Sigma has released a new major firmware update for fp L today:
https://www.sigma-global.com/en/news/2022/01/27/17370/

Based on earlier information, Sigma plan to release a new firmware update for original fp in April as well, and presumably it will bring over all or most of the same improvements. At least the function to control linear or non-linear focusing mode in-camera for supported lenses (part of this release for fp L) was stated to be coming for original fp in a new firmware in April when Sigma released a big lens firmware update recently.

[Benefits of the update]
Ver.2.00
・It adds the “False color” function where the exposure status on the screen is displayed in different colors, allowing users to easily see the exposure status of any part of the frame.
・It adds the “Focus Ring Control” function that allows users to change the movement of the focus ring to either linear or non-linear.
* 1 Only for compatible lenses.
* 2 To use this function, it is necessary to update the firmware of the compatible lens to the latest version.
・It adds the “STILL / CINE Link Settings” function that allows users to select whether or not they want to link key exposure settings between STILL and CINE modes.
* The following settings are affected: Shooting Mode, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Exposure Compensation, ISO Sensitivity
・It allows the “Screenshot” and “False color” functions to be assigned to “Custom button functions”.
・It changes the specification so that the countdown before a shot in self-timer mode (2 seconds and 10 seconds), and the exposure time for long exposures (bulb shooting and exposures of 1 second or longer) are displayed on screen.
・It adds a function available in STILL mode where information from the attached lens (focal length and shooting distance) can be displayed on screen.
・It adds a “Clip Numbering” function in CINE mode that allows users to change the clip numbering of the “File name / Number” in the “SYSTEM” menu.
・It improves the correction algorithm for Color Shading Correction.
・It improves the operation of “Pre-AF” in STILL mode and “Constant AF” in CINE mode.

My Sigma FP just arrived today. I've been longing for a full frame camera to take full advantage of my collection of vintage lenses but the regular DSLR bodies are just too big and heavy, and I just don't love Sony's design.

I've literally had it a few hours and I already love it! I know people say it's quirky and difficult but, well, let's just say I often shoot Sigma Merrills…

Zaha by Amy Hoy, on Flickr

This is with a Micro Nikkor 55mm 2.8. Not my best work, just so pleased with the IQ.

Edit: Hmm the scaled down version loses all the sharpness here but it looks good on Flickr…

The original Sigma fp is expected to get a new firmware update tomorrow 4/21 that will include (at least) “focus ring control” function support on the camera, allowing either “linear” or “non-linear” focus movement to be selected when using MF with L-mount lenses that support these configurations.

This firmware update including the date was recently mentioned here:
https://www.sigma-global.com/en/news/2022/04/07/17727/

I've been looking forward to using this fully "linear" focusing with my L-mount Sigma I-series primes (20/2, 24/3.5, 35/2, 45/2.8) and 28-70/2.8 DG DN.

The fp's price has fallen significantly, which I assumed was either a signal that Sigma will discontinue the camera or they're just trying to sell off existing stock. Nice to see they are still releasing useful firmware updates and feature additions to it!

Yes, they have had very good and long firmware support for the fp and for fp L as well. I was looking forward to the "Focus Ring Control” feature to be added to fp as it's really nice to have true linear focus with the native Sigma DG DN lenses. It has a lot of configurability for the focus throw too. Makes manual focusing much nicer with those lenses.

I don't think Sigma are planning to discontinue the original fp anytime soon as it makes sense to keep it in their lineup along with fp L as those share a lot of HW and the firmware updates are also mostly harmonized between the two. Original fp has been their best-selling camera at least in Japan market and it was really popular when it first came out for a few months. I guess it may not have done quite as well in international markets though.

I remember the Sigma CEO saying he was disappointed in the fp's sales. Here in Canada, the fp was going for CAD $2,700 but is now on sale for CAD $1,900, quite a bit cheaper than a Sony A7iii or A7c. I'm tempted, but the dealbreaker for me has always been the electronic-only shutter.

I have a few cinema cameras and have never gotten used to shooting video on DSLR or mirrorless cameras that don't have standard cinema settings (e.g., shutter angle instead of shutter speed), so the fp would be a perfect hybrid camera for me and would allow me to use lenses that won't work on my cinema cameras. I've been tempted by this camera ever since it came out but even with the price drop I'm still on the fence.

In Japan the original fp is still going for around 180K yen (body only) in the cheapest stores and I think it was around 200K yen when I bought mine as new soon after launch, so the price has come down only about 10%. I haven't seen any limited time special pricing either. In Japan it was the overall best-selling camera in some major stores for a month or two after launch which was very unusual for Sigma and got noticed press. Later on it hasn't stayed in the top rankings but it seems to be still selling better than e.g. fp L. Since the original fp is more optimized as a hybrid and fp L was more of a photographer camera, I think it wouldn't make sense for Sigma to discontinue either one as long as they don't have a new replacement model for the same categories.

I use my original fp as a walkaround camera for stills only (I don't do video at all anyway), taking turns with my Sony A7C. Overall I like using the electronic shutter almost all the time, but with the fp it does produce banding in artificial light quite easily and in such conditions I prefer to use my A7C and switch it to EFCS mode with anti-flicker enabled. For any fast moving action I'd use my A9 instead. I have the EVF-11 and Sigma's small add-on grip on my fp almost all the time and those do make it a bit bigger and heavier than the A7C. EVF-11 does provide a much bigger view than A7C's EVF but it also makes the camera bigger and clunkier. I like Sigma's image editing options including Color profiles and Tone curves and the ability to edit from DNG in-camera. For adapting manual lenses (esp. small rangefinder lenses), Sigma has the Lens Optics Compensation feature that allows adding lens profiles for each lens (up to 10 profiles in-camera). Without using those profiles, there's more color shading and vignetting with the fp when compared to A7C, but overall corner-to-corner sharpness with those lenses feels a bit better. Results can be quite good when using those profiles, but it's a bit of extra work to change the profiles depending on shooting conditions (e.g. between wide-open close-up and stopped down infinity). I feel that there need to be at least 2 profiles for each lens for best results and then swapping between the profiles becomes a bit of a chore. Therefore I've mostly started using Sigma's own I-series lenses and Sigma's 28-70/2.8 DG DN with my fp over time as Sigma has gradually released more of those native lenses. Now with the new firmware update those lenses have also become pretty nice for manual focusing. I'm still happy to keep my fp as an alternating walk-around camera but I do find myself shooting more often with the A7C.

Can any fp users share color profiles, including overall level, contrast, saturation, and sharpness settings that they enjoyed for jpegs SOOC?

Many thanks!

I love my FP-L. How many of us are left? I'm a street, landscape and macro shooter, so the shortcomings hardly ever are a problem for me. So I'm left with a beautiful high resolution sensor in a tiny body and a few I Series lenses that are no larger than an MFT setup. Such a light carry with a few lenses and a Joby flexible tripod. I'm really happy that Sigma continues to support these cameras with firmware updates.

I still have my original fp. I don't use it as often as my A7C but it is worth keeping and I'm also very happy with Sigma's long commitment to firmware updates. This update was also a surprise as there were no rumors about it until the announcement yesterday at the end of the new 50/1.4 Art lens Sigma Stage Online session.

Most of the updates this time are for video features though and I only use mine for photography. I'm looking forward to trying out the new “Warm Gold” color mode. It looks like it might be a good match for my photography (mostly walk-around street snapshots and cityscapes in nice sunny weather).
