There was a rumor a while back that there would be a 24-100 f2.8 in the works.

That would be a very nice offspring between a 24-70 & 28-105.

It would be nice if it also retains a fairly short mfd to keep you around .25x - .33x mag ... that could be an killer walkabout.
Mated with the 100-500 (or 100-400) and a UWA prime 14/15mm or 18mm could make a very nice three lens versatility kit.

Very "jack of all trades, master of none" kind of thing ... and event oriented as well.

Not that it'll happen, but a 135-300/2.8-4 would be sweet to go along with a 24-100/2.8.

I doubt such a 2.8/24-100 would be a killer walkabout because of the size/weight (as a starting point, 2x the weight of the current 4/24-105?), and also because bright zoom lenses tend to have bad image quality closeup. So even if it has good magnification, it may be useless for those who want at least decent IQ.

I don't know how reputable canonrumors.co is, but FWIW this does cite a patent.

https://www.canonrumors.co/patent-canon-rf-24-100mm-f-2-8l-24-85mm-f-2-8l-lenses/

But it is not on the site's rumored list: https://www.canonrumors.co/updated-canon-rf-lens-roadmap-2019/

Did this R5 just become a 2021 camera along with the olympics?

I could use 2-3 of them by November 10.
What is the story?

Not likely. As they have stated, supply might be less than projected, but it will be released.

Yes, they will get as much out on the shelves as soon as possible to start recouping the R&D.

That was my question too... Cause if so I may just have to go with Sony. Right now I'm in a holding pattern. Thought I would need to make a decision soon but with all of my weddings being postponed or cancelled, other then serious GAS, I can now afford to wait for the release if it happens in the next 3-5 months. But wow.. the GAS is painful!

I think a lot will depend on prices -- particularly Sony's response to the release of the R5. If Sony immediately lowers the A7R4 price to at least $3k, and maybe the A7R3 to around $2k (probably hoping too much here), AND Canon prices the R5 close to $4k, then it will make a lot of sense go with an A7. If Canon keeps its R5 price around $3.5k (and retailers don't take advantage of a shortage to sell it for a higher price), AND you really need one or two of those special RF L lenses, it makes a lot of sense to get the R5.

I have yet to see ANY camera retailer (that's still in business) selling product above the MSRP.
Good luck to them if they do as they would be risking to lose their relationship with the manufacture.

If anything, there is a chance (doubt it) the intro price of the R5 & R6 will be lower than expected due to lower sales caused by the mess we're all in.
People aren't going to be buying anything hobby related if they don't have any income to pay for it or have taken a big hit during the shut-downs.
Well, perhaps I should add the word "responsible and/or wealthy" to the beginning of that last sentence.

I have never seen an authorized retailer for Canon sell anything above the established MSRP for that region. I seriously doubt Canon or any of the major camera companies would be okay with it.

Don't know if it will come out on time or be delayed, but this gives Canon time to make sure it is stunningly perfect. While I think they may delay the launch a couple months, it won't be a 2021 release, maybe go from mid-summer to mid-fall. But they have no excuse that it was rushed or they didn't this or that. You have all the time in the world right now to test it, fix it, retest, adjust and so on.

That sounds more like how some amateurs may look at it.

But for professionals who may be considering $10,000 to $30,000 in lenses and extra accessories, $1000 is petty in relation to just picking the camera they really want.

Exactly. Most users that purchase $3000 or so cameras will be looking at the entirety of a system that best matches their needs. Users of the cheaper cameras are more likley to only buy a few lenses, etc. and be more interested in cost. I hope and expect that the R5 does not suffer from being cheap like the R.

In my case, setting depreciation aside, I paid over $500 for multiple sets of Phottix Odin triggers and receivers, and maybe $2000 worth of various lights, all matched to Canon. Lenses far more ... but just the other gear alone is a big factor for choosing.

Why would you expect the R5 to be cheap? The 5Dmk4 doesn't suffer from being cheap does it?
If it's not the direct replacement then it's a direct competitor to the 5Dmk4. I don't think it would go backwards or nobody would buy it or want it. If it were an R6 I could see it being a bit more chintzy!
It's a 5 level camera!!!

Likely, both the "R", & RP will be/are one-time stop-gap camera,s and not fall into standard Canon lineup.
