Thanks,
My observation has been that A7rII focus is incredibly reliable and accurate, as well as snappy. Only the problems that I mentioned, which can be worked around manually touching up with the focus ring.

C-AF works hi speed continous works, so all the basics. I will stick with the A7rII and wait for Canon to come out with an equivalent...

Hi Chris, the A7R2 + Canon 100-400 II or 500/4 II is pretty snappy, although during BIF sessions, the lenses would sometimes focus slow (during fast moving action) or do what you mentioned, and so I would have to manually focus to near focus, and then engage the AF, which would snap to focus immediately. It was sometimes a pain, but my keeper rate was about the same as my 5D3 with the same lenses, so YMMV.

My key observation here is that when your 400DOII goes wonky, manually focus to near focus and engage the AF. My Canon lenses

Great shots, arbitrage. Swallows in flight is a whole different category of BIF.

It takes skill to keep these little guys just in the frame, let along getting in focused shots out of them

This is easier. .

Quick question, What do you folks consider a "large Crop"?
This is pretty typical for me. I rarely have enough lens length.
Most of the critters around here don't let you get to close.

I personally would consider that to be heavily or extremely heavily cropped.

Not even close to a tight crop for me with the A7R3, which is one of the main reasons I bought it.

That's the reason I bought the a6400.
But for me it's not working out so well. My in focus ratio while using tc's on the 100-400 isn't very good.

I'll be trying the a6400 with the mc-11 and the Sigma 150-600c lens.
That should put a few more pixels onto a subject and save me a stop and ⅔'s of light.

Please report back on your results of the a6400 and the sigma 150_600 C. I am renting a sigma 60_600 Sports from Lensrental in 10 days to try it out on my a6400 for airshows. Will try it on BIF too. I personally prefer the Sports version mainly for the push and pull zooming feature. I know I am in the minority with this regard.

Had time this a.m. to go through the thread. Some amazing work and lots of useful info. I've used Sony for LS starting with the 7r but now all in for N/W, too. Still experimenting with rIII vs a9 for my go to. The 9 is amazing but 42mp is hard to resist. I did not like the rII for action because of the blackout. I'm looking forward to posting some pics once I get things sorted out.

If you guys think those are heavy crops (especially off a 42MP sensor) then I hesitate to scare you with the size of the crops of the swallow images off of a 24MP sensor

I've been married for 36 years, I don't scare easily.

On a side note, I've been using Photoshop forever.
The screen shot of the crop is the first time I noticed that at the bottom, in the middle, it shows the size of the crop that you selected. (1999 x 2999)

For years and years I've just guessed at how many pixels I had left to make an image.
My life just got a little bit better.
