I'm sensing the release of this camera could be a repeat of the Contax N digital camera debacle, which was first announced in 2000 to great fanfare, finally released in 2002, receiving a mostly negative reception, and ultimately discontinued in 2003, barely a year later.
Something, something, George Santayana, history, condemned to repeat it, etc.

I was looking around for ZX1 news and came across one writer who was told the likely price would be $4200, under $5000 for sure. Article was March 2019, but inflation is non-existent. B&H list the very desirable Q2 at $5000, you would think every dollar above that would cost Zeiss sales. SSDs are under $100. The CC from Adobe is a cut down version. Better alternatives will get better fast.

Do they give you a Zeiss stylus and can you dial up a file list, access metadata? Rename and search for past files, set up folders. Their video shows an email address magically filling itself in. It will be the small things that will drive users mad - well, madder than before they bought one.

From KR (welcome to point out any errors):
36 MP (iPhone does 60 MP panoramas).
35mm f/2 lens (iPhone has 13mm f/2.4, 26mm f/1.8, 26mm f/2.2 (front) and 56mm f/2 equivalent lenses).
35mm f/2 Bokeh (iPhone lets us set the aperture, 50mm equivalent, from f/1.4 to f/16 — even after we've shot our photo!)
3 FPS (iPhone shoots continuously at 10 FPS, just hold shutter button and slide left).
ISO 51,200 (iPhone shoots under moonlight and the Milky Way hand-held).
4.3" rear touch LCD (iPhone 11 Pro Max is 6.1" OLED).
Built-in Lightroom CC (iPhone App Store has zillions of free apps like my favorite Snapseed, and $6,000 buys a lot of paid apps like PhotoPills I use to see where the sun and moon will be).
512 GB internal SSD (my iPhone also has 512GB of storage).
Potential for automatic backups (iPhone does this magically with iCloud).
4K 30 video (iPhone does 4K 60).
Ability to organize photos into collections (iPhone does this automatically).
No flash (iPhone has a color-changing self-optimizing LED for a flash).
Looks like a Sigma body (iPhone looks like an iPhone).
No card slot.
No GPS (iPhone has GPS, critical to sorting and finding photos by location in the future, and also always sets the clock perfectly).
No mention of battery life. (iPhone runs all day and night).
No mention of weather sealing. (iPhone is sealed).
...
Does it beat iPhone and the Snapseed app? I doubt it. The ZX1 has WiFi and Bluetooth — but no cellular — so maybe you can connect it to your iPhone while actually out shooting to connect.

Well it looks like your phone with Snapseed is your dream camera...have at it. I personally applaud Zeiss for stepping out of the box and moving more towards the billions of people that use a phone for their photography and have no inclination of ever stepping back into the prehistoric complex cameras we all love. I just don't see the future revolving around the cameras of today...not with the young crowds that have grown up on using their phones 24/7 for every aspect of their lives.
Sure this effort by Zeiss might bomb...but it's an effort forward...not stagnated in the past.

Honestly we don't know what the price will be. B&H Photo posted $6,000 for a day and then removed it. There is no word from Zeiss. This confusion actually made things even worse for this release imo. I wish there was more transparency from Zeiss.
So there's hope. Hopefully it won't take another two years to realize they need to be more like $4K

I don't think this camera will that be that bad. With the Contax N you couldn't preview/check your raw files after you shot them, also it was a super power hungry camera running on NiMH batteries..

As far as that fan club goes, I already have the domain ready for when the camera launches. It will be a site just like zeissimages or leicaimages but focused on the zx camera.
I heard availability may be announced in EU next week. Don't know for sure

So I guess Ken doesn't understand equivalency? The iPhone has 13mm f20, 26mm f11, and 52mm f17 equivalent 35mm lenses.
Silly comparisons aside, I think the ZX1 will have a unique value proposition if Zeiss can nail the UI and user experience. As long as you're happy with the Adobe ecosystem too that is. The lens and image quality will likely be excellent, and personally speaking the aesthetics are gorgeous, if a bit larger than I'd like (even if it's to accommodate a large screen for edits). I don't have the disposable income for a camera like this, but for those that do I think there are good reasons to like this camera.

The ZEISS ZX1 is a truly innovative camera with an uncompromising position on all facets of photography. Also innovatively true and positionally uncompromising, and photographically facetious.
'It's all in the bend of the display, that was the real breakthrough.' 'we as a team got into the flow from the very beginning'. 'from the early phase we gave the concept to the photographers and see how they are working with it.' 'now is the time to combine classical photography with the elements of ease of use..'
'Get your pre-orders ready!'
BH can't give you a price but they can do this for you: 'Lease for as low as $208/month.'

I think I'll preorder.
I was always dissatisfied with the quality of the pics I was sending to my wife's phone. You know, those pics of price tags and products at Costco, with a text note "honey, should I buy this, how many of them"? I was never getting the colors right, the lighting was poor, and there was a lot of iso noise. Very poor and many time misleading representations of the actual item.
I have pondered for a while whether I should cary my A7 and then process the pics in Lightroom mobile before sending. But the whole process seemed to be quite cumbersome so I abandoned the idea.
But now, with the advent of the ZX1, I can do all that, in one single process, in the camera! Oh wow what a gift from heaven!

Read more about the company's long tradition, which has yielded countless innovations in the field of photography and whose influence has had a major impact on the development of the German camera industry.
