6) Two additional areas of AF performance with moving subjects have been specifically enhanced with the EOS-1D X Mark III, and its through-the-viewfinder AI Servo AF with moving subjects. These are based on processing improvements within the new AF system of the Mark III:
• Improved AF performance when shooting through heat-induced “haze”
(the shimmering “heat waves” that can appear on hot days, especially with distant subjects using long super- telephoto lenses).
• Superior AI Servo AF consistency when focusing upon subjects moving away from the camera.
I had to laugh a little bit at these two improvements....not sure I need

7) Select Case AUTO — camera reads subject and movement, and assigns the Case it feels best captures that movement. It’s auto adjustment of details of AI Servo AF settings, with ability to adjust on-the-fly as subjects and situations change.
* Totally new capability
* Incorporates the potential variables of Case 1 ~ 4 on the EOS-1D X Mark III
...Show more

For both points I can imagine some real performance improvement if processing speed of AF data has improved significantly (likely due to dedicated Digic8) and if that data is used to look for additional clues like frequency of heat shimmering, speed/acceleration of subject (coupled with digital distance info). The big question is how useful it is in real life, and if there are potential downsides.

With heat shimmering - at least in Liveview mode on 80D - I often see some "pumping" where the DPAF seems to be continuously lagging behind the image on the LCD display, causing the captured image to be almost by definition more than a bit out of focus compared to using MF. Some evaluation of the amount and frequency of focus shift due to turbulence could help produce more accurate focus. Auto-adjustment of AI servo AF parameters based on speed/acceleration of the subject would be interesting for erratic subjects, if it makes the right decisions

But I wonder how much improvement this offers when working in OVF mode where the amount of subject/distance etc. data is still relatively limited. In Liveview mode I guess the AF speed/tracking is similar to e.g. EOS M6 II: works very well as long as the subject isn't moving too fast, less suitable for fast action. Mirrorless with Canikon is clearly not up to snuff for fast action, so this could be a temporary solution while they are working on faster full-ML systems.

Apparently canon is not offering any special pricing for CPS members with this camera.

I just placed my pre-order with my favorite Ontario camera store. Pius is correct re: CPS pricing but I was quoted $8459 + tax and the goody bag of card, card reader and extra battery.
I was a bit bummed by the 20.1 MP resolution but all the other upgrades have convinced me. I think I will see a huge difference with AF compared to my 1 DX 1.
Can't wait for February 13!

Maybe that will change, still early. Any options for not the large card to be included?

If the battery life is double, using the same battery as the mk ii, that savings may compensate for the card side of purchases. It sounds like pre-order may come with a free card, too.
Does come with a card and reader but not sure it is free

For Canadians....if one uses a CC to buy a US copy from B&H, you will typically see around 1.36x exchange rate when all is said and done. That converts to about $8840 CDN from the US price. The US orders "only" include a 64GB card and the reader. The Canadian orders include a 512GB card, reader and an extra battery.

(Also for any BC members, ordering from AB or ON will save you 7% tax but ordering from B&H will nail you with both taxes).

So from that perspective, the Canadian price being offered of $8459 with the extras is actually a decent offer. Still it is $1750 more than what we had to pay for our 1DXIIs (and we got a free card and reader with that also).

Would be nice if one could opt for two 256GB cards over the 512GB.

Just played with it at Canon's CES both. The smart controller pad on the AFON button works well. At its fastest setting you can move about 2/3 across the full AF array with a single swipe. Positioning is precise even at the fastest setting. Rep said you have to press the AF selection button to unlock it to prevent inadvertent presses although it seemed to stay activated for the full time I played with the camera.

According to the white paper there is a setting to allow it to always be active or to need to unlock it with the AF selection button.

Additionally there are no CPS discounts on RF glass as was in-place for years with EF. I suppose this evens the pricing field with other brands, but I'm certainly less inclined to renew my CPS membership as (to me) the discounts justified it far more than the other benefits.

I just renewed my membership last fall in anticipation of the 1dx III. I have been a platinum member for quite awhile. Given the horrendeous pricing in Canada, I decided that there would be no 1dx III for me. With no CPS pricing offered on the 1dx III, that's the final straw. I certainly will be re-evaluating renewing my membership next fall.

Fascinating that the LPF is mentioned in the first bullet-point of Canon's press release. 8-way splitting means the filter is tri-layer rather than the usual two-layer—or alternatively no-layer.

I guess it depends on what you get out of the CPS program. If it was just for the equipment discount, this is certainly disappointing. That said, service and support at the Platinum level has been very good. I've never had a problem getting an immediate loaner when something was in for repair. Like other forms of insurance, each of us will value peace of mind differently.

Why am I not surprised to see the CPS discount fading away? I think Canon Canada has wanted to eliminate it for a while and now is the time with the introduction of premium RF glass and the big-ticket 1DXIII...

The goodies package included with the 1DXIII is sweeter than the US's (and I was wondering why that was the case - I guess it is the "CPS discount"), but as Geoff pointed out, the camera is still over $1500 more than the 1DXII's CPS price... I guess someone at CC figured - why leave over $1000 on the table?

My Platinum membership has also been very good to me. I have evaluated many big whites and taken advantage of Canon's excellent service. CPS pricing has not been the only reason why I am a cps member and only look at cps pricing as an added benefit.

While the ver 3 is an interesting camera, I have really tapered off my photo hobby in the past few years. I have a virtually brand new 1dx II just sitting. As a result, spending more on the hobby is a bit counter productive for me at this time. I certainly will be reading with interest the evaluations of 1dx iii buyers.
