Less megapixels, more expensive, makes no sense. I'm glad I switched to Nikon.

Enjoy Nikon then, looks like you made the right switch for you. Not sure what your post adds here. Everything goes up, the A9 II went up the D6 will be higher and it will not be much of a MP upgrade either. I realize that video is not a big deal to most wanting just stills but either Sony or Nikon DLSR's can't still do 4k at 60 fps yet and Canon has been doing for years. If you actually look at something other then MP's they really revamped this thing from the ground up. I get if you need more MP's for your shooting, then this is not the camera for you, it never was meant to be. I have yet gone into another board and bitched about that brand when I have no intention of buying it, not sure what it adds overall. Why can't we just all agree, there is some awesome gear out there. Across many brands. If you found your sweet spot than great, be happy vs complaining. I actually look forward to other brands merging into one another. Maybe the PF tech will go into Sony or Canon, maybe the AF button tech from Canon will go to Sony or Nikon. It is all good in my opinion. They all have their pros and cons across the boards.

Enjoy your Nikon RF glass, limited 4k, 20fps, and smart object tracking like eye/face/vehicle.... Wait, never mind, you have less now anyways in that regard so you should be used to that then.

I'm pretty impressed with what I'm seeing through most of the videos so far. Really shaping up to be the king of the sports cameras.

Still not exactly the right body for me, but I'm so glad to see the technology and capability here. I can't wait for some production units to get out there.

The AF, the high ISO, the speed all look great. I can't help but think that a lot of this technology will work its way into a high-pixel-density body in the future.

Lots of megapixels means nothing if you can’t nail focus.

It seems there will be less need for praying with this body.

Too bad it doesn't take any of my new RF lenses that I have come to love so dearly in the meantime. Oh well.

Yesterday have been informed by my CPS rep. that i can have a loaner body next week.
Though that would only be for one weekend only. And i have to admit that within the current 'hype' it is very tempting for me to say yes please. But TBH i think to really test this thing properly, i need more time. So i will be trying one out for a full week in March. Hopefully the weather will be a bit nicer and smaller irratic moving subjects are more active by then.

All in all this news shows that we probably won't see a delay in delivery of these bodies. I remember having to hammer the sales rep over and over on my preorder of the 1dx II when it was released. So hopefully for those that placed a preorder on this puppy will see it shipped soon.

There is a version of DPP that Canon may be able to give you that can open them. At least that is what Jason got.

I'm excited to hear whatever first impressions or thorough review you can give us Rob. I'm relying on you and Pius to give me the low down!!

I will do my best and report back. Tough time of year for subjects but even seagulls will work in a pinch

Good news Rob, i hope it will satisfy your needs. Good to hear that availability on the camera is not a problem on your side as well. Looking forward to some extremely sharp head on gulls from you now.

There's a lot of marketing talk regarding the Deep Learning built into the 1DxIII and being part of the AF improvements. I really wonder, though, if they also put wildlife scenarios into the DL algorithms. From all I've seen so far, the AF improvements just focused on sports and athletics including head detection etc. I don't doubt that they in fact tried to work on the tracking accuracy for various sports scenarios since the sports shooters are their main target audience with regard to the Olympics. That said, I'm not so sure if (and how much) DL and tracking abilities also translate into noticeable improvements in real life BIF and wildlife scenarios compared to the 1DxII, given the sports related adaptations. We will have to wait for the reports and I'm very interested in the experiences of wildlife shooters, too, once the camera is in their hands.

I had the opportunity to try the 1DX mkIII and I am super impressed. The ability to track faces/heads even in bad light is very impressive! It has taken the mkII and refined it in so many ways, I'm glad I got on the list to get them early. I never had any issues with the focusing ability of the MkII's but all I can say is .... wow! The mk III is even faster and seems even more accurate.

I know some people had issues with the early Mk II's, but I got two of them right at the release and had no problems with them whatsoever. I'm hoping to have the luck with the mk III's.

Even though the CF Express cards aren't cheap, I am glad that Canon has finally built a camera with two super fast card slots. As someone who shoots to both cards, it was silly in the MkII to have a fast CFast card (which were also pricy) that was hobbled by the speed of the neighboring CF card so ultimately everything wrote at Compact Flash speeds.
