I believe that a forum poster (is he still) named Peter has done some bird photography with an ultra-wide once or twice, and posted the results on these pages. Going back a few years though.
I am really happy to hear the sports photographer's comment re: no autofocus lag time with the extender on his 400 and/or 600 lens.
For wildlife and bird photographers - Chas Glatzner is getting a copy of 1 DX3 while he is at Yellowstone and says he will give a report once he has used it ( on FB). I find him to be very fair and honest with his reviews and look forward to his comments.

I believe i'm one of the few that misses the occasional pigeon post from Peter on this forum. But knowing he's doing just fine without FM is ok with me. Oh well, times change. For me as well after all those years.

Here is on showing how well the AF is working
So Rob, does Peter's comments at the 15:24 mark get you a little excited!?
Those long strings of shots showing the AF tracking were crazy. This things AF seems to stick amazingly well.
To say I'm envious of any of you that are picking this up would be an understatement.
One thing I've noticed, and I can't find a way to change it, but it seems you're stuck at 20fps in live view/electronic shutter. No way to slow it down. Maybe it's the pre-production unit I have and it will be rectified in the production unit firmware? Also, you cannot trip the shutter by tapping the screen - you can touch focus, but there is no touch AF + shutter.

I find shooting large football players with a large DOF that is shown in that video to be inconclusive whether this thing can track well or not. I also don't think tracking football players is much of a challenge for many systems. I do think that the fact that he sounded like he was using Large Zone and not positioning a Expanded point on the players is a promising sign that the algorithms have improved.
I'm excited to try this camera being a long time 1DX series user since the beginning.

White papers don't list touch AF + Shutter as a touch function. I can't find anything about adjusting the LV frame rate other than using Cont H, L and single though I thought it said that LV frame rates were tied to OVF frame rates, meaning if you have it set at the highest, it shoots at the highest. However, if you adjust it to 9fps OVF, the LV rate becomes 9.

Well, he has been shooting with every 1D body since the beginning as well and he said all previous AF improvements over the years on each new body has been incremental steps but said THIS body is a massive improvement over the 1DX2. He used the term " Game changing".
So based on that bold statement, I would think that means your previous experiences with the 1DX2 will be shattered in comparison.
I wish I had a dog in this race but I'm just a mere mortal bystander.

I sure hope so...but I bet I can dig up a video of the 1DXII saying the same thing...
I had a second read through the white paper and it sure sounds like Canon took the AF system seriously in this body. The conflicting thing for me is what sounds the best is the LV system...big improvements over the EOS R with way more AF zones and all sorts of new backbone. That makes me wish we could have just got a 1DX MILC instead of this DSLR version. Does one spend money on this DSLR with awesome LV that is difficult to use without an EVF or flip screen? Or does one wait for another 1.5 years for the 1DX MILC??

As far as this one goes: Try the first, buy the latter.

The LV system sounds promising, but I think Canon did not have enogh confidence in it to release a pure EVF camera as a flagship model right now. For the purpose of evaulation of the technology, it is great to have a camera that makes it possible to compare the two AF systems with few other different variables.
Down the line I guess Canon plans to release a MILC with the same sensor as the 1DXIII already this year, but they might cripple the camera functions to differentiate it clearly from the 1DXIII.

My ears did perk up If it makes this 400mm even better, he also mentions the extenders loose no speed. I already am happy with the speed using the 2x, if it improves that also then wowza. It is making me think how the 2x on the new 600mm will be as far as speed. I noticed a slow down when I used it briefly on the 600mm Mk III.
I can't recall if this was brought up previously on FM on this thread or one of the other ones....but Rishi at DPR tested the sensor readout speed and measured at 1/60....this is the fastest we've seen excepting the A9 at 1/160. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4458909
This is good for eliminating rolling shutter in video and good to allow using e-shutter in LV for some moving subjects.

I suspect that the MILC version is going to be right behind this one and that they are using this platform to let the dedicated DSLR users get a taste of what the MILC can be like in the near future. To gently break them into it if you will, but with a BIG teaser.
Not sure if you caught Peter's comments towards the very end but if I didn't know any better, I'd say he might have let the cat out of the bag when he briefly mentioned a near future MILC body.
I also caught his words "I hope" when he was talking about a MILC version coming soon. This surprised me because he's obviously a big time pro sport shooter, yet seems to be more than ready to make the jump. This line of thinking, coming from someone like him, contradicts what everyone around here and other forums seem to think when discussing how MILC is viewed by the pro's sports shooters out there.
I just hope some of this AF tracking tech trickles down to the bottom of the pond soon on lower end bodies for us bottom feeders.
"Does one spend money on this DSLR with awesome LV that is difficult to use without an EVF or flip screen? Or does one wait for another 1.5 years for the 1DX MILC??"
Pfft... You know damn well you're going to own both so it doesn't matter.

Nope, I tried that, doesn't work. However, the Canon 1DXmkIII training pdf states "up to approx. 20fps" with the electronic shutter in live view mode, so I assume it will be adjustable. I guess I'll just have to wait until I get a production unit with final production firmware in my hands.
Interesting at 25 seconds and 3:19 it shows the 200-400mm with the 1.4x engaged and the 2x also. Making use of that f11 AF That makes my 200-400 very interesting if that AF works nicely with f11. So looking forward to trying this out.
