There is a small amount of noise from the focus motor, but I have never found the focus to be slow. Focusing on a subject about 400mm away from the camera then to some trees 40mts across the road, the focus is there in a split second and as such the sound is minimal due to the quickness of the focus. Interestingly, using the lens for video, the motor is as quiet as a church mouse.

Same here. I use the 35 f/1.8 S on a gimbal. It’s very lightweight and quiet. I also have not noticed the AF to be slow. I prefer the background rendering on my 50 and 85 S lenses, but the 35 has been a solid performer.
Thanks guys for your feedback. The 50 and 85 lenses (which I like) definitely wash out the background more but the 35 seems to have a more gentle transition from focus to out of focus that I really like as well.

Just curious why this lens seems to be under-represented in the image threads here on FM.
I have no direct experience with it, but have read the reviews that place it behind lenses like the 50/1.8S and 20/1.8S (for example)... at least on a technical level. Still, when I see images from this lens (including in this thread), it seems to do a fantastic job.
Are not many people shooting with it?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm taking a good hard look at possibly getting it.
35mm doesn't seem to be a particularly popular focal length in general. Even I would prefer a 28mm 1.8S but the 35 is what we have to work with right now... Since the 35S was introduced with the 50S, and it ended up being both more expensive and not as high performing as the 50, it took on a greatly undeserved bad reputation. I find the 35S to be a great lens, very sharp, well behaved, and reasonably compact if you leave the hood off. I have owned most of the Z primes since the Z system was introduced (some more than once!) but the 35S is the one I continue to hang on to if that says anything.
To give this thread a bit more life, here's an image from this weekend:

Same here - somehow I manage to get sharper lenses than some reviewers, I guess. 35mm is also a great focal length for video conferences, and f/1.8 provides some background blur.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8S somehow does get less love. It is probably because
1. It was one of the first prime in Z line, so we are a bit. skeptic
2. Price at introduction was especially high
3. It is not the best bokeh lens
4. Focusing 'can' be a bit 'unsure' sometimes.
5. Reviewers were not 'goo goo ga ga' about this lens.
With all this headwind, I do actually think it is a great lens. Sure, there are probably some other lenses out there that are stronger in ultimate image quality, such as Voigtlander 35mm/f2 Apo Lanther. A lens, I do admit, am very curious about. However, with the AF, and lightweight. 35/1.8 S is still a great lens to pick up and shoot.

This was pointed out to me to include in the above thread. CTRL F or Command F, depending on your O/S, and you can quickly find what's in there.

Ryan, I do agree we need to look at be able to look at specific lenses and bodies but as we already see within the Nikon threads they are becoming very sparse. This weekend alone I post images but where do I post in D850, 105E, FX?
Sony images has the best imaging thread as it is only one thread but I would suggest the exiff needs to be intact. Everyone contributes as it is easy and fun. The moment it splits there are often only few people that continue to post. Usually there is an initial rush but it then becomes of lesser interest and the posting of images become very sparse and divided.
What I would like to see is where you could filter the lens or body the same as the B&S thread. There should be the ability to filter within the threads and this would maintain the momentum and interest....Show more →

This is the lens I’m a bit conflicted about. It seems like a decent lens but I just don’t think I’ll use it as much as the 50. And with the 24-120 I feel like I have most of my personal photography Z lens needs looked after. I keep coming back to it for some reason though.
"Of the two, the sharper lens certainly is the Z 35mm f/1.8 S. This is especially apparent at f/2 and f/2.8, where the S-line lens is clearly ahead. However, the advantage tapers off at f/4 and beyond.
I’d say that the biggest reason to choose the Z 35mm f/1.8 S in terms of sharpness is if you plan to shoot in the f/1.8-2.8 range and need high levels of midframe and central sharpness. In those areas, the Z 35mm f/1.8 S simply trounces its competitor.
Meanwhile, if you tend to shoot at narrower apertures like f/5.6, f/8, and beyond, I would pick the Z 40mm f/2. The two lenses are extremely similar in sharpness at those apertures, meaning that there is much less reason to spend several hundred dollars more to get the 35mm f/1.8. This is welcome news for landscape photographers who want to travel light."
If we just focus on quality alone, I don't think the two are in the same league. 40 is a lot of kit lens level plastic.

How noisy is this lens in C-AF? I've gotten one from the Nikon Refurb sale and been playing with it, seems a lot more noisy than any other of my Z lenses and wondering if I should send it back or if that's just how the 35mm is.

I tried the 24-120, 20, 35 and 85/1.8
The 35 is the loudest of the bunch, but not by much.
At least I'm not worried by it.
