon will make the most money of that special lens and future RF lenses as the enthusiasts build up their arsenal slowly.

I think that there are more enthusiasts that buy a lot of gear than those who buy one good camera and only a lens or two. Of course most don't spend $30K at one time, but accumulationg that much in gear (based on original price, not depreciated value) is not difficult after several years. I could buy an R5 for use with many fine EF lenses and dedicate a few of the OEM Canon adapters to them rather than buying new lenses. I don't think that there are any RF long teles, TSE, macros, etc. for example.

The amateurs whom I know, some who happen to be arborists, spend more than several of my professional shooter friends. One amateur from Washington, has about $100,000 worth of lenses and bodies, with the lion's share in the lenses. They are fairly adept, so advanced enthusiasts would be a good way to describe them.

So why is Canon only charging $3,500 for a 5DIV enthusiast body if all enthusiasts have $100k to throw at their hobby? If anybody tells Canon, I am finding a new hobby.

This is my plan, at least to start. Start with the 35 and the 24-105 + the R5, then slowly save towards the 70-200. My hope, of course, is that the body is priced in the $3500-$4000 territory, because too much more would probably prohibit me from buying into the system in the first place.

Really late to the dance here, but maybe I'll get one two songs on the dance floor. .

I concur with what Blair Maynard and Atkinsonpaak said re pricing and advanced enthusiasts. Compared to the number of professionals who would by $30k of glass, there is an army of advanced enthusiasts that have been waiting for a replacement for the 7D MII. At 45MP, the R5 may be a reasonable option; giving the equivalent of 17.6MP for a 1.6 crop and all the specs released. The R5 could be a step up in so many ways over the 7D MII. And then there is the 5D enthusiast camp; especially those with older models or wanting to make the jump to mirrorless.

A lot of these advanced enthusiasts have 7D or 5D cameras because they didn't want to drop nearly $7k on a pro body. The large majority of these advanced enthusiasts will buy quality glass, but maybe only one lens every 2 - 3 years, given that a camera might be a 4-5 year purchase but a lens can be a 15-20 year purchase (like the 1st gen of the 100-400).

The articles I have read and the retailers I have spoke to have been greatly 'concerned' (I'll say politely) that there hasn't been a replacement for the 7D MII for so long. It is that market, sports and wildlife, that buys A LOT of expensive lens; not individually but, rather, as that collective army.

Having read through this entire, very lengthy thread, I see the possibility of the R5 being a replacement for my 7D Mii. If it were to be $4000 - $4500 US (about $5700 - $6400 CDN), I would certainly sit back and wait to see what happens with an R7 and what Sony comes out with (given my cancelled trip this year, I don't have any strong driver to decide before January).

By the end of 2020 I plan on making a complete transition from EF to the R system. The system will include two R5’s, 15-30 2.8L, 28-70 2.0L, 70-200 2.8L, and 50 1.2L. I will keep my EF 135L and 200 2.0L and use them with the current adaptor. This is of course assuming I make it through this pandemic

It sounded like canon was targeting july. I doubt they would be delayed by six months or more. If the camera is as good as it seems, they will want to leverage their advantage over the competition while they have the advantage.

Yes, I think it will stay on schedule....maybe they will scale back production but some revenue must be better than no revenue.

Of course that will still depend on the pandemic situation in Japan and elsewhere that they get parts from.

I also think it will be out in 2020. Canon need to get ahead of its competition, it makes no sense to hold back and give the competition a chance to get ahead of the R5. That would be disastrous marketing.
The faithful have already waited too long for this.

Not only would Canon already have some R5 bodies produced, but it's doubtful they would need as many bodies for the initial release. Months ago, lots of people said they want one and would buy one. But after the reduced income last month and this month, I'd guess that maybe 30% will buy one right away, compared to how many previously anticipated they would. So delayed or limited production is a fair match for delayed purchases.

I have the money for one right now, but the body isn't an emergency. I may opt to spend some of the camera fund on landscape trees, and buy an R5 next autumn, winter or spring.

It's hard to say what demand would be in July. Things won't be close to what they were just a month ago. Nobody knows what sort of immunity one has, and for how long, after recovering from COVID-19. Anyone who hasn't yet been infected will still be vulnerable. There won't be any vaccine until mid to late 2021, etc.. I can't imagine there will be lots of travel until after a working vaccine is available.

Last but not least, it's looking like Japan is headed for some serious problems, having not taken adequate steps to mitigate spread of COVID-19 early on. Just yesterday the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo warned Americans of a "significant increase" in the number of coronavirus infections in Japan, and urged them to leave the country now unless they plan to stay indefinitely. Canon being able to source parts, or even being able to produce cameras in the near term, is questionable.

Personally, I planned to buy a new camera (not Canon) this summer. The camera is available and I can still afford it, but my plans to buy anything photographic are on hold indefinitely. I don't see any near term need for a new camera, and what I've got will be fine for anything that comes up between now and mid to late 2021.

I think Canon has been producing the R5/R6 for months now and has an initial supply ready when announced soon. Aside from firmware updates these bodies were finalized a long time ago. Canon probably also has a huge supply of parts to build since beginning of the year, labor shortages will be the challenge. The R5 will carry a huge premium, just like the RF lens so I'm kind of turned off by the costs of this new eco-system. Top it off with the pandemic and jobs, not good.

The R5 is a tool

Guess it just depends on who wants or needs one. If a pro has Canon glass and their 5D mk iv is wearing out, they can always save a few pennies by getting another DSLR. Still gets the job done.
