Roberta thanks for the tips and fantastic results. Any more clues please share. Will you be adding the Riv to your quiver? I've pre-ordered but a surprise announcement by S could cancel .

Hi Robert ! No plans to add the Riv. I really am waiting for the long rumored A7000
Also, I saw this on Mark Galer's channel.

The A7RIV may be more advantageous for using this lens on still subjects instead of using a TC.

I won't be getting one though, that I know of.

If the A9II gets little to no pixel bump and the APS-C announcement in 2 weeks still has A6500 ergo then I will consider A7R4 for perched and floating birds with the 200-600, probably at 840mm....that should be good reach.

With the A9, having 800mm is ideal (even more is needed sometimes). Right now I own three 800mm options:
200-600/1.4x @ f/9
100-400/2x @ f/11
400DOII/2x @ f/8

I can certainly say I like the 200-600 at 840 for AF consistency and IQ versus the 100-400 at 800. The 400DOII is as good or maybe better IQ than the 2-6 but adapted AF always suffers.
The 400DOII may have to go up for sale soon....not sure if there is anyone left shooting Canon to buy it though

Thanks Roberta for that excerpt. I like Galer and like 99% of what he says (excepting aperture priority for seemingly everything!), and I'd bet none of that will change when the Riv is put into crop mode. Yet at this point in time it is my only option for a crop body with a9/a7rxx specs). I'll continue with my pre-order unless the mini-a9 gets announced.

Haha! Possibly true....several 400DOiis on the sell thread...I've already looked I'll let you go first, I think you'll turn those funds into a 600/4!
I'll turn the funds from the DOii into Costa Rica or something similar. Speaking of Costa Rica I'd like to see the FE300GM out next. Wonder if I can lift it?

The Canon board has been relatively quiet, maybe the Canon folks are busy using their gears instead talking about their gears like we Sony folks

Just kidding.

My sale will most likely be Canada Only so no need to hold back on my account I sold my Nikon 500/4 FL, that combined with 400DOII sale could get me close to a 600GM....still considering 400GM instead to minimize the size (600s are beasts to lug around no matter how lightweight and I've used the Canon III for a day and you get tired)...I've seen decent results with stacked TCs on the 400GM for 1120mm f/8.

But a CR trip sounds like a better idea than more lenses....however, everything I own right now would be pretty slow for CR.

Hmm the 200-600/1.4x is a zoom, should be a bit longer, just 1/3rd stop slower and a actually a bit lighter than the 400DOII/2x? Did Sony just mostly kill the need for a 200-400 1.4TC zooms (which are much bigger, more expensive and heavy) and 400/4 primes with a $2k lens? For those that mainly shoot >400mm at least?

Randomguy I was kinda waiting and waiting to see if Canon might bring out a 7Diii. My success with the DOii adapted to the a9 was OK, example-
https://www.flickr.com/photos/medicineman4040/36918239154/in/album-72157686941113394/
But I swear the DOii just seems heavier than the 200600 even though they are very very close.
And as Geoff has pointed out many times the AF on the a9 is good, but it is still adapted and will never be Sony level.....and for AF I need all the help I can get.

This is from an outing yesterday. This image is cropped; I should have zoomed in closer for a little larger magnification. Hey, this is a zoom lens but it happened so fast and my reaction nowadays is not what it used to be .

Exactly what happened to me my first outing and the length scale was covered as I normally will give a quick glance.

First outing with the 200-600 on the A7RIII today. I initially shot with the 1.4xTC @ f9 on and it was unusable for me due to the pulsing of the CDAF. I do like the lens though. Fast to focus and solid IQ. F6.3 vs f4 will need me to rethink some shots for sure. On the plus side the setup is lighter as opposed to the 400 f2.8 w/1.4xTC (560mm) which is 13lbs.

Heavily cropped both at 600mm f6.3

OSS and IBIS go a long ways....still wasn't overly impressed with most of the 1200mm shots but the light levels were poor. Today I will be able to try 1200mm in decent light.

Don't go selling your macro lens.
For MFD the 200600 (as we all know) is not competitive with the 100400.

These two from a million miles away and my first go with 200600+1.4TC on a9
