If you guys think those are heavy crops (especially off a 42MP sensor) then I hesitate to scare you with the size of the crops of the swallow images off of a 24MP sensor
I frequently consider how large I could print a crop to determine my grading as to how heavy the crop is at least for my A7r and A7rIII cameras.

Please report back on your results of the a6400 and the sigma 150_600 C. I am renting a sigma 60_600 Sports from Lensrental in 10 days to try it out on my a6400 for airshows. Will try it on BIF too. I personally prefer the Sports version mainly for the push and pull zooming feature. I know I am in the minority with this regard.
Not much going on today, a car issue didn't help.
I got to the refuge to get some shots at the bird feeders.
I got zero pics of birds flying, but a few pretty good shots of the birds on the feeder, or in the trees near by.
I have the camera set up to adjust in half stops.
I started as I normally do at 1/1000 shutter speed. Many out of focus shots at mainly stationary subjects.
I moved up to 1/1500, night and day difference for some reason.
I'll add that I was having the same issue with the 100-400 with tc's attached, so I'll have to revisit that set up some time this week.
Also, for the most part, I've been shooting alot using the new tracking modes.
I think I'll just go back to AF-C and see if I get better results. (for flight shots)
Just for fun...here are two of the largest crops from the swallows...and no I wouldn't bother printing these or displaying them any bigger than I have online
Went out with the a6400 and the 100-400 tonight.
I'm trying a couple of things to get better focusing.
Tonight was no tc's and no tracking, just AF-C focusing.
It seemed to work well.
How does the 400DOII work (with both extenders) on the Sony A9 firmware v5?
I am currently using the 400DOII on the lowly A7rII with the mc-11, and it works surprisingly well, even with the 2.0TC, but main issue (outside of tracking inability), is that the lens often travels all the way to nearest focus, and then heads back again to point of focus. Setting the limiter on the lens helps a lot, but still it is a bit of a handicap. Second issue is that the A7rII does not always discern point of focus first time. Otherwise it works very well, with high precision. I also have the 7DII, and it also does well for what it is: an aged Canon dslr, but shoot e.g. waterfowl in difficult lighting, and there is simply NO way to recover anything in raw post processing.
Since I don't place a high priority on BIF, I am still debating whether to get a Sony A9/A7rIII, and be done with it, or wait for a Canon R body that get's near to Sony A7rIII IQ (but how realistic is that?).
As far as a 7DIII is concerned: mirrorles is sooo very easy... just set EFCS, set proper exposure throught the EVF, hold the body/lens still, and you get the shot guaranteed. With a dslr it is always the risk of mirror slap, shutter shock and AF just missing target, or even getting the exposure meter fooled, it always feels like a struggle to get consistent shots. Mirrorless makes it a breeze with the 400DOII and its fabulous IS, even at 800mm...

Oh, did Sony introduce that while I was in the Galapagos?😉😉
Ha Ha, I don't think so I am trying to pull Geofff back to the Canon world. Seriously when Sony does release the 600mm, I think it will be a stellar lens.

A rare Fork-tailed Flycatcher showed up in Chambers County Texas this weekend. I rushed out there with my A7R3 paired on a 100-400 GM with 1.4 TC to get some photos. Took a bit of waiting for it to fly closer, but managed. Will say, this is fairly heavily cropped (thank you R) and the focus missed more than it hit on this guy. These are the days I do miss my 7DII 500 F4 + TC combos... My wife used that combo and produced some wonderful images

What a great looking bird!
Perhaps it was due to lack of reach that your A7rIII did not AF as well as the 7DII?
I use the 400DOII with both converters on the Sony A7rII and the 7DII since a month or so, and although I am starting to like the 7DII better now, the AF precision and consistency with the A7rII (via sigma mc-11) is mind boggling....

I've been seeing friends talk about this bird. Glad you were able to capture it Cody. I'd look this Friday but will be south of Galveston instead of north. Congrats.

Yeah, it was very distant and shooting through small openings. It could also have been setting related. I traditionally have 0 issues with AF Performance on this lens with a 1.4. Its also due to the 500 F4 IS L being extremely amazing bare on a 7D2

Good stuff going on the coast right now with migration regardless of which side of the coast you end up on. Quintana / Freeport has been seeing decent reports, just not as many eyes to find the rarer ones. More sightings of Fork-tailed Flycatchers (1 possibly 2) are being reported at Smith Oaks, High Island. Unfortunately, my weekend is booked solid to try and catch the tail end of migration. Perhaps Sunday evening.
