Edit - what's the point of talking about cameras anyway? Here are a few pics. Elmarit-M 28 Asph or Nokton 40/1.2, resized on my phone so they may or may not look like crap...

IS is nice but with the iso performance on the fp not as necessary as on some of the other cameras, in particular, the other Sigma foveon sensor cameras.

Looks like a cool lens!

I'm still smitten with the fp's output and loving the compact form factor. However, it's still kinda slim pickin's as far as lenses for L Mount, especially in the wide end, and especially in the compact / affordable range.

As fun as it is to adapt manual lenses to the fp, The number of native lenses available in my preferred focal length / size / price range is exactly one - the fantastic 45/2.8 - so I'm *really* hoping that other brands start contributing. Samyang/Rokinon would make great compact / light / affordable lenses, Voigtlander could bring their magic and throw a few more Leica-killers in the mix - especially wides - and if Laowa made their 15/2 Zero-D in L Mount, I'd buy it tomorrow.

Sigma CEO said in an interview 2 months ago that other small L-mount lenses in same style as 45/2.8 should be in the pipeline from Sigma next so I hope they'll announce something any time now... 21mm, 28mm might be likely based on the focal lengths they've had available in their fixed lens DPx cameras since DP2 was 45mm equivalent.

Hope so!!

Yes, it's ESPECIALLY in the wide end that L mount is lacking, and where it is most necessary to have native designs. I'd love to see Voigtlander join the fray with the likes of their 21/3.5 E mount. That lens would be a perfect fit for the fp.

I guess Sigma might have something lined up for June when summer bonuses are received in Japan and with the state of emergency getting lifted in all remaining areas of Japan any day now... At least it would make some commercial sense.

A native CV 21/3.5 for L-mount would indeed be great. I have the VM and also the E-mount version of that lens. VM is great on the fp except for a bit of color shading. A native version could compensate for that and have EXIF etc. so that would be perfect but there are no signs of CV venturing into L-mount so far.

p.4 #11Sigma fp: Discussion and Image Thread
Hey all, I finally got around to renting an fp, so I thought I’d share some impressions I had during my time with it. I was interested in the fp as a compact stills camera to use with M-mount lenses (I primarily use an M240). Here's my stream-of-consciousness thoughts.

First Impressions
-Love the size, feels solid.
-The menu system reminds me of Sony.
-Turn on time was decent.
-I found no shutter lag. I had seen a couple of reports of shutter lag online so I was on the lookout for this. I did take some shots where lag (or lack thereof) is critical and I found the response time to be on point.

Lens Shading Compensation (to correct color casts with adapted lenses)
-A must for the wide angle lenses I used (21, 28, 35). I shot through a piece of white acrylic to generate the compensation.
-I still see slight magenta casts in the corners/edges under some circumstances, but it's slight vs. the heavy cyan cast of an uncompensated lens.
-Compensation does appear to be recorded in the DNG.
-Here’s an example of the correction for the 28mm Summilux. (Not sure if you can make it out at this size, but this shows the extent of smearing too).

Focus Magnification
-I liked this, with caveats. A half press removes the magnification, and it doesn’t cancel it completely if you let go after the half-press. This would be good, but you have to cancel magnification if you want to adjust exposure. It would be awesome to be able to adjust shutter speed/exp. compensation while magnification is active. This would also mean exposure information would need to remain on screen.

Preview Exposure
-In Manual mode, over/under exposure is reflected on the screen rather than normalizing the view and revealing the effects of exposure upon shutter half-press.
-In Shutter Priority mode, the view was normalized, but still no preview of the actual exposure on half-press.

LCD viewing
-When outdoors, there were many situations where the LCD was washed out due to sunlight or reflections. Focus was either difficult or impossible.

Color/Image Quality
-Color and clarity is outstanding.
-High ISO performance is impressive.
-I did encounter banding under artificial light.
-I feel like the metering tends toward underexposure more often than not.
-Overexposure on this sensor seems to render more inelegantly than other cameras. In hindsight, I wish I had done a side-by-side test for this. Anyone else have this feeling?

Random Bits
-I found adjusting shutter speed with top dial awkward for some reason ... until I realized it had a reversed operation from the M240. I was pleasantly surprised to find there’s an option to change the direction.
-Camera does not save last settings after a power off if you’ve changed anything subsequent to setting a custom mode. It reverts back to the custom mode’s original settings when powered back up.
-A couple of times, I found the focus point to be off-center. I’m guessing it’s from inadvertent touching of the back of the camera. -I did put the lock feature on the QS menu but after a couple of times I just couldn’t be bothered to engage it.
-I downloaded Sigma Photo Pro so I could play with the color settings of the images. It was a slow and painful experience.
-I had several one-off glitches. Memory card error; unable to zoom in during image review; complete lock-up requiring battery removal.
-Worth mentioning that the camera acted squirrely a couple of times due to using the macro helical on the adapter (a Kipon). The screen would go blank and doing random things like pressing the shutter or pressing the mount release button would make it go back to normal.

I was fully ready to buy the fp, but I rented it first because there was that nagging doubt of operation without an evf and I wanted to see the extent of artifacts with adapted wide angle lenses. I think the lens shading compensation is a decent solution to the lens problem. In the end though, the lack of evf is too much of a hurdle for my use. Unfortunately, Sigma’s accessory viewfinder is a non-starter for me as it would add too much volume. Since my intention for the fp would be as a take-everywhere compact camera, the viewfinder is a concession I wouldn’t be willing to make.

The last time I was excited about a camera was 7 years ago so kudos to Sigma for doing something interesting. Although I'm passing this time around, I'll be looking forward to further firmware refinements and future versions of the fp. I hope in subsequent versions we'll see hardware changes to accommodate stills shooters.

Sigma has set up an online new product presentation for 6/18 where they will announce some new DN series (dedicated to mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras) interchangeable lenses. I hope they include some new ones in this announcement in the same size and style as 45/2.8 DG DN although the new product leaks/rumors didn't mention any of those yet...

At one point they did talk about making other focal lengths in the spirit of the 45. I’m with you, I’ll take a 24-28, anywhere in there works for me. I’d take an 85/2.8 as well.

The new lenses are 16/30/56mm apsc lenses that were previously released for Sony E, m43, Canon M mounts:

https://www.l-rumors.com/sigma-will-also-announce-the-new-16-30-56mm-f1-4-dc-dn-lenses/

These were announced last year and it took a while... 56mm works on FF with vignetting eg for portraits, but distortion is much worse...

It looks like eventually small lenses will come for FP:

Last year when Sigma had a major product announcement session there were a big number of lenses + Sigma fp and some of them had not been leaked prior to announcement so I'm hoping there could be something more in this announcement too
I suppose everything that Nokishita listed here will be covered but there could be some others too:
https://twitter.com/nokishita_c/status/1271567805960163328?s=19

That Panasonic 20-60 should become available for pre-orders in Japan today. I saw some review videos yesterday. Looks nice especially for the wide end but I'm still more keen on waiting for small primes in the style of 45/2.8, even though the zoom is small and light for a zoom. I'm generally more into primes and I've sold most of the zooms I had for my Sony system.

p.4 #17Sigma fp: Discussion and Image Thread
They've been talking about releasing similar small lenses like 45/2.8 multiple times, even before Sigma fp was released and again in various interviews after that so I'm hoping they'll get to it soon. Last year when I took part in one Sigma hands-on product demo session in Tokyo before buying my own fp I also talked to their staff and they were mentioning the plans for additional smaller lenses like 45/2.8 back then too but couldn't give any further details on unannounced products...

Recently they've been promoting fp more and more at least in Japan (I suppose because the FF Foveon isn't happening anytime soon) so it would make sense to bring out more lenses that are a good fit for the fp soon as well to make it more appealing Personally I really want a 28mm and secondarily a 21mm (or 20mm) that would have similar housing as the 45/2.8.

In the wide end my adapted RF glass has more color shift toward the edges even though corner-to-corner sharpness is fine so that's where some small native primes would be most appealing.

Awesome!!

I'm hoping that the focus square goes away when using a dumb adapter / manual lenses in Stills mode, and that Color Mode "off" can mimic a Log profile (eg neutral with ZERO sharpening artifacts) in video. There's no mention of mapping the rear scroll wheel to ISO, but maybe that will come. Those were my 3 man issues with the camera. The flickering black levels were driving me crazy, too, so we'll see! Updating now.

Still love the camera - finally broke down and ordered the LVF-11 viewfinder (pricey, but necessary) and am eagerly awaiting its arrival in a few days.

Let me know your thoughts!
