I have the feeling that if one can afford the Steel Rim without doing mental gymnastics to justify the price, they can also afford a 35cron of any variety and therefor the LLL 35 is pointless IMO.
i did not have both lenses at the same time, but i've had both recently...
i sold my steel rim and bought an fle v1 because, to me, it was too $$ FOR ME as a "character lens", esp wide open. the strange stuff it does wide open is cool, but not something i want that often.
at it's best though, much more interesting output than the FLE... but that's to be expected.
i like the FLE for what it does.
i then bought the LLL 8e to "replace" the steel rim as a "character" lens
i've had it for 2 or 3 weeks so far and am pretty happy. it's not nearly as wacky wide open as the steel rim, but has a nice vintage look that i think i prefer in most circumstances.
i just do this for fun, so nobody gets hurt no matter what.
but for right now that's where i am.
my other alternative to the LLL i was considering was the nokton 35 1.4 but decided to give the 8e a try
100000%, if i could even pretend to afford the steel rim but was looking for a 35mm character lens, i would buy a Canon LTM 35mm f1.5.... THERE's your character lens.
I've been shooting the Elcan 50 (LLL) for a few months... street, street portraits, etc. Shot a red carpet event last night with it. All I can really say is it's a phenomenal lens imo. I really love the way it renders. I shoot wide open almost all of the time in both full and low light, especially for these types of events. It handles high ISO well and is a great little lens. Although 50mm is a bit narrow for me I just deal with it because this lens is that good. I'm in love.
Any updates on the 35/1.4 AA? Is it going into production? Or not at this time?
It will be in production later this year, however we had another priority in terms of 35mm focal length development hence the reason I did not promote the lens until it is set and stone... The said "new" lens announcement will be posted soon however! Excited to hear what you guys think!

👀👀👀👀ohhhhh! Exciting!
A Canon 35/1.5 homage might be cool...or an SPII 35/2...or something rarer...or a novel design...
Yeah, like @_jim_@ said, a 35mm Panchro would be great, is the new lens to be announced an other lens than the 28 2.8 that was teased? Blink twice if it isn’t.
I’m quite pumped for the S21 but that one is probably still a bit far.
