p.7 #1 · Official Z Series Camera and Lens Discussion

Personally I always lock the exposure when shooting in the burst mode on my DSLRs as I want a consistent exposure of the sequence (to make it easier to apply the same presets during post and pick the right frame). I don't like when my exposure changes just because there is now a sudden light source in my frame as I follow my subject. So this is not an issue for me.

Also while we are still waiting for a proper performance test. RAWs are indeed limited by the buffer capacity. However, it seems that unlike the D850, the Z7 can do unlimited JPEG capture until the card is full. Unlike the D850 with grip which chokes up after about 70 JPEG images with the fastest card. Despite much smaller buffer on the z7. That suggests that the internals have been beefed up between Expeed 5 and Expeed 6 even at XQD 2.0 speeds. That makes me thing that the Z6/Z7 will actually benefit from future faster cards. But we'll have to wait...

PS, LR, Camera Raw CC, Bridge CC just released an update last night.
I wonder if they include support for Z7 which is supposed to be available tomorrow?

I skimmed the online manual for the Z7 today to see if I could find anything about negative reversal and using the ES-2. I did not find anything in the manual so called Nikon USA - they needed to "escalate" the question and promised to get back to me.
I have only tried negative reversal briefly on the D850 and it is a nice feature to have - if a bit kludgy in operation. I certainly have plans to use it more on long dark winter evenings. I had hoped that since it only works in live view on the D850 (for obvious reasons) that it would not only be included in the Z7 feature set but would work a little more intuitively.

No problem opening a Z7 raw (from dpreview) in the latest versions of Camera Raw and Lightroom CC

Matt granger didn’t seem too thrilled in his latest video about the Z cameras. Almost like he was holding back from saying what he really felt. I feel like he’s an honest source. Will have to wait for his real review.

I just picked mine up from a local store. Today is the official release date in Thailand.
I have been using D810/D850 along side A7r i,ii, iii and my first reaction is very positive. EVF is quite a bit better than A7r iii. using 35/1.8S in AFS mode, AF on Z7 is
actually faster than A7r iii with either 35/2.8 or 50/1.4 . A7r iii is not slow by all means but Z7 seems almost instantaneous. This done side by side indoor with artificial light only. Iso 640, ss 1/40, f1.8 just to give you idea of light level. So far so good.
Factory default has fn2 button in front for AF mode and AF area adjustment which I prefer over the old button on left side of Nikon DSLR. Press the button and use front or rear dial to change AFC-AFS-MF or various focus area. However, I have to use my right ring finger to press that button which feels a bit strange now. Hopefully I will get use to it. Joystick implementation is better than A7r iii. Much easier to move around.
No chance to test tracking yet. As soon as I left the store, it starts to rain here
I think Nikon does a good job here. I am sure A7r iii will be better at something than Z7 but Z7 does not feel like just a competitor to A7r ii and certainly can compete with A7r iii on many things for sure. However, I wish Z7 is as flexible as A7r iii as far as button customization is concerned but so far not yet.
Eye focus is not something I care much about though. Use it here and there and it is nice but I don't miss it if I don't have it. Just something that I personally have not adapted to yet. Some people may think that Z7 drops well behind A7r iii because of this feature and that's also fine but I think Z7 does so many things right and certain things are already better even though Sony has 3 goes at A7r already.
Certainly now FF mirrorless is getting a lot more fun
FTZ works great with 24-70/2.8e VR. Feels just as good as if you are using native lenses. Also Sigma Art 135/1.8, 24/1.4 and 14/1.8 work perfectly fine. Face detection works with all the Sigma lenses that I tried. I don't have any Tamron or Tokina lens to try though.

Congrats Suteetat Fun times! Finally some real world comparisons and appreciate your perspective as you have the A7rIII to compare properly. I am not after eye AF either as in the A7rII as my hit rate in medium complex lighting was 80% and marginally slower. Much quicker to define a point or area and you approach 100% success.

I spoke to my good friend in Brisbane this afternoon and my Z7 is also available to pick up. He is also a professional wedding photographer and needs video capabilities alongside. In his testing of the Z7 so far he also found the AF in both AF-S and C modes to be excellent and the video functionality to be superb. He loves the FTZ adapter as it is really is seamless. He has the D850 and D5 and was about to opt for the A7III for videos. For his work I think he will opt for the Z6 rather the Z7.

Fun times as we start to see how the Z7/Z6 truly perform!

With two paragraphs and no images, I already know more about the Z from suteetat than all the captive professional reviewers and their doublespeak. Love our FM community. Looks like Nikon has worked hard to get this first iteration to hit the ground running.

Charles, I am sure you will enjoy your Z7 very much. Are you back from your trip?
I will go to France next week so Z7 arrived just in time

Thanks Rico. I think Nikon rushed too quickly to launch the product before they were ready for lime light. I had no idea whether all those people were trying in NY tried the same FW that I played with last week at a local launch or not. All I knew was that last week, I also tried a pre production unit and AF while not in D850 league was pretty reasonable and I had high hope Today, I think at least in AF-S
mode, in good light it is much improved.

Play a bit more this evening. In low light using Sigma Art 50/1.4 on Z7 and A7r iii has 50/1.4 Sony Zeiss, @F1.4, ss1/50 iso 3200-4000, both are very impressive. Sony came a long way from A7r, A7r ii
in low light AF. However, I think Z7 matches A7r iii easily and appears a bit faster as well but I think I am splitting hair here. A7r iii did AF hunt once or twice more than Z7 in 10 shots (Z7 did not hunt at all).
For a person who shoot mostly AF-S, I could not be happier (I leave AF-C, tracking to my D850 mostly).

The rain finally stopped right before sunset time but I am too lazy to go out now so just a quick shot from my apartment with 35/1.8s.

z7 35 by Suteetat S, on Flickr

@f8, 4s, iso 64

I should mentioned one annoying thing. Snapbridge! One thing that Nikon still cannot get right

At least bluetooth connection if I set up for the camera to send small jpg automatically to my android phone appears to be quite reliable. Actually, this is also the case with D850. However, I cannot test wifi connection as I think Snapbridge just does not work well when they are 10 different wifi available. At least on D850, wifi is a bit better when there are no other network around. May be it is the same for Z7 but at my apartment, I only managed to link Z7 to my phone for remote once and after that it failed every time. On D850, I find that the best way to transfer picture reliably to my phone is by selecting pictures on the camera and send a few pictures to my phone at a time via bluetooth.
Now this option is gone from Z7 (at least I could not find it yet). One guy from my local shop told me earlier that he found Z7 wifi more reliable when he turned off bluetooth. Go figure. However he is at Fotokina now so I will have to wait for him to return to ask what he meant by that.
I have been playing with the camera for about 6 hours now and took 200 pictures with airplane mode off,
battery is down to 3 bars from 5.

PS a few shots I took at the store with face detection, eyes were tack sharp.

thx for sharing that link.

"Because of the new mount, actually you cannot make an apple-with-apple comparison of an f/1.8 lens with this system with an f/1.8 lens for a DSLR, because the f/1.8 from thew Z mount is more similar to the kind of image quality you’d get from an f/1.4 on a DSLR. So that’s really never-seen-before image quality."

here it is again, reference to the 1.8 glass being like a 1.4.

IN WHAT WAY?
can anyone guess?
- light capuring ability or
- depth of field?

I bought an ES-2 and was hoping to start doing my slides/negatives (a winter project) but sold my D850 waiting for the delivery of my Z7 later today. I saw that they did leave that out of the Z7. The real only difference I can see is that I will have to reverse the negatives to positives manually in Photoshop otherwise my 60mm macro on the Z7 should shoot the same way (I hope).

I'm just as puzzled as you are!

I really have no idea, light capture ability? depth of field? sharpness (would seem weird as 1.4 lenses are often softer from the start). I read somewhere they ment depth of field but that too sounds weird. Perhaps it's easier to achieve the same T-stop as F-stop thanks to the new mount size and flange distance and as such improve the true light gathering ability?

I'm guessing that for most of us, it will be a slow transition. More an additional body, to work with. I'm certainly not getting rid of a D850 to buy a Z7....

I might do that to get a BMW Z8 though...
