Just curious why this lens seems to be under-represented in the image threads here on FM.
I have no direct experience with it, but have read the reviews that place it behind lenses like the 50/1.8S and 20/1.8S (for example)... at least on a technical level. Still, when I see images from this lens (including in this thread), it seems to do a fantastic job.
Are not many people shooting with it?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm taking a good hard look at possibly getting it.

I have it and it is an excellent lens. I also had the much vaunted Sigma 35 f1.4 Art but sold it when I got the 35 f1.8S as the Nikon is a better lens, IMO. Yes, it's greatness is limited only because some of the other Z f1.8S lenses are just a tad better.

I ditched mine because of the slow and noisy AF. Not sure if I just had a bum copy but it wasn’t up to the rest of the Nikon lenses I’ve tested.

Thanks. I hadn't heard that about the 35 (slow and noisy AF). Well that would certainly be a deal breaker.

I tried to find some corroborating or contradictory anecdotes but simply couldn't find any...doesn't seem like many people using this lens talk about it. Also very possible at its price point it appeals to a more casual and less picky market of shooters.

Understood. After reading about your experience, I texted a friend to ask if he finds the AF on his 35 slow and noisy. He said no... but it turns out he sold it Not sure what to make of that.
May I ask, what did you end up doing for the 35mm FOV? Did you find an alternative solution?

I've been shooting the CV 40/1.2 which I'm also selling...still haven't found THE solution yet. Hoping Nikon releases an eventual 35/1.4, I'd be all over that, but I'm assuming they'll shoot for 1.2 and the price and size will put me off.
What I ended up doing in the meantime is I bought a Fuji X100v that does all my 35mm shooting (alongside my Yashica film P&S which is also 35mm). I'm happier with the Fuji than any of the output of shooting 35mm on Z so far.

This has been my experience as well. It's the best 35 I've owned, and probably the last one. I'll be interested in the 35mm f/1.2, but I'm guessing it'll be too big, heavy and expensive for me.

Interesting re: the Fuji. A popular camera of course.
I've been using the Z 40/2 but have to shoot it at f/4 to get the output I want. I would like something that can be shot indoors in low light at f/1.8 (or f/1.4) with similar results. The 50/1.8 (or 50/1.2), which exceeds all the aforementioned lenses in performance, is an obvious choice, but it's not wide enough for what I'm looking for indoors.
Anyway, first world problems as the saying goes...

There is a small amount of noise from the focus motor, but I have never found the focus to be slow. Focusing on a subject about 400mm away from the camera then to some trees 40mts across the road, the focus is there in a split second and as such the sound is minimal due to the quickness of the focus. Interestingly, using the lens for video, the motor is as quiet as a church mouse.

Same here. I use the 35 f/1.8 S on a gimbal. It’s very lightweight and quiet. I also have not noticed the AF to be slow. I prefer the background rendering on my 50 and 85 S lenses, but the 35 has been a solid performer.
